IMMIGRATION:
Arrived Sep 25, 1909 aboard the SS AMERIKA at Ellis Island, age 34. Destination was a friend Franz Krokuski of 2104 Denison Ave., Cleveland, Ohio. Is this really the same Anthony? As noted below, there already was an Anthony Kapusta living on Denison as early as 1900. The manifest lists Anthony's wife as Antonina, living in Kielkow, Poland.
RESIDENCES:
1900: Denison Ave., Cleveland, Ohio (Boarding with the Albert Barys family -- spelled as Burriss in 1900 census)
1911: 1246 Redman Ave., Cleveland, Ohio (This address noted on his death certificate by his son Rudolph, however, there is no 1246 Redman. His brother, Ludwig, owned a house at 1226 Redman -- perhaps that is where Anthony had been living. Alternatively, the addressing may have changed early on. This same address was also used on the ship manifest listing his wife and children's arrival in the U.S. in 1911.)

NOTE:
1) Some deeds for this family are filed under KAPUSTUA.
2) Found a birth record for a male child born Oct 28, 1907 while the family was living at 1408 Redman. It is unclear who that child was.
According to Henry's petition for naturalization the family lived on
Redman Ave. in 1926... then according to Henry's death certificate the
family lived on Redman in 1941...
RESIDENCES:
1906 - 36 Redman Ave., Cleveland, Ohio (old style addressing)
1907 - 1408 Redman Ave., Cleveland, Ohio (new style addressing)
1908 - 1225 Redman Ave., Cleveland, Ohio
1911 - 1225 Redman Ave., Cleveland, Ohio
1924 - 1324 Redman Ave., Cleveland, OH. Purchased 1310 Redman in 1924 (as rental property?) and later sold it in the late 1940's. They also had a farm on Pettibone Rd in Geauga County (lived here prior to 1920). Kept the farm but moved to Brookview Blvd., Parma, OH. 1324 Redman is the address on his death certificate as his place of residence in 1941.
IMMIGRATION:
Arrived in NYC from Hamburg on the S.S. Victoria, 26 May 1900. Listed his residence in Poland as Rzochow which is just a few miles from Dobrynin where Ludwik's wife came from. On the Ellis Island website, there is a Heinrich Kapuosta listed as having arrived 14 May 1900 on the Graf Waldersee who lists his residence as Kielkow and whose destination was his brother, Anton, in New York. The village of Kielkow is the next one down the road from Rzochow, so either it is actually Henry or a very close relative.
MARRIAGE:
Cuyahoga County Marriage Records: Volume 0057 Page 0354 (copy in my possession)
The marriage record states that they were married by Rev. Victor Szyrocki but does not give the name of the church. Rev. Victor Szyrocki was on Kazimer Ave. in 1910, per the census. Under the occupation column it shows "Minister" and then "Sacred Heart Church". That's on the east side in the E.71st and Harvard vicinity. Sacred Heart Church on Krakow avenue confirmed that there was a Fr. Szyrocki as Pastor as early as 1903.
CENSUS:
1910 - Unknown.
Checked ED 18 for Bainbridge in Geauga County but Henry was not found there.
Checked New York -- not found.
If he arrived in the U.S. in the late 1890's he had to be living SOMEWHERE and at least a few of his children were already born by 1910 so should show up too.
CENSUS:
1920 - ED 265, Sheet 3B, Lines
Bainbridge, Geauga County, Ohio

Listed as KAPUTA, Henry on the census sheet. Oddly, he is listed as German/Polish.

The following was obtained from
http://www.mikeburger.com/cgi/show_vital.cgi?surname=kapusta&submit=Submit&stype=m
and may be the marriage of Ludwig's father.
Marriage records of Mielec show the following entry:
Parish: Wylów
Marriage Date: 1849-05-22
Groom: Kapusta, Jakub age 37 Widowed
Bride: Król, Maria age 40 Widowed
HISTORY: Przeclaw, in 1556 mentioned as Przeczslaw, a small town in Mielec powiat, on a sandy plain, 204 meters above sea level, on the left bank of the Wisloka, by the highway from Debica to Mielec. On the other side of the river, the track of the Debica-Baranow railway (a branch of the Karl Ludwig line) passes through the grounds of the village of Tuszyma. The town is made of wood, poorly constructed, and has a brick parish church, a 2-class people's school, a post office, and a gmina loan society with 963 zl. in capital. On the grounds of the major estate stands the manor, transformed from a defensive castle, on a precipice washed by water, as well as a still and two windmills. To the south lies the suburb called Podzamcze, to the north Wenecya, and farther south on the highway to Debica is the village Podole, west of which is Wolka Podolska and the settlement Podzamcze, and west of the town is Wylow. To the north it borders on the village of Kielkow. To the east this settlement is shaded by a pine forest, called Przeclawski bor.
There are markets in Przeclaw every Thursday. The settlement has 158 houses and 1,026 inhabitants (490 men, 536 women), 718 Roman Catholic, 9 Greek Catholic, and 299 Jewish. On the grounds of the major estate (property of Count Mieczyslaw Rej) are 6 houses and 135 Roman Catholic inhabitants; it has 834 morgs of farmland, 76 of meadows and gardens, 82 of pastures, and 1,566 of woods (see Dobrynin). The minor estate has 672 morgs of farmland, 77 of meadows and gardens, 150 of pastures, and 14 of woods. The soil of the river basin is fertile clay, but farther west it is sandy.
Przeclaw Ligeza is supposed to have founded this settlement in the 13th century and settled it with German colonists. In the tax register of Sandomierz province for 1566 (quoted in Pawinski, Malopolska, 500) we read: "Przeczslaw, the small town of the noble Mikolaj Ligenza, heir to Bobrek and Przeclaw. There are 40 houses in this town, of which several are abandoned; they do not have farmland, only several gardens, on which houses and gardens they pay rent in various ways. The total of this rent comes to 12 grzywnas and 4 groszy. There are no other rents. The baths pay 1 1/2 grzywnas, the mills 2, one is held by the heir, the other is on the Wisloka, the third, near the castle, is of little worth; navigation on the Wisloka brings 11Ž2 grzywnas. The soltys has 2 lans and every 7th grosz from the rents. The castle and grounds of the nobility (praedium) are good, there are three small ponds, meadows, etc. There are 45 peasants who live outside the town, 5 on full lans pay a grzywna apiece, three on 3/4 lans pay 3 fertons each, 22 on half lans pay one-half grzywna each, 7 on quarter lans pay 1 ferton each. Others have small bits of farmland on which they pay according to their size. The total of these rents comes to 33 1/2 grzywnas. Two half-lan sections are abandoned. In addition the peasants give 70 measures (cherotos) of oats, 296 eggs, 57 capons, and 53 cheeses."
In 1581 the settlement on the outskirts of town belonged to the castellan of Ropczyce (ibid., p. 248) and at that time it had 33 peasants on 11 1/4 lans, 5 tenants with cattle, 4 without cattle, and the town itself (ibid., p. 269) paid 8 zl. in a double municipal tax. There were 19 craftsmen in it, 7 settlers (inquilini), 4 distilleries (ollae cremati), as well as 1 vendor, 1 barber, 1 pauper, and 2 lans of town farmland.
The parish church, date of erection unknown, was originally of wood and called "The Assumption of the Blessed Mother" (Dlugosz, Liber beneficiorum, II, 295). Till 1454 there were two pastors (rectores) there, from which a great many disputes arose. Thus on 25 May 1454, after the death of pastor Grzegorz, the Bishop and Cardinal Zbigniew Olegnicki, at the request of Stanislaw Ligeza, Malogoszcz castellan and patron of this church, and Adam, the one pastor, decided that thenceforth there would be one pastor there and three mansioners, who would sing devotions of the Blessed Mother daily. In this document, given in Liber Beneficiorum (II, 297) there is an interesting point regarding the collection of all bequests, gifts, and incomes from burials in a special box in the sacristy under lock and key of the squire and the pastor. The administration of the fund was to remain under the control of the squire. Dlugosz says that the tithe from the town was appraised at 5 grzywnas and every mansioner had his own house to live in. Stanislaw Ligeza was to administer this troubled fund, because from the deposit made by the late pastor Grzegorz "he had usurped and appropriated no small sum."
In the 17th century Przeclaw produced Jan Przeclawczyk (Preklaides), theologian and philosopher of the University of Krakow around 1630. After the Ligezas, the Kropka-Przeclawskis owned Przeclaw, and then the Wielopolskis. Parish registers from 1601 are preserved in the parish office. The parish belongs to Tarnow diocese, Radomysl deanery, and includes: Blonie, Podole, Korzeniow, Tuszyma, Bialybor, Wylow, Kadziolki, Laczki, Meciszow, Bobrowa, and Ruda. - Mac.

BIRTH:
Born at home (3705 West 14th St). St. Barbara's school records show her birthdate as Nov 9, 1915 and her baptism date as Nov 15, 1915 which is contrary to the October birth month Julia recognised as her correct month. The card specifies that the date was obtained as a parent's statement, which is understandable since Julia was born at home and the family had probably never applied for a birth certificate.
OCCUPATION:
Employed by The May Co. Department Store and then Higbee's Department Store as a gift wrapper and packer.
RESIDENCES:
Born and raised at 3705 West 14th St. Moved to 3701 West 14th St. (next door above the grocery store run by her father) when she married. Moved to 3618 West 47th when the city took her neighborhood for the Jennings Freeway. After suffering a stroke on Groundhog's Day (Feb 1993), she was sent to a nursing home for recovery and then moved in with her son and daughter-in-law at their home in Elyria, Ohio.
MARRIAGE:
KAPUSTA, JULIA and ROZHON, CHARLES F vol.0191 pg.0089
(Cuyahoga County Marriage License Index)
MEDICAL:
Generally very healthy despite being overweight. Suffered a stroke on Feb 2, 1993. Later developed diabetes, colon cancer and then multiple myeloma.
BURIAL:
Holy Cross Cemetery (Sec 17, Lot 1013). Cause of death was multiple myeloma. [Cremated and interred over the coffin of her husband, Charles.]
OBIT:

IMMIGRATION:
Per Julia Kapusta Rozhon, Ludwig, Anthony, and Henry arrived in the U.S. in 1906 after leaving Poland to avoid the military draft, however, on the 1920 Census, Ludwig listed 1902 as his arrival date in the U.S. He also is listed as PA under the column for Aliens/Naturalized -- which may mean he filed papers by 1920.
OCCUPATION:
Grocer/Butcher - Ran a meat market at 3701 West 14th Street, Cleveland, Ohio.
BIOGRAPHY:
In Poland, Ludwig lived across the river from Hedwig, but didn't meet her till he was in the U.S. He and his family were uneducated because there were no schools in the small town of Mielec. In the U.S., he settled in Cleveland, Ohio. He built a "Sears & Roebuck" house at 3705 West 14th Street, where he lived the remainder of his life. His butcher shop was next door on the corner of West 14th Street and Redman Ave. He raised chickens in the coop in the backyard. He also owned two lots directly across the street from his home (westerly side of W.14th) where he had a large garden plot. In this garden, he had several bee hives, and at various time had a goat and turkeys.

Wylow is about 2 miles southwest of Kielkow. Note the mother's name of Julianna Galda. Pretty close to the Julia Gatla reported on Henry's death certificate. The Polish spelled Galda with a line through the L. That could look like a T to someone who didn't know the difference or didn't read well.

The above Michael arrived in the U.S. April 09, 1909 out of the port of Trieste on the ship S.S. Alice. His
destination was his cousin, Josef Kruk, in Yonkers, New York. It lists his wife as Julia and his age as 39. The place he was from was transcribed as Kielkar, but it's easy to see that it is Kielkow. | Michael KAPUSTA

Henry's naturalization papers don't list Rudolph as one of the children living with him, however the obituary for Nora Ann states the Rudolph was her brother. His mother's obituary also mentions him. He is also not listed in either the 1920 or 1930 censuses as living with the rest of the family. Rudolph is also not mentioned in a 1945 property transfer when Henry dies and his 4 properties are distributed to Anna, Adolph, Natalie, Nora, Mildred, and Louis. Rudolph may have lived elsewhere or was deceased by that time. If he's the one shown below in the birth info derived from the SSDI records, then he was probably the only one married at the time and possibly had his own property, thus might not have inherited from his parents.
BIRTH:
SSDI records show a Rudolph Kapusta (278-09-2901) born 14 Feb 1904 and died Nov 1980 Struthers, Ohio 44471. If this is the same person, then 1904 seems like a reasonable birthdate, but it is earlier than the parent's marriage date. Luci Kluth did not have any data on Rudolph.
MARRIAGE:
Never married. | Rudolph KAPUSTA
