Amelie McGuire was born 31 July 1898 in Vevay, Indiana.
Amelie LeClair stayed in La Jolla California after the death ofTitus. She sold the house on the ocean and lived in a condominium untilvery late in life when she was in nursing homes. A vigil was held in LaJolla for her on July 10, 1998 shortly before her death, attended by allher children and many grandchildren. She died July 12 1998 in LaJolla,San Diego, California.
Her obituary from San Diego paper follows:
Amelie McGuire LeClair, 99, died Sunday, July 12, in a convalescencehospital in San Diego.
Mrs. LeClair was born July 31, 1898 in Vevay, Ind. She taught schoolin a remote Kentucky village, then put herself through the University ofIndiana and graduated with a degree in English in 1924. She continuedstudies in English literature at the University of Chicago and became abook reviewer. She and her husband Titus G. LeClair built the firstall-electric house in Chicago in 1934. The lived in Hinsdale in the 1940sand 50s.
An avid traveler, Mrs. LeClair was the first woman to tour theEgyptian Museum, one of the first to visit China after President Nixon'svisit and she made several pilgrimages to Jerusalem. She visited morethan 100 countries.
She had lived in La Jolla and San Diego area since 1960. She wasactive in the San Diego Opera guild, Social Service League of La Jolla,San Diego Symphony and Starlight Opera. She served on the board ofEpiscopal Community Service and received the Bishop's Cross from thatgroup in 1994 for humanitarian service. She also served on the board ofthe La Jolla Museum of Modern Art and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
She is survived by her daughter, Diane LeClair Sutton; her sonsRichard, Hugh and David; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren andgreat-great-grandchildren.
A family Eucharist was held in her honor July 10. An intermentmemorial service will be held at 2 PM Thursday, July 16, at St. James bythe Sea, La Jolla.
