BIOGRAPHY: Served in Pequot War of 1637
Served in the Pequot War in 1637. Freeman in 1669. Captain in 1675. Cameover with his father on the Lion. In 1637, just eighteen months after thesettlement of Hartford, there were less than 800 inhabitants. Due to thethreat of Indian attacks, on May 1st of that year, ninety men weredrafted to fight off any such attacks. This group went down theConnecticut River to the fort of the Pequot Indians at Mystic,Connecticut where they were joined by parties of Narraganset and MoheganIndians. In an hour battle, 600 Indians were killed but only two Hartfordmen were killed and only twenty wounded. Two of those who went fromHartford were Nicholas Olmstead and his cousin Richard Olmstead. Theywere both granted land for their involvement in this affair. Nicholasreceived additional land for serving as a committee member of the GeneralCourt to view and settle what is now Waterbury, Connecticut. Nicholas waschosen in 1646 to be the Highway Surveyor. He was a Townsman of NorthsideHartford for nine years between 1653 and 1683. He was Corporal of theHartford Troop of Horse in 1658, Freeman and Rate Maker in 1669, andDeputy to the General Court in 1672 and 1673. In 1673, one hundred sixtymen of Hartford were gathered for protection from an apparent threat bythe Dutch settlers. Nicholas Olmstead was appointed Lieutenant of thesetroops. King Phillip's War began in 1675 and Nicholas was set in commandof the troops to New London, and Huntington Long Island. He was madecaptain of the toops in August of 1675. After many years of service toHartford and to the Connecticut Colony, he died in 1684.

!Served in the Revolutionary War. In 1775 he was with Capt. Thorp at Roxbury for two months during the siege of Boston. In Jan 1777 he was a private in John Wyllys' Co., in Col. Thorp's regiment, for two months at New London, CT. He was Captain or conductor of teams for some four years, to late in 1781. In that year he was in charge of twelve teams from Lebanon,CT that accompanied the French army to Yorktown, and was at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis, and remained through the winter. | Oliver OLMSTED, Captain
