Early New England Pendletons says:
Not much known about Edward Jr. except he went to Oxford but did not
graduate. Also, both he and son Brian Pendleton were residents, at thesame
time, of St. Sepulchre's Parish-without-Newgate, in London. Eccles, where
Edward Jr. was baptized, is near Manchester.

Eleanor was admitted to the Stonington church, 24th Oct 1702, andmade "public confession" on the 14th of June 1706. (Church Rec.).
The date of her marriage is not of recorfd but is must have occuredbetween the 14th April 1709, when she was named as Eleanor Pendleton inher father's deed of that date, and the 6th of June 1710, when with herhusband William Walker, she signed an agreement concerning the divisionof Capt. James Pendleton's farm (W.E.E., ii, 90).
William Walker did not long survive his wife, as on the 13th ofApril, 1713, the Town Council of Westerly appointed Nicholas Cottrell,Jr., administrator of the estate of William Walker, deceased, and orderedCottrell to pay to "widow Hannah Pendleton, grandmother of WilliamWalker's only child Sarah, the some of 7 pounds, 10s, annually until saidchild was seven years old, provided the grandmother does not refuse totake the child". In this event Cottrell was directed to hire some oneelse to take the child, or else do it himself. It is quite evident fromthis that Eleanor had died before her husband.

BRIAN PENDLETON AND HIS DESCENDANTS, 1599-1910, Compiled by Everett HallPendleton, Privatley Printed MCMX, found in the DAR Library, Washington,DC. Page 69.
31. Elizabeth-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was baptized 25 Jun, 1699(First Ch. Stonington, Conn.) She married Jonathan Brown. In thesettlement of Caleb-3 Pendleton's estate, Jonathan Brown gave theexecutor, Benoni Smith, a receipt for his wife, Elizabeth Brown, who wasnamed in Caleb's will as "my daughter, Elizabeth Brown" (Westerly C & Prec., iii, 330). This Jonathan Brown was undoubtedly Elizabeth's firstcousin, Jonathan-4, born 12 July 1694, son of Eleazer (11) and Ann-3)Pendleton) Brown, as is indicated by the names of their children and bythe fact that they lived upon the land inherited by Ann-3 from herfather, James-2 Pendleton.
No list of the children of Janathan and Elizabeth -4 (Pendleton)Brown appears upon the vital records of Westerly, but the land andprobate records of the town give us four of their names as follows:
On the 14th of June 1756, Jonathan Brown and Elizabeth, his wife, conveyed to William "Brumley" [Bromley] land in Westerly (W.L.E., ix,218). The index to this record reads, "William Brumbley from his fatherBrown." William Bromley had married Elizabeth Brown, 9 November 1743. Theland records show further that Jonathan Brown and his wife, Elizabeth, made deeds of gift to their sons, Eleazer and Ebenezer, on the 23th June,1714, and the 3rd January, 1764, respectively (Ibid., v.324 and x,7).They also deeded five acres to their son, "Bryan" adjoining WilliamBromley's land, 3rd January, 1764 (Ibid., x, 5), and sold land to WilliamWilliam Vincent, 14th June 1756 (Ibid., x, 218). On the same day "Bryan"Brown and Mehitalde, his wife, deeded land to William Vincent.
On the 27th March, 1769, "Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, wife of JonathanBrown, represented that her husband had sold his farm and is about tomove into some distant land and one third the money said land sold forwas paid to Benjamin Wilbur by her Request for her support, and she nothaving security for same requests that town council that they wouldreceive the money from Wilbur for her use and support in her old age." (C& P. Rec., iv, 123).
Now on the 25th December 1769, it was voted by the Town Council topay the Town Treasurer 1 pound 9 1/4d. for "Briant" Brown's taxes out ofthe money received from Benjamin Wilbur and belonging to Mrs. ElizabethBrown (Ibid., iv, 136). Furthermore, on the 15th July, 1762, EbenezerBrown declared "that in the year 1756 he heard his brother Eleazer saythat if he never came back he gave his son Jesse Brown to his brotherBryant Brown to do by as his own son & further saith that his saidbrother died soon after." Elizabeth Brown also declared she her her sonEleazer make this statement a little before his death (C & P Rec., iv,13).
Besides these four children Jonathan and Elizabeth were undoubtedlythe parents of that Jonathan Brown, entry of whose marriage upon therecords of the Second Church of Stonington (now North Stonington) refersto him as "of Westerly". The contemporaneous Jonathan Brown, Jr., ofStonington, son of Jonathan and Hannah (Richardson) Brown, was only tenyears old at this time."
An item on page 28 of Book III, Westerly "Town Meetings," alsoindicated that another child should be included in this family, as itstates that "Jonathan Hankes and Hannah Brown, daughter to Jonathan Brownof Westerly," were married in 1752.

BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol II, Boston, The Everett Press Co., 1915, by CyrusHenry Brown, page 217.
They lived upon land inherited by Ann Pendleton from her father,James. No list of children of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Pendleton) Brownappears upon the vital records of Westerly, but the land and probaterecords of the town give us four of their names. From the foregoingrecords we may set down the issue of Jonathan and Elizabeth Brown inabout the following order.

22. Hannah-4 Pendleton (Edmund-3), was baptized 28th July 1700(First Church of Stonington, Conn.), and died in 1751, at Westerly, RI.She married James Britton, of Dighton, Mass. That he was the James-5Britton, son of William-4 and Lydia (Leonard) Britton, and grandson ofWilliam and [6] Mary -3 (Pendleton) Britton, or Bretton, seems evidentfrom the facts that on the 3rd of June 1733, he, "James Brettan ofBristol [County], Mass.," was given a deed by Caleb-3 Pendleton to allthe latter's rights in the estate of his grandfather, Brian Pendleton, and of his father, James Pendleton (Rockingham Co., NH Deeds, xx, 228),and that in the settlement of his own estate, of which his widow wasappointed administratrix, 19th October, 1736, Caleb "Pendleton" was paid24 pounds, William "Brittain" 12 pounds, and Ebenezer "Brittain" 7 pounds13 shillings. (Bristol Co., Mass., Probate Rec., x, 172). William andEbenezer Britton, as shown in our account of [6] Mary-3 (Pendleton)Britton-Cross-Morey, were sons of William-4 and Lydia (Leonard) Britton, and as far as the records show no brittons were living in Dighton orTaunton at this period except the descendants of [6] Mary-3.
The will of Hannah-4 (Pendleton) Britton, dated at Westerly, RI,25th July, 1751, probated 26th August, 1751 (C.& P. Rec. iii, 270), gave8 pounds 8s, to aunt Anna Jones, rest of estate to daughter Hannah; incase Hannah died without issue, estate to go to brother Edmund Pendleton, and sisters Mary, Dorothy and Rebecca. Oliver Steward was named asexecutor. The inventory amounted to 715 pounds, 19s, 10d.

She probably died young as she is not mentioned in her father'swill, and in the will of her grandfather, James-2 Pendleton. her sister,Elixabeth, is named as Caleb's second daughter, which could not have beenso considered if Hannah were living and the children were baptized in theorder of their birth as is presumable.

He was mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Major Brian Pendleton, in 1677, but in 1698 his half-brother, Joseph Pendleton, sold to Nicholas Morey, land on the Grand Island at Portsmouth, NH, "one acre of which was given to my brother, James Pendleton." (Rock, Co., NH,Deeds, ix, 321.) It would appear from this that James-3 died unmarried prior to 1698.

BRIAN PENDLETON AND HIS DESCENDANTS, 1599-1910, Compiled by Everett HallPendleton, Privatley Printed MCMX, found in the DAR Library, Washington,DC. Page 65.
27. James-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was born about 1689, probably atWesterly, RI, and died there 9 June 1753. James Pendleton was baptizedwith his father on the 23rd Jul 1693, in the First Church at Stonington,Conn. He seems to have made his home at Westerly all his life, where heengaged in farming. On the 24th of Dec 1727, he bought of his cousin,Sarah-4 Walker, for 10s, all her rights that she had in a certain tractof land "That was given to my Honrd. Grandfather Capt. James Pendletondeceased, by reason of his services in ye Indian War formerly, which landis in ye township of Voluntown, Conn." (W.L.E.)
On the 19th of November 1731, James-4 bought of Richard Lanphere,"Eldest son and heir to Mr. George Lanphere, late of Westerly, dec.,"part of George Lanphere's homestead farm for 100 pounds (Ibid., v, 347);18th March 1743/3, James and his father Caleb, gave deed in James' son,Thomas Pendelton, of land in Westerly (Ibid., iv, 44). On the 28 January,1744/5, James Pendleton was given a certificate of residence in theselectmen of Voluntown, Conn. (Westerly C. & P. rec., ii, 400), but we donot know whether he ever went there or not.
James-4 Pendleton married (1), at Westerly, RI, 12th Jan 1709/10,Elizabeth Lanphere (T.R.) daughter of George Lanphere, ; Pendleton signedan agreement with the other heirs of Lanphere, 25 April 1727 (C.& P.rec., 1719-1731, p. 136). He married (2), at Westerly 6th January,1717/18, Elizabeth Brown, daughter of Thomas, Jr. (T.R.) and Hannah(Collins) Brown. She was born at Stonington, Conn., 9th May 1694. On the23rd March, 1735, she owned covenant to the Stonington Church. Shesurvived her husband many years and in her old age the Town Council ofWesterly made provision for her support from 1772 to 1776, during part ofwhich time her son Samuel was paid for her maintenance.
James Pendleton's will confirms the following list of his children, which appears in the Westerly records.
James PENDLETON

22029 HISTORY OF STONINGTON Ct, by Wheeler, page 532, 533.
Was first at Watertown MA, then at Sudbury MA, and came to WesterlyRI in 1669. He was in the early Colonial wars. He was admitted to theFirst Church of Stonington, CT, Nov 7, 1680.
His will is dated Feb. 9, 1702, but does not mention his son James,by the first wife, nor daughters Sarah or Patience by the second wife. They probably died young or without children.

BRIAN PENDLETON AND HIS DESCENDANTS, 1599-1910, Compiled by Everett HallPendleton, Privatley Printed MCMX, found in the DAR Library, Washington,DC. Page 1-77.
Capt. James Pendleton, was born in England about 1627, or 1628, ansindicated by the facts that he was admitted freeman at Watertown, Mass.,10 May 1548, and that on the 26th of July 1672, he testified atPortsmouth, NH, he was forty-four years of age.
On the 21st of Oct 1650, James Pendleton and Mary, his wife, ofWatertown, Mass., sold to George Parkhurst, "Same towne" five or sixacres known as "crocked meadow" (Middlesex Co., Mass., Deeds, I, 17).Shortly afterwards he removed to Sudbury, Mass., where he served on acoroner's jury in May, 1654.
In 1671, James began to dispose of the property he had accumulatedat Portsmouth and vicinity, with his wife, Hannah, he sold land andbuildings at Portsmouth to Thomas Thatcher.
On the 25th Jany. 1688, James Pendleton bought of Nathaniel Lynde1,000 acres on the sea-coast of Westerly, including Watch Hill. He sold asmall part of this land and the rest he willed to his sons, Joseph,Edmund, and Caleb.
His death occurred in Westerly on the 29 Nov, 1709. Like his fatherhe was active in public affairs until the time of his death and like hisfather too, wherever he went he became at once one of the leadingcitizens.
The will of James-2 Pendleton, names wife, Hannah, sons: Joseph,Edmund and Caleb, daughters Ann Borwn, Eleanor Pendleton and DorothyPendleton, "children by my present wife, Hannah," and daughters Mary andHannah "had by my former wife."
No reference is made by Capt. James Pendleton to his sons, James-3and Brian-3, named in his father's will in 1677, or to any heirs of thesesons, and as no mention of any such has elsewhere appeared, it would seemindisputable that James-3 and Brian-3 died without issue. James-3 haddied previous to 1698, but we have nothing to show what became ofBrian-3.

Went to Watertown, Mass., with parents from England. They moved toSudbury, and he was given 140 acres of land by his father. Moved toPortsmouth, N.H., where he was in business with his father. There he wasa selectman, 1663 to 1668; town clerk, 1663 and 1664; one of thecommissioners (local magistrates) to determine small actions from 1667 to1671, and captain of the Portsmouth military company from 1666 until1674, his last year in Portsmouth. He owned property on the Great Islandand continued in business after his father moved to Winter Harbor (Saco),Maine, in 1665.
He moved to Stonington, Conn., being granted land, and also had some700
acres of land given him by his father. Those 700 acres are in what is now
Westerly, Rhode Island, but both Connecticut and Rhode Island onceclaimed
the Westerly area. (The land was given him in trust, with instructions itbe
passed on to his children by his second wife.)
James, a staunch Puritan, favored Connecticut over the more liberalRhode
Island, but he eventually lost that fight. He continued his businessactivities and was affluent enough to be referred to as "Esquire" and"Gentleman."
He was a selectman in both Stonington and Westerly, sold intoxicants,
imported sugar from Barbados and had dealings with tobacco planters in
Maryland. Dealing in liquor was not considered reprehensible in thosedays, and a man could engage in that business, as well as in politics, and still be a community leader and a pillar of the church.
About the time he moved to Stonington, the King Philip's War brokeout, and Capt. James took part. He also may have participated in thegreat Narragansett fight. He was awarded land in Voluntown for hisservices during the war. He also obtained captive Indians whom he soldinto slavery.
Eventually, James obtained more property in Rhode Island, buying 1,000acres at Watch Hill in Westerly. His Watch Hill home still stands. It isunclear when he moved from Stonington to Westerly.

37. Joseph-5 Pendleton (Col. Joseph-4, Joseph-3), was born atWesterly, RI, 26 Oct 1724.
As far as we know Joseph-5 Pendleton was the first of Brian's manydescendants who have been lost at sea. He sailed in his father's illfatedbrigantine which was never heard from after leaving Anquilla in August,1749. When over a year had passed without bringing any news of themissing ship, arrangements were made to administer his estate and to carefor his children.
The Colonial records of Rhode Island show the following:
"Colony of Rhode Island. To the Honable the General Assembly sittingat Providence by adjournment the first Monday in December AD 1750. Thepetition of Joseph Pendleton of Westerly in the county of Kings County, humbly sheweth, that your Petitioner's son Joseph Pendleton, being amarried man with two children, in the month of May AD 1749 sailed avoyage to the West Indies Island and the last account your Petitioner orany other of his Friends had from him was August following, sailedHomeward bound; and is in all probability lost at Sea; since which Time,to wit, in the month of October last past, his Wife was taken away byDeath, and left the two small children and some considerable personalestate in Money, Stock & Household Goods, and as he laft a power ofAttorney to his Wife when he went away, she being now dead, no person hasany power by Law to dispose of any part of said estate for the advantageof the children, and if it should be left in such condition til the TownCouncil has any Right by law to grant administration to any person, greatpart of said Estate maight be wasted, and lost to the great Disadvantageof the Children. Wherefore your petition of said Westerly to grantadministration to some person to take an inventory & make disposition ofsuch part of said Estate as may be thought proper, and the money put outfor the advantage of the children and your petitioner shall as in Dutybound pray &e Joseph Pendleton"
"December 7th 1750, To the House of Magrts. Gen. Resolved that thisPetition be granted Voted & Past P. Order I Lyndon Is the Hosue ofMagrts, Dec 8th, 1750 Read & Concurred with By Order Tho Ward, Secy. Atrue copy examined by Tho. Ward, Sec."
On the 25th March 1751, Col. Joseph Pendleton and William Champlin,"the two grandfathers to the said orphans, Joseph & William Pendleton, sons of Joseph Pendleton, Jr., who is supposed to be lost at sea sincewhich time his widow is Dead, ask that inventory be made of estate, theproberty divided, and eath grandfather take administration of half andcare of one child." (West. C & P Rec., ii, 288)
On the 1st of July 1751, inventory of the estate was presentedamounting to 1515 pounds 10s., and administration given to the towgrandfathers (Ibid., pp. 251-2). On the same day Col. Joseph Pendleton asprincipal, with Benoni Smith and Joseph Champlin, gave bond to the townof Westerly in the sum of 1518 pounds 10s., for the proper administrationby Col. Joseph of one half the personal property of Joseph Pendleton,Jr., supposed to be dead, and for the bringing up of the eldest of JosephJunr's children, viz., Joseph Pendleton. 55. (Capt.) Joshua-5 Pendleton, was born at Westerly, RI, 6 May1744, and died there while on a visit, 9 April 1824. He married atWesterly, 6 Jan 1768, Anna (Nancy) Clarke, daughter of Elisha and Mary(Potter) Clarke. She was born 7 Oct 1717, and died 17 June 1740, atNorwich, Conn.
Joshua Pendleton was a master mariner in early life, and retiredfrom the sea when he was about fifty years of age. Up to that time hemake his home at Westerly, RI, where he was more active in military thanin civil affairs. The Rhode Island records show that he was appointedEnsign of the 1st Company Militia at Westerly in August, 1774,re-appointed, June, 1775, commissioned Lieutenant, 31 Oct, 1775, and1776, Captain, May, 1777, and received subsequent appointments as Captainup to Feb. 1780, Joshua Pendleton served as Captain in Col. Noyes'Regiment, and received payment for "Provisions found" from 25 July to 1August 1778.
His name does not appear often in the Council and Probate Records atWesterly, but on the 29th of March 1784, Capt. Joshua Pendleton andWilliam Babcock, Esq., were appointed to set a value of the rent ofThompson's farm. About 1795 he removed to Norwich, Conn. where he boughta farm on the Bozrah line and lived there the rest of his life. Most ofthis farm lay in Bozrah, but his house was on the Norwich side of theboundary. The record of his death upon the Norwich records refers to himas "Deacon" a poisiton he held for many years at the First Church of thattown. His will, dated at Norwich, 30 Dec 1813, filed 5 May 1824 (NorwichProb. Rec., xiii, 372; see Appendix VIII), names wife Anna, sons Joshua,William, Elisha C., and Adam; Daughters Nancy Rogers, Patty Palmer, LucyLathrop, Clarissa Harlowe Adams, Polly Bennett, and Lydia Bennett;grnadson, Joseph Pendleton. In the naming of a daughter "ClarissaHarlowe." it would appear that the literature of his day was not unknownto Deacon Joshua.
The descendants of Capt. Joshua Pendleton are more numerous throughhis daughters than through his sons. Those bearing the name Pendletonhave been mostly farmers with a sprinkling of business and professionalmen. Most of them are now located in Connecticut, New York and Colorado, with a few in Michigan, California and otgher states. Several of themhave been membhers of state legislatures.

20. (Lieut.) Joshua-4 Pendleton, was born at Westerly, RI, 22February, 1705, and died at Guilford, Conn., 29 Feb 1760 (T.R.), or 28February, 1760 (G.S.). His mother and step-father, Samuel Rogers, removedfrom Westerly to Branford, Conn, about 1725, and it is not unlikely thatJoshua went with them, as on the 12th of February, 1727/9, he bought ofAbial Eliot for 22 pounds a tract of land in the adjoining town ofGuilford (Guilford Deeds, iv. 18). On the 25th of April, 1729, Eliotmortgaged to him an adjacent lot of one quarter acre (Ibid., p. 92), andon the 23rd of the following December he sold or mortgaged to Eliot theproperty he owned in Guilford.
Not long afterward he returned to Westerly, where on the 27th ofMarch 1732, with his wife Dorothea as a party to the deed, he sold toStephen Wilcox about 100 acres of land with house, etc., thereon, "Itbeing part of Capt. James Pendleton's farm" (W.I.E., v.345-6). On thesame day he bought of Wilcox for 650 pounds land in Stonington, Conn.(Stonington Deeds, iv, 298).
Joshua does not appear to have settled at Stonington immediately, asin October, 1733, he was admitted freeman at Westerly (T.R.), but he iscalled "of Stonington" in the deed he and his wife made to John Richmondof their Stonington property, 15 Jan 1734 (Stonington Deeds, iv, 502-3).They went back to Guilford soon after this date, where on the 8th ofApril, 1736, Joshua bought of Daniel Hubbard for 304 pounds, three andthree quarters acres of land with house and other buildings thereon(Guilford Deeds, v, 231). On the 17th of April, 1741, he bought anadditional tract of land on the "Great Ox Pasture."
After these various movings about, Joshua settled down permanentlyat Guilford, where he sepnt the rest of his life except for such time ashe was in the Colonial army during King George's War. Like nearly all themen of his day he engaged in farming and stock raising, but to noconsiderable extent, his will shows that his chief occupation wastanning, with its old time adjunet of making shoes, and that he carriedon this business to a large way in Guilford.
Outside of his being one of those chosen to build a wharf at Jones'sBridge in 1744, he does not appear to have taken much active part in thecivil affairs of the town, but he was ddeeply concered in the militaryenterprises of the Colony. In February, 1745, the Connecticut Assemblyappointed Joshua Pendleton of Guilford "To be Ensign in the Regiment ofFoot to be raised and sent from this Government on the expedition againsthis Majesties enemies at Cape Breton, etc. and orders that he becommissioned accordingly." (Conn. Col. Rec.) This regiment saw activeservice in the first campaign against Louisburg, and it is reasonable tosuppose that Joshua was one of Pepperell's hardy New Englanders whobesieged that fortress and effected its capitulation, 17 June 1745.
After such an adventgure as this it was to be expected that Joshuawould continue to take an active interest in military affairs, and weaccordingly find that in May, 1718, the Assembly appointed him Ensign ofthe 2nd Company or Train Band in the 7th Regiment of the Colony, and thatin May, 1755, he was commissioned Lieutenant in the same Company andRegiment *Conn. Col. Rec.). A reference to his soldier life is made inhis will in which he leaves to his son, Increase, "My Artillery andImplements of War." This will, dated 27 Feb 1758, proved March 1760 (SeeAppendex VIII), names wife, Dorothea, son Increase, and daughter DeborahFowler.
Lieut. Joshua Pendleton married Dorothea Ward, daughter of Capt.Andrew and Deborah (Joy) Ward of Killingworth, Conn. (Goodwin's"Genealogical Notes"). She was born 4 Jan 1708, and died at Guilford, 5Nov 1763.
