Notes: Frank M. Ruetenik, one of the market gardners in the Schaaf Road district, died Feb. 24 in the Home for the Age in Upper Sandusky. He was buried in Cincinnati. Ninety-five years ago Mr. Ruetenik was born here. He was the son of Rev. Nathaniel and Elizabeth Tanner Ruetenik, who settled in old Brooklyn more than a century ago. A few years after the death of his wife, Mrs. Sophia Hanhart Ruetenik, in 1942, he entered the home for the aged at Upper Sandusky. Until a few years ago he had unofficial charge of the farm and gardens of that institution. For much of his life Mr. Ruetenik was a member of First Evangelical and Reformed Church, of which his father was founder and for some years pastor. OBIT: Paul B. Ruetenik was a former Erie County Commissioner and served a term as president of the Vermilion School Board.
Away from those duties, he had a green thumb.
Mr. Ruetenik owned and operated the Ruetenik Gardens in Vermilion for many years before retiring in 1981. He also served as the president of the Ohio Vegetable Growers Association from 1957 to 1959 and the National Vegetable Growers Association of America.
Mr. Ruetenik, 89, died Tuesday in the Vermilion Manor Nursing Home, after a long illness.
He was born in Brooklyn Heights. He moved to Vermilion in 1934.
Mr. Ruetenik attended Ohio State University and majored in agriculture.
He was a member of the Vermilion Evangelical and Reformed Church, Ely Masonic Lodge 424 Free and Accepted Masons of Vermilion, and the Vermilion Rotary Club.
Mr. Ruetenik was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a former member of the board of Riverside Cemetery Association in Cleveland.
He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Ruth; daughters, Marilyn Welborn of Toledo and Donna Shepherd of Vermilion; a son, Roger of Montgomery, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
