Page 427, 1771. A List of Polls and of the Estates Province Laws, 1771, Chapter 3 describes this list as "containing an account of all male polls, of sixteen years old and upwards, whether at home or abroad, distinguishing such as are exempt from rates; and of all rateable estate, both real and personal, lying within or adjacent to their respoective towns and districts, and by whom occupied . . . and of all Indian, negro or molatto servants forlife, from fourteen to forth-five years of age; . . . and also of all horses,oxen, goats, sheep and swine, at the respective ages in said list. And said assessors, in taking said valuation, shall distinguish the different improvements of land, and return their list in the following manner; viz., the number ofacres of pasture, and the number of cows the same will keep, with the after-feed of the whole farm; number of barrels of cyder that can be made upon the farm,one year with another; the number of acres of tillage land, bushels of grainand corn, including all sorts the same will produce by the year; number of acres of English, and upland, and will produce by the year; excepting . . . settledministers and grammer-school masters, with their families shall be exempted out of this act.
