OBIT: Arlene G. RuetenikMarch 2, 1920 - Nov. 2, 2004Arlene Genevieve Ruetenik, 84, of Fairfield Glade, passed away Nov. 2, 2004. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Ruetenik was born March 2, 1920, in New Lyme, OH, the third of four sisters, to Ellen Elizabeth Woodruff and Willis Washington Woodruff. She graduated from an Orwell, OH high school in 1938 and married Donald Julius Ruetenik in Cleveland, OH, at the home of the minister, the Rev. H. Baumer of the Eighth Reformed Church on June 22, 1941. Her youngest sister, June, was the bridesmaid and Donald's best friend, Leo Malan, was the best man. Arlene's mother and Donald's mother were also in attendance.
Arlene was a wonderful stay-at-home mother and homemaker, raising her children to be good, law-abiding citizens, able to strike out and live on their own. She was a devoted wife who celebrated over 63 years of marriage with her husband, Donald. Her family always came first.
She was an excellent seamstress who, using an old foot-peddled treadle sewing machine early in her marriage, made and kept in repair countless items of clothing for her growing family. She managed the home during the many times when her husband was transferred to different areas connected with his work. First, in Ashtabula, OH, where Donald served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. She spent the better part of three years at that time living with her sister and Donald's parents in Orwell, OH.Upon his discharge, they lived in Cleveland, OH, for a year before moving to Columbus, OH, for another year, then on to spend a couple of years in Cincinnati, OH, before moving to Pontiac, MI.
The moves continued as the family went to Detroit, MI, on to Cuyahoga Falls, OH, then to Westerville, OH, for several more years until settling in Arlington Heights, MI, for a stretch of 17 years. Finally, they moved to Fairfield Glade, TN, to spend their retirement years. While the many moves were challenging, Arlene always accepted the challenges, took them in stride, and made the best of everything. She always made friends easily and was loved by all those fortunate enough to meet her.
When she was overtaken by a crippling stroke in October 1998, she made the best of her stay in the hospital and subsequent move to the nursing home in Crossville. Never one to demand or call attention to herself, Arlene respected the nurses and care givers who attended her, never expecting special care. All those who cared for her never failed to show how much they loved her.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Ruetenik of Fairfield Glade; children, Gary Lee Ruetenik and his wife, Doris, of Fairfield Glade, James Russell Ruetenik and his wife, Barbara, of Sun City, AZ, Donald Julius Ruetenik Jr. and his wife, Amy, of Pleasant Hill, CA, Suzanne Arlene Stipek and her husband, Larry, of Leesburg, VA, and Robin Lynn Miller and her husband, Alan, of Palatine, IL.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ellen Elizabeth Woodruff; and father, Willis Washington Woodruff, who died when Arlene was just 2 years old.Crossville Memorial Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. was in charge of the arrangements. | Arlene G. WOODRUFF
