With his parents and brothers, Noel Hawkins, Jr., when four years ofage, moved in an ox-team from Lake George to the western part of theState, to a place called Lodi, where there were but half a dozen houses.This place is now Gowanda, Cattaraugus Co., NY, with over 2,500inhabitants. His father p[urchased a tract of land four miles from thissettlement, blazing the trees to find his way back. Here he cleared afarm, erecting a log cabin, and made for himself and wife their home.
