Jeptha Homer Wade (August 11, 1811-August 9, 1890) for whom the park was named, was a Cleveland, Ohio Industrialist who used his vast wealth to benefit the Cleveland community. In 1882, Wade donated 72 acres (291,000 m²) of land east of the city for purpose of creating a park under the condition that the city would expend at least $75,000 for improving the park. The city added additional acres and opened the park in 1892.Wade Park has since been a significant influence in the creation of the public parkland along the neighboring Doan Brook region.
