1764-74 member of Mills Creek Presbyterian Church, Wayne Co., OH.

Fought in War Of Independence 1775-1783. Volunteered in 1776, served as PVT in Capt. G. McCormick Co., PVT in Capt. T. Bass (Bay's) Co., elected Capt. under Col. Marshall to defend the frontier and served under Col. Baird & D. Williamson. Served in War of 1812 as a Capt. Pension applied 31 Aug 1832.

Buried in Cemetery #16, (German) Reform Church Cemetery, Tuscarawas Twp., Stark Co., OH.

POE, MATTHEWS, KOFFEL I am a direct descendant of Adam POE b. 1745 or
1747 in Frederick Co, MD and died on either Sept. 23, 1838 or 1840 in Stark Co.,
OH. He married Betsey MATTHEWS, b. in Feb. 1756 in Down, North Ireland
(Ulster). She came to America in 1768 and died in Stark Co., Ohio. Adam and Betsey were the parents of Sarah Poe, b. July 15, 1791 in Washington Co., PA and died in Congress, Congress Twp, Wayne Co., Ohio. Sarah married Adam Koffel, b. April 15, 1788 in Rockhill Twp, Bucks Co, PA and died in Congress, Congress Twp., Wayne Co. Ohio on March 14, 1868. Sarah and Adam KOFFEL were the parents of Catherine Koffel, b. Oct. 26, 1813 in Columbiana Co., Ohio and married Lewis T. Kelly (probably somewhere in Ohio, date unknown), b. Oct. 1, 1806 in Jefferson Co., Ohio. 29 Adam was born during the summer of 1747 (or 1745) "at sea" or more likely Prince Georges Co., MD.
20-2 1762 George Jacob Poe, Sr., was murdered and George Jacob Poe, Jr., inherited most of the estate by right of primature. His son, Andrew, went west soon afterward, first apprenticing
his brother, Adam, to a shoemaker. His daughter, Kate, married Isaac Miller, a neighbor.
29-1 1773 Andrew returned from PA and urged Adam to come west with him. Adam moved from Frederick, MD, to Ft. Pitt (recently Ft. Duquesne belonging to the French) where he joined the militia. Some accounts have Andrew and Adam moving west in 1772 or 1774. Adam's portrait was painted in 1774; where?

1785-1794 Adam Poe was elected Captain of a company under Colonel Marshall to defend the frontier of western Pennsylvania against Indians and served at various times under Colonel Baird and Colonel David Williamson. The latter was greatly admired by Adam Poe and he named his youngest son, David Williamson Poe.
50-11:8:8 1786 13 Jan The tract of land that Adam Poe selected in Washington Co. area, PA, was surveyed January 13, 1786, and was named "Poeville." It contained 377 acres adjoining lands of Matthew Ritchie, Isaac Miller*, and John Comly. He and Andrew had come to PA from New England (Maryland-LCW) at the same time as did Philip Jackson and Robert Wallace. Adam later sold this land and moved to Ohio.
They also owned a tract of land prior to 1786 in Smith T., Washington Co. Area, PA, probably Westmoreland Co. at the time, where they lived at the time of the burining of Wallace's cabin. That tract was sold to Arthur Campbell.

Columbiana Co., in Adam's time, included land just west of what is known as Stark Co., OH. Adam & Elizabeth are buried only a mile or so west of what is now Stark Co., OH.
29 1840 28 Apr Adam Kuffle, David W. Poe, and David Kuffle testified that they had seen a page from the Poe family Bible listing the children born to Adam and Elizabeth Poe and it was written in German.
20-2 Daisy Poe Pratt listed Adam's children in a slightly different order but she gave no DOB for any of them.
16-2 1939 Sally (Poe) Kuffle claimed that Adam was married twice. He had, by his first marriage in PA, one daughter born. She claimed that Adam married twice, his daughter by his first marriage was Barbara who married a Mr. Cochran of PA. Adam's second marriage was to Betsey Matthews, widow of William Cochran. Betsey was an immigrant from Ireland. She came to this country when she was 12, the sister of a Presbyterian minister named William Matthews. Sally claimed that his brother, Andrew, born 1742, was six years older than Adam.

He subsequently made other entries and other members of the Poe family came in and made settlements in the same locality, thus forming the nucleus of a settlement which is known today as the Poe neighborhood and from which Poe's Corners takes its name. See account by Adam Poe, Sr. - Adam Poe, Sr. reported family of 5 boys and 5 girls (2 of each surviving). 6 children not identified (1 boy,5 girls). Made river boat trips by canoe and flatboat. Reportedly acquired considerable property but later had heavy losses.

Research done by Don Milligen, Kent, Washington, provided the names of Elizbeth's husband and children. She was described from his records as a daughter of Jacob and Dorthea Hephner.

And that his mother was Elizabeth Cairnes, born 1756 in Pennsylvania and died 1828 in Baltimore, Md. Elizabeth Cairnes Poe (1756-1838) was a patriot of Maryland who superintended the making of clothing for the soldiers. She was born in Pennsylvania; died in Baltimore, Md.
There seems to be more evidence that Isaac's father was Adam, so that lineage will be followed.

His daughter by his first marriage was Barbara who married a Mr. Cochran of PA. Adam's second marriage was to Betsey Matthews, widow of William Cochran. Betsey was an immigrant from Ireland. She came to this country when she was 12, the sister of a Presbyterian minister named William Matthews. Sally claimed that his brother, Andrew, born 1742, was six years older than Adam.

Went to Nebraska to locate more mill sites. Was returned to Brooklyn Center for burial. David W. Poe was a Justice of the Peace in Medina County at one time. 9 1843 David W. Poe moved to Cleveland where he opened a tavern east of Brooklyn near the Brighton Bridge. Died with his son David Jackson Poe in a blizzard on the prairie. Died from exposure after snowstorm.

- 1856 Joseph Poe wrote home about an article he read in the Galena, IL, newspaper about the deaths of David Williamson Poe and David Jackson Poe. They were caught in
a blizzard while searching for a homestead near Nebraska City, Otoe Co., NE. Their arms and legs were frozen and they died when these were amputated. Adam Poe, who was in Nebraska City at the time, also wrote home about their deaths.

Andrew Jackson Poe died in Anson, MO but is buried in Bonaparte Cemetery, Bonaparte, Van Buren Co., IA.
Loved to walk, in great condition. Thought nothing of walking across Iowa. Andrew Poe and Rachel Meek are ancestors of William A.. Poe. In 1835 Andrew Jackson Poe accompanied his parents to Newberg T., Cass Co., MI, and settled in Sec. 22 where he grew to adulthood. He then went to Van Buren Co., IA, where he married Jane Weeks. (This shold have been "Meeks.") To this union were born 9 children. They moved from IA to MO.

20-2 Daniel became a Methodist minister and went to Texas as a missionary prior to the Mexican War.
88 Daniel became a Methodist minister. He went to WI and northern MI.
He met and married a school teacher. They went to OH and then to Mexico. They caught yellow fever and died the same day. They left a son and two daughters. The son, Andrew, was killed in the Civil War near Kenesaw Mountain, GA.
50-11:6 1825 Daniel was converted and joined the Methodist church when he was 16.
p10 1829 He was licensed to preach when he was 20.
1836 May Bishop Soule sent Daniel Poe into Wisconsin to assist Miss Jane West Ingram who was already doing missionary work among the Indians.
1837 Jun Daniel Poe and Jane Ingram were married.
1842 Daniel & Jane answered a call for missionaries in Texas.
1843 Daniel served the Lake Soda Mission.
1844 Daniel was in charge of the San Augustine Mission in July of 1844. He and Jane died within an hour of each other and were buried in the same coffin under the altar of the church at San Augustine. See TEXAS METHODIST QUARTERLY, Vol. 2 #1 page 71.

Was active in keelboat and steamship business. Lived to be 80 per Tom T. Jones, who mentions 4 brothers. PerTom T. Jones, married Lucy Smith; had "large family".

2. Captain Adam Poe was a farmer and a riverboat pilot. He was a Captain and an owner. Some of his boats were the Federal Arch, the America, the Big Foot, the Neptune and the America II.
Buried in Georgetown, PA cemetery. Date of death also listed as 1895.
Religion Methodist Episcopal.

3. Adam Poe, Sr. made a written biographical account in 1887 that appears to support accounts that his grandfather Adam, brother of Andrew, spent most of his later life near Massilon, OH. He reported being taken there by his grandfather when he was about 5 years old (Abt 1821) and that his father, Thomas, built a house there the following year. This was said to be in Wayne Co., where the town of Congress stands. Due to flu, Adam returned to New Lisbon (present Lisbon, OH) with his mother; the following winter, his father moved their family home to Georgetown, PA. Nevertheless, the older Adam and others in the family probably remained in that area (Abt 10 mi NW of Wooster and 35 mi W of Masillon).

97 1852 Thomas Poe commanded the sternwheeler moountain boat, the Georgetown. Various trips were made to the upper Missouri River. The boat stabbed a snag - fatally - up there in 1855.
1881 30 Dec Captain Thomas Poe was living with his daughter, Mrs. Clara Poe Blythe, in St. Louis, MO, when he died. His body was returned to Georgetown for burial.
42-4 Thomas Poe was Captain and part owner of the riverboat, the Nick Wall, which ran into a river bank near Napoleon, Arkansas. Martha was killed when her rescue was attempted. She was hit on the head by an axe. Thomas Poe also owned shares in the boats, the Amelia Poe,
the Clara Poe, the Clifton, the Fearless and the Mary E. Poe.
Captain Thomas Poe and both of his wives are buried in the Georgetown Cemetery. Thomas died 30 Dec 1881 in his 62nd year. Phebe died 28 jun 1855, age 37-8-11.
Mary Jane died 22 Dec 1870, age 37-8-11. (These dates should be rechecked.)

40 1856 Joseph Poe wrote home from Minnesota about an article he read in the Galena, IL, newspaper about the deaths of David Williamson Poe and David Jackson Poe. They were caught in a blizzard while searching for a homestead near Nebraska City, Otoe Co., NE. Their arms and legs were frozen and they died when these were amputated. Adam Poe, who was in Nebraska City at the time, also wrote home about their deaths.

Joseph had sold some of his land to the City of Cleveland. It became the Cleveland Zoo, part of Brookside Park.

Death of Mrs. Dawson

Cynthia Ann Poe, eldest daughter of Andrew Jackson Poe and Rachel Jane Meek Poe, was born in Bonaparte, Iowa, April 14, 1846, and departed this life September 25, 1931. The first ten years of her life were spent in Bonaparte, when with her parents she moved to Boone county and lived until 1865, when they moved to a farm near Anson, Mo., where she resided until her marriage to William Dawson, September 25, 1870. They resided on a farm near Anson until his death twenty-one years ago. She and her son, Frank, continued on the farm until October 1912. The last few years were spent with her daughters, Mrs. Ada Woods and Mrs. Sarah Thompson.

To this union were born nine children: Mrs. Ada Woods of Bonaparte, Mrs. Sarah Thompson, of Donnellson. Clyde and Mrs. Clara Roberson of Lepanto, Ark., Clarence of Marked Tree, Ark., Mrs. Emma Livingston of Pierre, S. Dak., Mrs. Marie Hickman, Bryant, S. Dak., Frank of Peoria, Ill.; and one daughter, Eva having preceded her to the Great Beyond.

She is survived by a number of grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers.

She was a member of the Congregational church, uniting with the church in the fall of 1884 and lived a faithful Christian life.

She was ever a loving mother, a good neighbor and friend.

B. Charles died before this article was written. His obit was included. He had been a resident of Newberg T. for nearly 70 years. He had a farm of 148 acres, raised New Jersy and Poland swine. He was born in Fabius T. where he learned farming and attended school.

1875 He lived with his parents until he was 22.
1875 25 Aug Charles married Carrie G. Thomas. Her father came to Macomb Co., MI, from NY. He had 2 sons and 2 daughters, carrie being his second child. She was 13 when she came west and has lived in Cass Co. ever since. When they were married, they moved to Sec. 22, Newberg T.

Charles worked this farm for 14 years, then moved to the present farm in Sec. 21, also Newberg T. After becoming old and infirm, Charles and Carrie moved into Jones. He belonged to the Grange Farm Bureau, First Baptist Church, and the Democratic Party.

1875 23 Aug Has this DOM for Charles and Carrie. When Charles died, he left behind him 4 daughters, 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers.

I found your pages on Adam Poe’s Family line on Rootsweb.com. I have not been on their site for probably at least a year and a half. Unfortunately, my time does not allow me to work on genealogy full-time or even part-time; only my precious spare time.

My family line is through Adam Poe & Eliza Hosford and their daughter Hattie Poe. In May 2002 or 2003, I had a big find in my line. I was working my way back through Hattie Poe Martin. I had a few things to go on. Well, it turns up that I found out where she and her husband, James are buried. I have burial information cards from the cemetery listing their parents. Wahla!! I discovered Adam and Eliza Poe.

I have not had the time to post my found information on rootsweb, but in the future I would like to. But, I can’t believe the information that you have and most of the names are accurate. I have some changes on dates, though.

Please, contact me. I would like to chat. I would like to know if you are or someone you know is a descendant of this line? Or are you just doing research down the lines of Poe?

Again, it amazes me of the information that you have found. I am a descendent of Hattie Poe and James Martin.

1861 Sep Orlando Poe was promoted to COL, 2nd Regt., MI Volunteers. They assisted in the defence of Washington, D. C. and then participated in the Peninsular Campaign.
1862 29 Nov He was appointed BRIG GEN of Volunteers. He was at the Battle of Fredericksburg.

John Sharpe received a pension for service as private in the Pennsylvania troops under Colonels Butler and Wayne. He was born, 1755, in Pennsylvania.
John Totten served as private under Capt. Isaac Cooper and Col. William Bradford, Philadelphia militia; also in Captain Semple's company, Colonel Dean's regiment. He was born, 1754, in Pennsylvania, where he died.
