- William SHANER, Jr b. 5 May 1840, Trimble Twp., Athens Co., Ohio; d. 27 Jun 1921, Palos, Athens, Ohio; bur. Beach Grove Cem., Perry, Monroe Twp., Ohio.
Notes:
William Shaner jr. became a renowned soldier, both illustrious and famous
during the Civil War. He was a prosperous young farmer when in 1861 he
enlisted itn the thrity-first OVI. He fought in many battes: Stone River, Mill
Springs, Chicamauga, Mission Ridge, Ringold, Dallas, Resaca, Ken, Marietta and
the Seige of Altanta, where he severely wonded. After partial recovery he was
sent to Johnson Island opposite Sandusky, where he served iwth gentleness as
an officer over the camp for the confederate prisioners during the epidemic of
small pox in which so many died. Here he was fortunate in escaping, due to his
vaccination early in life, and he was honorably discharged on August 15, 1865,
after a war record second to none in Ohio.
He was a master Mason a member of Lodge no.470 A&F A M Bishopville Ohio
