    Notes:
    1 NOTE "Westerly and It's Witnesses", by Rev. Frederic Denison A. M.,publishedby J. A. and R. A. Reid, 1878, p230.
"Westerly has often bowed in deep sorrowover the loss of hersons at sea. A few years since, her tears were elicited afreshin respect to the fate of Capt. Peleg Saunders, and his mate,Erastus Bliven. Captain Saunders, born Oct 16, 1820, afterspending 15 years at sea, in different positions and commands, sailed in 1856, as master of the ship "Mary and Jane," from NewYork to Dundee, in Scotland. On his return voyage, loaded withNewcastle coal, he was disabled, and obliged to put back to Corkfor repairs. Sailing again in November, 1856, he was neverheard from. It is believed that the severe gale that shortlyafter swept over the North Atlantic, caused the foundering ofthe ship. The age of Captain Saunders was thirty-six; that ofMr. Bliven, twenty-six.
