ORIN VINCENT, a retired farmer and prominent citizenof Milton,Wis., is a native of Allegany County, N.Y., born on the 4th dayof November, 1807. His parents were Joshua and Olive VINCENT,and to them were borna family of fifteen children, seven ofwhom are yet living. Our subject was reared to manhood in theEmpire State, receiving his education in the public schools, andin March, 1829, was united in marriage with Miss Lucy BABCOCK,who was born in the year 1811, and is a sister of Dr. BABCOCK,whose sketch appears on another page of this volume. The youngcouple began their domestic life in New York, but in June, 1848,left their Eastern home and came to Rock County, Wis. Aboutthree years previous Mr. VINCENT had made a trip to the West,traveling all over this State with a view to making a location.Being pleased with the future prospects of this county, he madea permanent settlement in 1848, taking up his residence onsection 1, in the town of Harmony, where he purchased 100 acresof land. In connection with the work of developing andimproving his land, Mr. VINCENTdevoted considerable attentionto the raising of sheep, owning the finest gradeto be found inthe county. In 1865, he abandoned agricultural pursuits and thefollowing year settled in Milton, where he has made his homecontinuously since,becoming one of its representative andleading citizens.
Mr. VINCENT has beenprominently identified with the publicimprovements of the town, and has ever taken a deep interest inits welfare. He has filled various local offices of honor andtrust, discharging his duties with promptness and fidelity; hasserved as school director, and for a number of years wascommissioner and trustee. In thecause of education he has beenespecially interested, and was the second trusteeof MiltonCollege, which position he has also held in the Seventh DayBaptist Church, of which he is a member. He cast his firstPresidential vote for John Quincy Adams, and supported the Whigparty until its dissolution, when he joined the new Republicanparty, and at each succeeding election has cast his ballot forthe candidates of that great political organization. He votedfor Gen. William Henry Harrison in 1840, and also for theillustrious grandson of the Tippecanoe hero in 1888. Mr. andMrs. VINCENT have never had any family of their own, but haveraised a number of orphan children, and though they havetraveled life's journey together for upwards of sixty years,they are yet hale and hearty for persons of their age.
