1 NOTE Daniel Orson Ormsby was one of the early settlers of Alfred, NYarea. He came from Beckett, MA in the spring of 1839. He camefrom a long line of pioneers. He was a direct descendent ofSir Richard de Ormesby (one of William theConqueror's knights)who took part in the Norman Invasion of England in 1066.

Daniel was a descendent of another pioneer, Richard Ormsby whocame to America on the Abigail in the spring of 1628 and settledon the York River at Saco,ME. Daniel was born on January 20,1819 in Beckett, MA. He was the only son ofDaniel D. and AnnaAlinda (Snow) Ormsby. Both of Daniel's parents passed awaybefore Daniel reached the age of 14. After his father's deathin 1832, he livedwith his grandparents, Elijah and ElizabethOrmsby.

In October of 1832, Elijah filed a pension application under theAct of Congress that was passed on June 7, 1832 which outlinedcertain benefits that were available to those men who hadserved in the miltia during the American Revolution. Based onhis serviceduring the war, Elijah Ormsby received substantialbenefits in the form of government land grants which were passedon to his surviving children and grandchildren when he passedaway on June 8, 1834. Daniel Orson's share was 75 acres of landon the Vandemark, a strip of government land in Allegany County,NY.

WhenDaniel arrived in the Alfred area in 1839, he built a oneroom log cabin on that75 acres in East Valley, five miles fromAlfred.

On March 18, 1840, in Hornellsville, NY, Daniel married SarahDiana Satterlee (born October 21, 1822), thedaughter of Davidand Cynthia Satterlee. (The Satterlee's were direct descendentsof Sir Edmond de Satterlee of Devonshire, England (circa 1200))whose descendents emigrated to New London, CT in 1688.

David Satterlee moved to Alfred Center in 1813. He was a nativeof Broadalbin, CT. He came to Alfred with his family inFebruary, 1813 and purchased 50 acres of Lot #7 from NathanGreen and erected a log cabin on the land. The following year,he purchased another 50 acres. After Daniel and Sarah weremarried, they built their homestead near the logcabin thatDaniel erected the year before.

Daniel and Sarah were members ofthe Second Seventh Day BaptistChurch. This second house of worship was completed in 1855 andit was located in Alfred Centre. David Satterlee (Sarah'sfather) often preached at this church.

No one knows exactly wht prompted Daniel Orson to enlist in theUnion Army. Perhaps the death of his eldest son and theimprisonment of his other son influenced his enlistment on March30, 1864 at Ward, NY. Daniel was in Company B., 179th Infantry;was wounded at the Battle of Petersburg on June 17, 1864 and wastransported to the U.S. Army hospital at Annapolis, MD where hepassed away on June 24, 1864.

1 NOTE Was an "old maid" for much of her life while she taught art inthe local schools. Later she married the local shop teacher,Joe Horney.

Member of the Daughters of the American Revolution,Retired Teachers Association, Cattaraugus County Living ArtsAssociation and Mizpah Capter 162 Order of Easter Star.Surviving are one niece, Rosemary Gray of Olean, one nephewDavid Cone of Depew and several great and great-great nieces.

Funeral services for Nelson Robison of nearby Price Corners, whotook his life with a pistol yesterday, will be held Thurs at 2pm at Myers Funeral Home in Randolf. A sister, Mr JosephHorney, is the only Survivor. Burial to be in CrawfordCemetery.

1 NOTE David Vincent Robison was in the Army Reserve at Alfred, NY, butwas not called to active duty during World War I.

He graduated from NY College of Ceramics in 1921 as a ceramicengineer.

Sometime after hisgraduation, he moved to Zanesville, Ohio andwent to work at the American Encaustic Tile Company. There, heinvented the electric kiln for ceramics and associatedcomponents. The company paid him $1.00/each for his inventionsand made himsuperintendent.

David Vincent Robison entered a worldwide contest and waschosenfrom among seven men to have his tiles put in the HollandTunnel. His tiles are still there in the Northern Corridor.

When DVR lived in Zanesville,OH, the neighbor, George, had twingrand pianos in his music room. Saturday evenings, sometimes,they would get together and play classical music just for theirown entertainment. Turned out that the neighbors heard them andused to sit out in the front lawn to listen. Soon the wordspread and people from all over came and did the same thing.They could really play!

In June, 1934, DVR contracted Scarlet Fever. He died June 30,1934. His death certificate lists the cause of death as acutenephritis - - - kidney failure. His body was transferred toAlfred, NY where he was buried in the Cottrell family plot atAlfred Rural Cemetery.

1 NOTE From email from William Alfred Robison:

The only information that Ihave on Alfred Orson, mygrandfather, was from talking to my grandmother (Helen). Hewas a farmer and a butcher. Apparently, when he wasn't workingthe farm,he was a butcher somewhere in Allegheny State Park.She said that he died out inthe farm field. She remarriedtwice. Mr. Carlberg, whom I never heard aboutand ArthurWinquist who I do remember. Like you, I also miss myGrandmother. Ifondly remember the days we visited her on thefarm and later on just swingingon her front porch swing. Sheworked in a supermarket in Salamanca (Loblaws) prior to herretirement in the meat dept. After her last husband died, myfamilymoved onto the farm which was on the Killbuck NY backroad (between 219 and old17). We farmed it for a few years,but it was tough making a living on 30 milking cows. My father,Willis, worked on the Erie Lackawanna Railroad and then atAVMSignore division in Ellicottville.
