THE BROWN GENEALOGY, by Cyrus Henry Brown, page 12, 14.
She was the granddau of John Randall, the progenitor of the Randallfamily of Westerly RI and Stonington CT. His name first appears atNewport, RI from which place he came to Westerly as early as 1667, wherethe remainder of his life was spent. The Randall land was about fourmiles northeast of Stonington known as Angwilla and considered the finestland of the town. These lands join on the north the lands of Thomas Brown(2), and have been in the Randall name as late as 1875. The Randallfamilies were highly respected and progressive, ranking high in moralcharacter, and prominent citizens of the town.

The foregoing is written especially to show the parentage ofThankful Brown and her sister Elizabeth, and to show the identicallocation where they were born and married.
It is interesting to note that Thankful Brown Main named her oldestson, James, for her father, and it has been interesting to notice forfive succeeding generations that the name James appears in regular orderamong her descendants. This was discovered when the B. & MG was written.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Boston, The Everett Press Company 1907, by CyrusHenry Brown, page 14, 30.
Elder Brown was the first pastor of the Second Baptist Church, No.Stonington, for fifty years and eight months.
SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH OF NO. STONINGTON, NEW LONDON, CT.
The Second Baptist Church of No. Stonington, CT was organized inMarch, 1765, with Elder Simeon Brown as pastor. Elder Brown was born inStonington Jan. 31, 1723, a man of strong native talents; he wasconverted under the preaching of Whitefield, in 1745. He united with Rev.Stephen Babcock in forming the Baptist Church in Westerly, RI in 1750;and was baptized by Rev. Wait Palmer in 17--, being ordained the sameyear. His pastorate and watchfull care over this church extended from theorganization, in 1765, until his death in 1815 - fifty years and eightmonths, a nobel record to be engraved on his monument in Brown Cementeryin his native town.
His descendants may well be proud of the character and theconsecrated life of so novle a man, laying down the burdens of life inhis ninety-fourth year. The self-sacrificing labors and the toweringgrandeur of his character and the wide-spread and abounding influencewith emanated from his peretuate his memory through many generations, leaving a shining record.
The handful of corn on the tops of the mountains grew til now themembership was three hundred and thirty-five. He served this church allthese years without salary, and built the meeting-house from lumber cutfrom his "cedar swamp," with the assistance of his brethren.
It was without paint, both interior and exterior; with galleries onthree sides, a high pulpit on the north side, with an ascent of tenstairs, enclosed with panel work. When the minister was seated he couldnot be seen by the audience. He stood on a small platform, and was acommanding figure. The writer was present when the last service was heldin this old meeting-house, in the spring of 1845; it was like partingwith one's dearest friend, and many tears were shed. It was suggestedthat they better let it stand, but it was taken down and the presenthouse erected the same year.
The ceiling of the porch of the new house was the panelling takenfrom the pews of the old house.
The following items of interest by way of comparison are gleanedfrom the Stonington Baptist Association, as it was first called in thefirst printed minutes, which embraced churches in Rhode Island as fareast as Exeter and Wickford and west to Waterford and Montville, CT.

The Second Baptist Church in North Stonington was organized in 1765,and Deacon Simeon Brown was ordained their pastor in March of that year.He was a native of Stonington and a man of sterling worth, but not anatural pulpit orator. He was greatly beloved by his parishioners, andgathered about him a church of respectable numbers, who loved andsustained him under all the circumstances in which he was placed.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Boston, The Everett Press Company 1907, by CyrusHenry Brown, page 14, 30.
His Revolutionary record: Mr. Joshua Brown was a Lieutenant in Capt.Thomas Holmes' Company of the 8th Rebt., Col. Oliver Smith Commanding;Brigadier Gen. Saltinstall's Brigade. He enlisted Sept. 8, 1776;discharged Nov. 17, 1776; in the campaign around New York.
Joshua Brown (77) bought his farm of Robert Williams in 1786, andfrom the north part of the town came here to live, with his family. Therewas only a partially built house on the farm. The east half was used fora dwelling; the west part, not completed, sheltered the cattle in coldweather. This part, later, was finished with two stories in front and aslanting roof on the back. Some time later, the rear was built up tocompare with the front, as seen in the picture. In this house lived theirson Randall (289), who married Sally Palmer, and a few years later hisson Randall, Jr. (3937), who married Mary A. Holmes, went to housekeepinghere. The name Randall has come down from one generation to the next fromElizabeth Randall, born July 4, 1696, the mother of Joshua Brown. Thishouse was removed in 1878, and a house with all modern improvementsadorns this beautiful location. On this farm have lived the directdescendants of Joshua and Joannah (Rogers) Brown for one hundred andtwenty years. The present owners and occupants, in 1906, are Jeremiah(Jerry) H. (3846), Fanny Ella (3849), who married Charles B. Palmer, alsothe widow of Frederick H. (3849), Mrs. Amelia (Shaffer) Brown.
Joshua Brown and his son Randall had slaves on this farm, and theycleared a piece of land and walled it in for a garden that was given theslaves to cultivate. It is seen at the northeast of the house, somedistance away.
THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. II, 1915, by Cyrus Henry Brown, page 242.
Joseua Brown lived on the James Brown homestead until the death ofhis mother, in 1786, and his children were all born here. He then removedto a farm in the coutherly part of Stonington, where he built his house, living here until he died, Sept. 26, 1824.

Daniel was a Baptist Deacon for many years. About 1792 they moved toBrookfield, Madison Co., New York. Daniel left Conn. settling at S.Broodfield, Madison Co., New York where he purchased a farm of 160 acreswith a frame house about three miles from Five Corners. He set asideone-half acre in the southeast corner for the Main Cemetery. The firstburial there was Thankful (Brown) Main who died 20 Mar 1812 at 95 years. She was the wife of Jeremiah Main. Daniel and Grace and other family areburied here.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. II, 1915, by Cyrus Henry Brown, page 244.
Mr. & Mrs. Main lived in the Main Settlement in Connecticut tilltheir children were all born, and at least one, George married whilethere. They came to New York State with an ox-team and two horses, andremained for a time at Petersburg, Rensselaer Co. George Main and wiferemained a year or so there, at which place their son Jefferson was born. The family came on westward, stopping for a visit with Edward Thurstonand Abigail Main, his wife, who lived near Cooperstown, Otsego Co., NY.Their daughter Susannah remained a year or more with her aunt Thankful. The family moved on, spending a year in the town of Plainfield, thenlocated near So. Brookfield, Madison Co., NY, where Mr. Main purchased afarm of one hundred and sixty acres with a frame house thereon, which wasuncommon in those days. This homestead was about three miles from FiveCorners, where the church was located, with Elder Simeon Brown, Jr.,founder and pastor. Mr. Main owned one of the largest and strongesthorses in the vicinity, named "Old Sampson," which he would mount, andride to church with his wife or daughter. Later his daughter Susannahseemed quite willing to go, mounted on the pillion behind her father. Mr.Main was chosed deacon of the church soon after settling in the Mainhomestead, and his wife and several children became devout members.Deacon Daniel Main was a very will-educated man; he taucht school inConnecticut, and also in New York State, being very proficient in theprofession, as some of his descendants have been also. While inConnecticut he often preached, but did not preach much after coming toNew York State. He was Justice of the Peace, but farming was his chiefoccupation. He was tall, rather slender, and a man of commandingappearance. Being a deep thinker he was listened to very attentively, ashe also possessed a very pleasing voice.
Mrs. Main was short, and rather fleshy. For many years she wasblind. She had a severe attack of typhoid fever, during which she wastenderly cared for by her daughter Susannah, and son Ira Miner and wife. After her recovery she could read and sew without even spectacles, someof her handiwork being in existence now in 1912.
About one-half acre in the southeast corner of the Main homesteadwas set aside for burial purposes and known as the Main Cemetery. Thefirst one to be buried there was Thankful (Brown) Main, wife of JeremiahMain, who died March 20, 1812, aged ninety-five years. Her son DeaconDaniel and wife beside her, and several in the three followinggenerations rest there. In memory of Deacon Daniel Main and wife areunion is held yearly. At first it was held on the old homestead, laterat the homes of different members of the union; but usually, of lateyears, at Summit Lake, a very quiet but picturesque place in the vicinityof Burlington Flats, Otsego Co., NY.

With only one exception, namely, Albert Main, son of Madison Main, all the descendants of Deacon Daniel Main and wife living at BurlingtonFlats and vicinity for the last thirty years or more spell their nameMayne, but the writer has used but one style, to avoid confusing thereaders.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. I, Boston, The Everett Press Company 1907, byCyrus Henry Brown, page 129.
Elder Brown, as he was afterwards called, moved with his family, inMay, 1792, to the wilderness of New York. The year previous he went onhorseback to Albany, NY, and procured a deed of land in the town ofBrookfield. During the summer he made a clearing and built a log house, and in the autumn returned to his family in Stonington. The followingMay, with his wife and children in an ox-cart and he on horseback, theybegan their logn and perilous journey to Brookfield.
The early training of these children was in their New England homein Stonington -- not only from father and mother, but also fromgrandfather and grandmother, for this indefatigable man of God had notonly gathered a church, but guilt a house of worship, largely by hiscourage and energy and with his own hands. Here these grandchildrenlistened to the gospel as it fell from his anointed lips. This fact mustnot be forgotten, for Ruth, the oldens, was twenty-four years old, andPhebe, the youngest, was five years old, when they emigrated toBrookfield. Thus in their childhood days began the development ofChristian life and character which continued, with increasing activities,in their new pioneer home and its characteristic of their descendants tothe present time.
