Notes:
David served with Capt. Boaz Moore's Company of Minute-men, Col. Ephraim
Doolittle's regiment which marched on the alarm on April 19, 1775. He
had enlisted. {See: MA Soldiers in Rev. War., v.7:569}.
He was a Castine, Maine selectman in 1791. He was a laborer. He and
Rebecca were original members of the first Congregational Church of
Penobscot, Maine. He is mentioned at Captain in the Brooksville and
Castine, Maine vital records. Brooksville, Maine was incorporated June
13, 1817 and included Castine east tof the Bagaduce River.
David died unexpectedly on October 2, 1802 age 49. He was goint to
attend areligious conference, but went to the barn hay loft to throw
down some hay for the animals, fell, broke his neck, and died. That was
in Penobscot (Brooksville). Rebecca died in Brooksville November 23,
1833.

Notes:
Having enlisted with older brother Byron on September 12, 1861, he saw
battlein Missouri, Arkansas, and Mississippi. He was a member of the
9th IllinoisCavalry. Wounded in 1862 at Jacksonport, Arkansas, later
captured at Pontotoc, Mississippi. He was moved to different prisons,
wound up at Cahaba Prison, Selma, Alabama and held for 9 months.
After the war he studied at Unversity of Michigan from 1865 to 1868,
received his M.D. from Long Island CollegeHospital, Brooklyn, NY in
1871. Did postgraduate work in antiseptic surgeryin Longdon, England
and also studied in private practice of general medicineand surgery in
London and Paris. Returning to the U.S. in 1872 he established a private
practice of general medicine and surgery in Greeley, CO which lasted to
the end of his life, d. in Greeley August 4, 1901.
He also wrote a book called "Cahaba" detaling his experiences as a
prisoner of war.

was on site and tried to help the victims.

Admitted to the bar in 1984, he had worked for the law firm of A.G.
Mosely,was an assistant D.A. in 1896, left in July 1898 to serve int he
Spanish-American War. Became ill with a rheumatic condition while
serving in the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry in Tampa, FL. This resulted in
a slight limp and he wasrelieved of riding duty and ordered to report to
Col. Teddy Roosevelt as a clerk. When Teddy Roosevelt was serving as
govenor of New York a letter datedFebruary 26, 1900 was wrtten from
Roosevelt to Elihu Root , Secretary of Warin Washginton, D.C.
recommending Frederick W. Hawes for a Second Lieutenancyin the Mounted
Battalion of native troops on the island of Puerto Rico. March 12, 1901
(Roosevelt now Vice President of the U.S.) Roosevelt recommendedHawes
for a regular army 2nd lieutenant commission. Because of ill health,
Frederick turned downthe commission, stayed in San Juan six years and
worked up to the position of Chief Clerk in the Adjutant General's
office. During this time he married Maria Noell, but divorced shortly
after the birth ofthe 2nd child.
Frederick married again Anna Martha Franz June 7, 1907; sometime
during 1910 he moved his family to the wilderness of Henryburg,
Saskatchewan, Canada.
When WWI was breaking out, he moved again to Oklahoma to enlist, but
was turned down because of age and a family. In 1920 he moved to
Centralia, WA where he ran a huge chicken farm.
