Patience Potts, was baptized August 12, 1683, at the First Church ofLondon, CT. She married on Dec. 11, 1700, at Westerly RI, JosephPendleton, who was born at Sudbury, MA, Dec 29, 1661, and died atWesterly RI, Sept. 18, 1706.
She survived her husband and married at Groton on April 28, 1707,Samuel Rogers. Rogers gave bond on June 8, 1707, for the administraton ofPendleton's estate, and on April 26, 1731, William and Joseph Pendletongave Samuel Rogers and Patience, his wife, their mother, receipt for alltheir legacies. Admitted freeman at Newport, RI, 4 May 1725, but did not remainthere long as in 1727 he was appointed with Caleb Pendleton to lay out aroad from the Pawcatuck Bridge (Westerly) to South Kingstown. They madetheir return for this work to the Westerly Town Council, 26 Dec. 1727.
Was Lieutenant in the King's County Troop of Horse from 1732 to 1734inclusive, and Justice of the Peace at Westerly RI, 1736-41. On the 26thof Aug., 1745, he was licensed as an inn-keeper at Westerly and the TownCouncil frequently met at his house of entertainmeent thereafter andissued to Joseph many orders on the Town Treasurer for "Espenses ofCouncil."
From 1738 to 1741 inclusive he was Major of the 3rd Regt. King'sCounty Militia, and became Lieut.-Colonel of the regiment in 1742. In1750 and 1759, he was elected Deputy to the Assembly from Westerly. (R.I.Civ. & Mil. Appts.)
Col. Joseph Pendleton's will was dated at Westerly RI, 13 March1760, and filed 26 May, 1761. The inventory of his extate amounted to6392 Pounds, and included a "silver belted sword" valued at 50 Pounds, asilver watch, at 50 Pounds, a schooner called "Industry" lying in thePawcatuck River, "with Long-Boat and all the utensils unto herbelonging," valued at 1600 Pounds, wearing apparel at 248 Pounds, etc.(Westerly C & P rec., iii, 654-5)

Admitted freeman at Westerly, 4 May 1731, and his long life wasspent in that town as one of the most prominent citizens.
In 1742 he was one of the Council of the First Church of Stoningtonappointed to form a church at Westerly. The records of this church statethat on the 8th of April, 1752, "Decaon William Pendleton desired tocommune with us which was granted." March 22, 1752, "The Revd. Mr. Parkbeing returned from Boston, at the desire of Deacon Pendleton preachedfrom Jeremiah ye 8-2."
In June 1746, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace at Westerlyand served as such for several years thereafter. On the 11th of Nov.,1746, he was directed by the Rhode Island Assembly to repair at cost ofcolony the government's part of the Pawcatuck Bridge; his appointmentrefers to him as "Captain." In 1747 he was a Deputy from Westerly to theAssembly and in May of that year was appointed Major in the thirdregiment of the King's County Militia.
The following year he was re-elected to the Assembly and in June wasappointed Lieutenant Colonel of his regiment. He continued as such during1749 and in 1750 became Colonel of the regiment, as office which he heldfor ten years. In 1757, during the French and Indian War, he wasappointed muster Master, and in 1758, the Assembly voted to pay Col.Pendleton 71 Pounds, 4 shillings for expenses in raising his regiment in1756 (RI Col. Rec.). Among various items in the Westerly records relatingto him we find that on "February 9, 1787, Col. Wm. Pendleton Col. of theRegiment of King's Country Appeared before this Council & pray allowanceof 12 pounds for Numbering the Inhabitants of this town accd to act ofassembly, had an order" (West C & P Rec., iii. 509). It also appears thaton the 30th of August, 1762, it was "Voted that Col. Wm. Pendleton havean order to the town treasurer for the sum of 55 pounds, 1s. old tendorfor his expenses the Last Inferior Court he being Imployed in behalf ofthe town: (West. C & P Rec., iv. 12).
Col. Pendleton was one of the wealthiest men in Westerly. The taxlist for the town in 1757 shows that he was assessed 2,P, 12s-a greatersum than that paid by all the other Pendletons there combined-and theRhode Island census of 1774 says that he owned a slave. There is also atradition to the effect that during the Revolution he fitted out twoprivateers which were captured by the British. However that may be, itcannot be denied he served his country faithfully in that struggle whileacting as President of the Westerly Town Council.
This office Col. Pendleton held continuously from 1762 to 1731, andwhile the war was in progress, the councillors, besides their usualduties raised soldiers for the army, furnished them with clothing, andhad charge of all matters relating to the local defense.
Col. Pendleton further showed his patrictism by subscribing 40P tothe Continental Loan Office in 1779, and 4P more at a later date to helpmake up the deficency at Westerly ("Town Meeting," iv. 131,5). In July,1780, the Rhode Island Assembly appointed his to receive recruits atWesterly. (R.I. Col. Rec., ix, 126).
Another tradition relating to Col. William Pendleton says that hewas a good deal of a sportsman spending much of his time in hunting,accompanied by a negro slave, "Jack," and two dogs, "Prince" and"Granger." He carried two horns of powder with him, which he considered aday's sport to employ. There is much likelihood that there is more than agrain of truth in this tradition, as the Colonel's great-grandson, HadlaiF. Pendleton, of Norwich, NY, who is the authority for this anecdote, aswell as many others relating to the early Pendletons, has Col. William'sold powede-horns, and we have seen that the Rhode Island Census showedthat he was the woner of a slave. We have, however, found no records tothe dogs.
Col. William Pendleton's will, dated at Westerly, RI, 18 August 1785(See Appendix VIII), was probated 30 October 1786.
William-4 Pendleton married (1), at Stonington, Conn., 10 March1725/6, Lydia Burrows, daughter of John, Jr. and Lydia (Hubbard) Burrows.She was born at Groton, Conn., 19 April 1703, and died Westerly, RI 18August 1750. On the 27th of July, 1752, Col. William Pendleton requestedthe Town Council of Westerly to appoint him guardian of his children byhis former wife, so that he could receive the legacies given said wife byher father, John Burrows, late of Groton, dec. (C & P Rec. iii, 323).
William married (2), at Stonington, Conn, 4 April 1751, (25 April inFirst Ch. Stonington Rec.), Mrs. Mary Chesebrough, widow of ZebulonChesebrough, Sr., and daughter of John and Lucia (Stanton) McDowell.(History of Stonington).

20. (Lieut.) Joshua-4 Pendleton, was born at Westerly, RI, 22February, 1705, and died at Guilford, Conn., 29 Feb 1760 (T.R.), or 28February, 1760 (G.S.). His mother and step-father, Samuel Rogers, removedfrom Westerly to Branford, Conn, about 1725, and it is not unlikely thatJoshua went with them, as on the 12th of February, 1727/9, he bought ofAbial Eliot for 22 pounds a tract of land in the adjoining town ofGuilford (Guilford Deeds, iv. 18). On the 25th of April, 1729, Eliotmortgaged to him an adjacent lot of one quarter acre (Ibid., p. 92), andon the 23rd of the following December he sold or mortgaged to Eliot theproperty he owned in Guilford.
Not long afterward he returned to Westerly, where on the 27th ofMarch 1732, with his wife Dorothea as a party to the deed, he sold toStephen Wilcox about 100 acres of land with house, etc., thereon, "Itbeing part of Capt. James Pendleton's farm" (W.I.E., v.345-6). On thesame day he bought of Wilcox for 650 pounds land in Stonington, Conn.(Stonington Deeds, iv, 298).
Joshua does not appear to have settled at Stonington immediately, asin October, 1733, he was admitted freeman at Westerly (T.R.), but he iscalled "of Stonington" in the deed he and his wife made to John Richmondof their Stonington property, 15 Jan 1734 (Stonington Deeds, iv, 502-3).They went back to Guilford soon after this date, where on the 8th ofApril, 1736, Joshua bought of Daniel Hubbard for 304 pounds, three andthree quarters acres of land with house and other buildings thereon(Guilford Deeds, v, 231). On the 17th of April, 1741, he bought anadditional tract of land on the "Great Ox Pasture."
After these various movings about, Joshua settled down permanentlyat Guilford, where he sepnt the rest of his life except for such time ashe was in the Colonial army during King George's War. Like nearly all themen of his day he engaged in farming and stock raising, but to noconsiderable extent, his will shows that his chief occupation wastanning, with its old time adjunet of making shoes, and that he carriedon this business to a large way in Guilford.
Outside of his being one of those chosen to build a wharf at Jones'sBridge in 1744, he does not appear to have taken much active part in thecivil affairs of the town, but he was ddeeply concered in the militaryenterprises of the Colony. In February, 1745, the Connecticut Assemblyappointed Joshua Pendleton of Guilford "To be Ensign in the Regiment ofFoot to be raised and sent from this Government on the expedition againsthis Majesties enemies at Cape Breton, etc. and orders that he becommissioned accordingly." (Conn. Col. Rec.) This regiment saw activeservice in the first campaign against Louisburg, and it is reasonable tosuppose that Joshua was one of Pepperell's hardy New Englanders whobesieged that fortress and effected its capitulation, 17 June 1745.
After such an adventgure as this it was to be expected that Joshuawould continue to take an active interest in military affairs, and weaccordingly find that in May, 1718, the Assembly appointed him Ensign ofthe 2nd Company or Train Band in the 7th Regiment of the Colony, and thatin May, 1755, he was commissioned Lieutenant in the same Company andRegiment *Conn. Col. Rec.). A reference to his soldier life is made inhis will in which he leaves to his son, Increase, "My Artillery andImplements of War." This will, dated 27 Feb 1758, proved March 1760 (SeeAppendex VIII), names wife, Dorothea, son Increase, and daughter DeborahFowler.
Lieut. Joshua Pendleton married Dorothea Ward, daughter of Capt.Andrew and Deborah (Joy) Ward of Killingworth, Conn. (Goodwin's"Genealogical Notes"). She was born 4 Jan 1708, and died at Guilford, 5Nov 1763.

37. Joseph-5 Pendleton (Col. Joseph-4, Joseph-3), was born atWesterly, RI, 26 Oct 1724.
As far as we know Joseph-5 Pendleton was the first of Brian's manydescendants who have been lost at sea. He sailed in his father's illfatedbrigantine which was never heard from after leaving Anquilla in August,1749. When over a year had passed without bringing any news of themissing ship, arrangements were made to administer his estate and to carefor his children.
The Colonial records of Rhode Island show the following:
"Colony of Rhode Island. To the Honable the General Assembly sittingat Providence by adjournment the first Monday in December AD 1750. Thepetition of Joseph Pendleton of Westerly in the county of Kings County,humbly sheweth, that your Petitioner's son Joseph Pendleton, being amarried man with two children, in the month of May AD 1749 sailed avoyage to the West Indies Island and the last account your Petitioner orany other of his Friends had from him was August following, sailedHomeward bound; and is in all probability lost at Sea; since which Time,to wit, in the month of October last past, his Wife was taken away byDeath, and left the two small children and some considerable personalestate in Money, Stock & Household Goods, and as he laft a power ofAttorney to his Wife when he went away, she being now dead, no person hasany power by Law to dispose of any part of said estate for the advantageof the children, and if it should be left in such condition til the TownCouncil has any Right by law to grant administration to any person, greatpart of said Estate maight be wasted, and lost to the great Disadvantageof the Children. Wherefore your petition of said Westerly to grantadministration to some person to take an inventory & make disposition ofsuch part of said Estate as may be thought proper, and the money put outfor the advantage of the children and your petitioner shall as in Dutybound pray &e Joseph Pendleton"

On the 25th March 1751, Col. Joseph Pendleton and William Champlin,"the two grandfathers to the said orphans, Joseph & William Pendleton,sons of Joseph Pendleton, Jr., who is supposed to be lost at sea sincewhich time his widow is Dead, ask that inventory be made of estate, theproberty divided, and eath grandfather take administration of half andcare of one child." (West. C & P Rec., ii, 288)
On the 1st of July 1751, inventory of the estate was presentedamounting to 1515 pounds 10s., and administration given to the towgrandfathers (Ibid., pp. 251-2). On the same day Col. Joseph Pendleton asprincipal, with Benoni Smith and Joseph Champlin, gave bond to the townof Westerly in the sum of 1518 pounds 10s., for the proper administrationby Col. Joseph of one half the personal property of Joseph Pendleton,Jr., supposed to be dead, and for the bringing up of the eldest of JosephJunr's children, viz., Joseph Pendleton. This bond was not recorded untilJuly 1769 (Westerly C & P Rec., iv. 118).

No list of her children has been found ofrecord, and we have been able to obtain the names of only two, with noevidence as to whether she had more or not.

40. Sylvester-5 Pendleton (Col. Joseph-4, Joseph-3), was born atWesterly, RI, 5 Aug 1730. The Westerly records show that in 1757, he paidtaxes of .2s 4d. in that town, and that he was made freeman there, 1 May1760. He was evidently a privateersman in the French and Indian War, asthe records of the Court of Common Pleas of Washington County (thenKing's County), RI [Book F, p. 307], show that "Sylvester Pendleton ofWesterly, mariner, late master of said schooner, Thomas Hazard, John Rossand Henry Wall of Newport, to recover 5000 pounds, and judgment for 1800pounds and costs was given in his favor at the sitting of the Court heldin August 1763.
What became of him subsequently we have not been able to learn. Hisname does not appear in either the Rhode Island Census of 1774 or the USCensus of 1790, and neither his will nor any administration upon hisestate is to be found.
The will of his father, Col. Joseph-4 Pendleton, shows that byFreelove-5, daughter of Col. William-4 Pendleton, Sylvester-5 had a son,Sylvester-6, born about 1749. married Eunice Cobb.
Sylvester-5 afterwards married at Westerly, RI, 16 Jan 1751, SarahChamplin, daughter of William (3rd) and Sarah (Thompson) Champlin. Shewas born 5 March 1725, (Westerly Records).

42. Simeon-5 Pendleton (Col. Joseph-4, Joseph-3), was born about1733, at Westerly, RI, and died there in October 1819. Simeon Pendletonwas a farmer and lived at Westerly nearly all his life. The Westerly TaxList of 1757 shows that he was assessed two shillings there in that year.On the 24th of February, 1766, the Town Council gave him and his family acertificate of residence to the Selectmen of Stonington, Conn., but it isunlikely that Simeon remained there long, as all his children arerecorded at Westerly and no reference appears stating that any of themwere born elsewhere.
He was in all probability the Simeon Pendleton who served as privatein Capt. Joseph Pendleton's Co., Westerly militia, in 1776, and wasappointed Ensign of the 1st Westerly Co., 1st Regt. King's CountyMilitia, in 1777 and 1778, as the other Simeon Pendleton who also livedat Westerly in those years --[221] Simeon-6 -- would more likely be theone who was enrolled in the 3rd Westerly Co., in which were also enlisteda brother and other near relatives of that Simeon.
Simeon-5 Pendleton was one of the executors of the will of hisfather-in-law, Walter Palmer of Stonington (dated 5 Oct, 1785, proved 3Jan 1785), and received therefrom the house at Westerly that Palmerbought of Simeon'[s mother. His own will, dated at Westerly, 12 Oct 1819,proved 25 October 1819 (C & P Rec., Vol. 2, p. 331), names daughtersMercy, wife of Joseph Lawton; Bathsheba Babcock; Sally, wife of DavidPendleton; Lucretia, wife of Libbeus Pendleton; and son Ethan Pendleton.
Simeon married at Westerly, RI, 15 Jan 1760 (10 January inStonington Ch. Records.), Mary Palmer, daughter of Walter and Mercy(Hinckley) Plamer. She was baptized at Stonington, 21 March 1742(Westerly Rec. and "Palmer Groups," page 162).

48. (Capt.) William-5 Pendleton (Col. William-4, Joseph-3), was bornat Westerly, RI, 11 Feb 1726/7, and died at Northport, Maine, 28 Aug 1820(Gravestone).
On the 3rd of March 1751, he received from his father a deed to landat Westerly; this transfer was not recorded until 26 Mar 1760, and isentered on page 354 of Book 9, Westerly Land Evidence. On the 24th ofMarch in the year he transferred this land with "mansion house" to hisbrother Amos for 2000 pounds. William-5 was then of Stonington, Conn.,and this deed was also signed by his wife Judith. William Pendleton hadbeen admitted freeman at Westerly, 1 May 1753 (RI Col. Rec., iv, Sup.43), but subsequently removed to Stonington, where he began buying land27 June 1761, making successive purchases until 28 Feby. 1767, when hebought of Joseph Champlin 94 acres for 242 pounds. Some of his propertywas at Long Point. He was elected surveyor of highways at Stonington, 18Dec 1760 ("Town Votes," ii, 218).
Tradition says that William Pendleton owned a schooner and traded tothe coast of Maine, and the History of Islesboro [p.10] says he camethere in 1769, taking up 600 acres at the extreme southern end of theIsland, upon which he soon settled his family. William sold his lasttract of land and his house at Stonington to John Hillard, 11 Jan 1769.Previous to this he had sold to William Morgan for 612 pounds, 10s.,about 85 acres at Long Point, Stonington, 3 March 1767 (StoningtonDeeds).
Islesboro, then known as Long Island, was claimed by Isaac Winslowof Boston, as a part of his wife's inheritance in the "Waldo Patent," andin 1771 William Pendleton secured from him a lease.

Amos Pendleton, who was one of the longest lived men in the family,spent nearly all his ninety-three years in his native town except forwhat time he was away at sea. Dennison's "Westerly & Its Witnesses"speaks of him as a master mariner, and he is generally referred to as"Capt." Amos in the Westerly records. Yet in the deed given him byWilliam and Judith Pendleton of Stonington, to a mansion house and landat Westerly, on the 24th of March, 1760, he is called "Blacksmith". andhe may have followed this occupation first. For this property Amos paid2000 pounds. (Westerly Land E., ix, 355).
As befitted a son of Col. William Pendleton, he took an active partin the affairs of the town, serving as one of its councilmen from 1784 to1792, besides holding minor offices. In May, 1765, he was appointedLieutenant of the First Westerly Co., King's County Regt., and wasre-appointed in 1766 (RI Civil & Mil. App'tments). The Rhode IslandCensus for 1774 shows that Amos Pendleton was the woner of two slaves inthat year.
On the 30th of May, 1774, the Town Council "Voted that Capt. AmosPendleton have an order on the Town Treasurer for 6/8 for 40 quarts ofmilk for the sick in the Small Pox [hospital] (Westerly C. & P. Rec., iv.241).
In the Supplement to "New York in the Revolution" it is stated thatAmos Pendleton was one of the refugees from Long Island to Connecticut.It would not appear, however, that he had removed to Long Island, as allhis children born during the Revolutionary War had Westerly as theirbirth-place. It is more likely that Amos as captain of a vessel, assistedthe refugees to leave the island.
On the 18th of Sept., 1776, he was the sixty-fifth signer of the"Resistance Act" drawned up at Westerly on that day by tested theirloyalty to the Continental government. Just what services Amos performedin the Revolution cannot be determined absolutely, owing to the fact thatthe records do not distinguish between him and his son, Amos, Jr., exceptonce, all other accounts referring merely to "Amos Pendleton." It wasprobably Amos, Sr., however, who was one of the "Alarm Men" of Westerly,Edward Bliven, Captain, drawn for three months on the 16th of Jan. 1777,to serve the third month (Westerly "Town Meetings," iii, 160), as thesewere the older men of the town who did guard duty while the younger oneswere away at the war.

She afterwards married at Westerly, RI Capt. Isaac Sheffield (3rd).He d. 1797. The Probate records of Stonington show that on the 4th Augustin that year there "Appeared in this Court Isaac Sheffield & refused totake Letters of Administration on the Intestate Estate of his father,Capt. Isaac Sheffield, later of Stonington, dec. This Court hathappointed William Sheffield and Amos Sheffield Administration on theIntestate Estate of their father, Capt. Isaac Sheffield."
In the division of his property, 20 April, 1799, receipts for 207P11s. 4 1/2d. were given by Reuben and Deborah Cheseborough, Edward andSarah Hancox, Isaac Sheffield, "eldest son of the dec'd," Samuel andPolly Breed, Zebulon and Freelove Hancox, Zebulon Hancox for children ofhis first wife, Lydia, and by William Sheffield for the "heirs of JamesSheffield, fourth son of deceased" (Stonington Prob. Rec., vi, 228).

Up to the time Peleg Pendleton was fifty years old he made his homeat Westerly, RI. In 1757 he paid a tax there of 4s 7d. Early in life hebegan going to sea, and on the 4th of Oct. 1762, he bought with JamesBabcock for 6000 pounds "old tenor" (present value about $1.25 a pound),the 36-ton schooner, "Dalphin." In this vessel Peleg had a quarter shareand Babcock the balance (Westerly Records, x, 485).
During the smallpox epidemic in Westerly in 1774, it was voted bythe Town Council on the 28th of March of that year, "That Capt. PelegPendleton have an order on the town treasurer for 3 pounds, 12s, 8 1/2d,for his services in sending the nurses and getting the necessaries forthe people in the smallpox [hospital]". (C.& P. Rec., iv. 237).
On the first of May, 1775, Peleg was given a deed to 250 acres ofland in the township of Frankfort, Hancock Co., Province of Maine andstate of Massachusetts. Not long afterwards he made a clearing there andleft his son, Peleg, Jr., in charge of the property while he returned toRhode Island for the rest of his family. In the meantime the battle ofBunker Hill and the siege of Boston had shown the colonist that thedifference between them and the mother country could only be settled byprolonged war, and Peleg, believing that his family would be safest inWesterly, decided to remain there until the struggle was ended.
He had early opportunity to show his allegiance to the newgovernment the colonies had formed, subscribing his name as thesixty-fouth signer to the "Test Act" circulated at Westerly in 1776. Onthe 3rd of June, 1777, he was elected Lieutenant of Capt. James Babcock'sWesterly Train of Artillery. Between Nov. 6 and Dec. 6, 1777, he servedas a private in Capt. Edward Bliven's detachment from Col. Joseph Noyes'regt. militia (RI Military Returns). No futher record of him appears atWesterly save that on the 17th of Sept. 1781, he witnessed the will ofhis old associate, James Babcock.
Upon the colse of the Revolutionary War, Peleg Pendleton with allhis family, except the oldest daughter, removed to Maine and settled uponthe estate he had bought eight years before. He found that the log-househe had built there had fallen to pieces, and no trace of his son, Peleg,Jr., was to be found. What became of him has always remained a mystery.
Lient. Pendleton spent the rest of his life upon this farm. On the16 May 1789, he was a petitioner with his son, William and others, fromthe plantation of Frankfort, asking that the Mass. Legislatureincorporate that plantation into a township to be called Knoxburgh. Theirnames also appear in the later petition, 20 Nov 1789, praying forincorporation into a township to be known as Knoxbury. On 24 Feb 1794,Peleg's property came within the bounds of the township of Prospect,organized on that day, and a still later division, 13 Feb 1845, broughtit into the present town of Searsport. In the meantime, Maine, which hadbeen a District, or Province of Mass. ever since Brian Pendleton's time,was set off as a separate state in 1820, and Hancock Co., was divided 7Feb 1827, the western portion, in which lay Frankfort, forming part ofthe new county of Waldo. The reader should keep in mind these variousdivisions and changes when noting hereafter the birth-places, etc., ofPeleg's descendants, for to save repeating these facts so many times weshall generally refer to all of these events as having occurred atSearsport, Maine.

53. Benjamin-5 Pendleton, was born at Westerly, RI, 18 Sept 1738,and died there 29 Dec 1824. Like many of the early Pendletons atWesterly, he went to sea as a young man, and in time became a mastermariner. There are few references to him upon the town records, and wesujppose he led the quite life of the average citizen, participating inthe town meetings but not seeking office for himself. In one item thatdoes mention him, however, in 1764, we have a glimpse of one of the galaoccasions of the olden time, when it was "Voted that Benjamin Pendletonhave liberty to sell Strong Liquor on the Day Mr. George SheffieldLaunches his vessel that is now on the Stocks" (West. C & P Rec. iv.)
The Westerly tax List of 1757 shows that he was assessed twoshillings in that year, although he was under age. Benjamin Pendletonplayed an active part in the Revolutionary War, as shown by the followingrecords:
"On the 30th of Aug., 1775, the tender of the British ship of War"Rose" Capt. Wallace, pursued a small American craft to the warf atStonington. Capt. Benjamin Pendleton was there and with other brave mendrove the tender off. The "Rose" then cannonaded Stonington, wounding oneman but killing none" (Westerly and Its Witnesses:). The "HIstory ofStonington" (p. 39) gives a slightly different version of this affair.Wheeler's account says the British had demanded the surrender of a vesselload of cattle which had just been landed there, and upon the refusal ofthis demand the tender of the warship sent to seize the cattle, but wasfired upon and driven off, after which the bombardment took place. Thismay have been the basis of the tradition related by Hadlai F. Pendletonof Norwich, NY, to the effect that the British vessel once pursuedBenjamin Pendleton's sloop, and when he took refuge in a small creek, twoboat loads of sailors were sent to effect his capture. His crew made offhastily, but Benjamin and his son David, then age 12 (which would putthis incident seven years after the other one), remained aboard,concealing themselves. Benjamin loaded his two muskets nearly to themuzzle, and when the boats were close by, he fired twice upon them,killing and wounding a large munber of the assailants, a bloody repulseto the attempted cutting out expedition.
In 1776, Benjamin Pendleton was enrolled as a private in Capt.Joseph Pendleton's Company of Westerly Militia (RI Rec.) On the 18th ofSeptember in that year, he was the 68th loyal citizen of Westerly to signthe "Test Act," pledging allegiance to the new State government (Westerly"Town Meetings," iii, 155).
In April 1779 his sloop "Louis," laden with corn, was scezed by theauthorities at Hartford, Conn., through fear that it was destined for theBritish, but was released upon evidence being shown that the cargo wasfor the people of Stonington (Conn. Col. Rec.). On the 14th of October,1781, he was enlisted as a private in Capt. Allin's Company, Col.Christopher Smith's Regiment, and was discharged the next day (RI Rev.Rec.). In 1779 he subscribed 14 pounds to the Continental Loan Office tohelp make up the deficiency of the amount to be raised at Westerly underAct of the General Assembly, September 1779 (Westerly "Town Meetings,"iv, 5).
Benjamin's most notable achievement in the Revolution was thecapture of a British privateer, the following account of which is fromDenison's "Westerly and Its Witnesses"; "During the Revolution, Capt.Joseph Dodge of Westerly owned and commanded a vessel named the"Lucretia" In his patriotic zeal, he transformed her into a privateer.Securing a suitable armament and accepting Benjamin Pendleton as Lieut.and Smith Murphy as gunner, he was ready to put to sea, but was takensick. No time could be lost. Lieut. Pendleton accepted the command andthe "lucretia" turned her prow to the ocean. Near Block Island she fellin with an English privateer, the "Huffa" and brought her intoStonington."
Another undertaking in which Benjamin was engaged appears in the"New York Calendar of Historical Mss." {Vol. I, p. 615}, and is asfollows:
"State of New York to Dann Collins, Dr." {1777}.
"To go from Say Harbour to East Hampton with John Minor and BenjaminPendleton of Connecticut & Abraham Loper, a Soldier in Captain Davis'Company and taking from Coll. Gardner's House 130 Fire Arms BayonetsCatneh Boxes & 3 Silver Headed Swords, and taking from Coll Mulford's 3Casks of Power & 2 Boxes of Lead all which we brought to Sag Harbour puton Board a Vessel Loaded at Sea Brook & Delivered to Coll Livingston.
Also my taking another Time 3 Casks of Powder from the House ofMalthy Gilston Esqr Soughampton & bringing the same to Guilford whichPowder is now in my possession -----

The descendants of Benjamin Pendleton are quite numerous and arescattered all over the United States. His sons -- except the youngest --were master mariners, as were many of his grandsons also. The latergenerations have followed very diverse occupations.
Benjamin Pendleton married at Westerly, RI, 9 Feb 1763, LoisBurdick, daughter of David and Mary (Thompson) Burdick. She was born atWesterly, 1 April 1738.

55. (Capt.) Joshua-5 Pendleton, was born at Westerly, RI, 6 May1744, and died there while on a visit, 9 April 1824. He married atWesterly, 6 Jan 1768, Anna (Nancy) Clarke, daughter of Elisha and Mary(Potter) Clarke. She was born 7 Oct 1717, and died 17 June 1740, atNorwich, Conn.
Joshua Pendleton was a master mariner in early life, and retiredfrom the sea when he was about fifty years of age. Up to that time hemake his home at Westerly, RI, where he was more active in military thanin civil affairs. The Rhode Island records show that he was appointedEnsign of the 1st Company Militia at Westerly in August, 1774,re-appointed, June, 1775, commissioned Lieutenant, 31 Oct, 1775, and1776, Captain, May, 1777, and received subsequent appointments as Captainup to Feb. 1780, Joshua Pendleton served as Captain in Col. Noyes'Regiment, and received payment for "Provisions found" from 25 July to 1August 1778.
His name does not appear often in the Council and Probate Records atWesterly, but on the 29th of March 1784, Capt. Joshua Pendleton andWilliam Babcock, Esq., were appointed to set a value of the rent ofThompson's farm. About 1795 he removed to Norwich, Conn. where he boughta farm on the Bozrah line and lived there the rest of his life. Most ofthis farm lay in Bozrah, but his house was on the Norwich side of theboundary. The record of his death upon the Norwich records refers to himas "Deacon" a poisiton he held for many years at the First Church of thattown. His will, dated at Norwich, 30 Dec 1813, filed 5 May 1824 (NorwichProb. Rec., xiii, 372; see Appendix VIII), names wife Anna, sons Joshua,William, Elisha C., and Adam; Daughters Nancy Rogers, Patty Palmer, LucyLathrop, Clarissa Harlowe Adams, Polly Bennett, and Lydia Bennett;grnadson, Joseph Pendleton. In the naming of a daughter "ClarissaHarlowe." it would appear that the literature of his day was not unknownto Deacon Joshua.
The descendants of Capt. Joshua Pendleton are more numerous throughhis daughters than through his sons. Those bearing the name Pendletonhave been mostly farmers with a sprinkling of business and professionalmen. Most of them are now located in Connecticut, New York and Colorado,with a few in Michigan, California and otgher states. Several of themhave been membhers of state legislatures.

Rec. ofRevolutionary soldiers, to a Peleg "Pendleton" of Bridgewater, whose nameappears in a list of men raised to serve in the Continental Army fromCol. Mitchell's 3rd Plymouth County Regt., as returned agreeable to orderof Council of 7 Nov 1777; he was engaged for the town of Bridgewater, andjoined Capt. J. Allin's Co., Col. Bailey's Regt., to serve three years.No records of a Peleg Pendleton appears upon the Bridgewater town books,however, nor upon the records of Plymouth County.
