He first settled in Watertown, MA and was made freeman there Sept 3,1634, and was Deputy for six years to the General Court. He moved toSudbury and helped settle that town, and was selectman for several years. From Sudbury he went to Ipswich. He was a member of the famous artillerycompany of Boston. He removed to Portsmouth, NH about 1651, and wasDeputy there five years. In 1653 he purchased 200 acres of land nearWinter Harbor, Saco, ME, and after a few years he returned to Portsmouth, where he made his will, which was prov en April 5, 1681. He was aneminent man in his day, and held the office of captain and major for manyyears, besides important civil and military offices.

Brian Pendleton was married when he came to this country but we havenot found his wife's family name. Her Christian name was Eleanor, asappears in every deed she signed with her husband from 1648 to 1680. Shesurvived the Major for about eight years as on the 28th of July, 1688,Pendleton Fletcher of Saco petitioned Governor Andros for a confirmationof his (Fletcher's) title to lands received from Brian Pendleton, hisgrandfather. "Also 100 acres given yr petition by his Grnadmother, latelydeceased and purchased by her husband of one Jno West, lying upon SacoRiver, on ye Southward side." This was the land which Brian Pendletonbought of West 15 March 1678/9. York Deeds, 1:80.

Founders: Brian Pendleton. Watertown, MA, 1634. Sudbury 1638. Ipswich.
Portsmouth, NH, 1651. Saco, Maine, 1677. Died Winter Harbor, Maine, by 5April 1681. Captain of Militia. Major. Deputy. President Maine Province.Associate Justice.
IGI names five children, the first two being born in London.
Beers and Wheeler list only two children. Early New England
Pendletons lists five children, with four of them probably being born in
England. Marriage record at St. Martin's Church, Birmingham, England, reads: "Aprell 22, 1619, Bryene Pendleton et Ellinor Prise." Birth offirst child, Nicholas, recorded at same church. He probably died young.Next three probably born in London and the fifth probably in Watertown,Mass. After the birth of Nicholas, the Pendletons are found in 1625 inthe Parish of St. Sepulchre's without Newgate in London. That church'srecords were lost in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
Brian Pendleton was probably among the original settlers of Watertown,Mass. On Aug. 14, 1634, he was chosen one of three men to "order" thecivil affairs of the town--an office which later became known as that ofselectman. On Sept. 3, 1634, he was made a freeman. On March 3, 1636, hewas chosen as deputy from Watertown to the General Court ofMassachusetts. He was several times reelected to both positions. He alsowas one of the original members of the Military Company of Massachusetts.
In 1639 he was one of the first settlers of Sudbury, Mass., and in1640 was appointed to drill the military company there. He also was aselectman and commissioner in Sudsbury. He returned to Watertown in 1646and again to the General Court. Referred to in Watertown as "Lieut.Pendleton."
Moved to Topsfield, Mass., in 1648-49 and to Portsmouth (later N.H.)in 1651 where he was appointed an associate justice by the General Courtof
Massachusetts, serving until 1665, when he moved to Winter Harbor, Maine.
In Portsmouth he was chosen commander of the train band (militia).
selectman, town treasurer, and deputy to the General Court, all for
several terms, as well as serving in other positions. In fact, Everett
Hall Pendleton, in Early New England Pendletons, says he and his son,Capt.
James Pendleton, "ran the affairs of Portsmouth."
In Winter Harbor (Saco), he was a selectman, elected a Burgess toattend
the General Court of the Province of Maine, a "surveyor of highways," a
justice for "small causes," and in 1668 was appointed major of the YorkCounty regiment and also an associate justice of the Province of Mainewhen
Maine once more came under the jurisdiction of Massachusetts. He laterwas
town clerk, commissioner, and assessor of taxes at Saco. In 1680 he wasnamed
deputy president of the Province of Maine.
Brian Pendleton died during the winter of 1680-81, either in WinterHarbor
or Wells, Maine, at the home of his granddaughter, Mary. Two Wells menwere
appointed to take the inventory of his estate, indicating he may havedied
    there.
During his lifetime, Brian gave son James 140 acres of land in Sudburyand
also 700 acres in Westerly, Rhode Island, that he had obtained in abusiness
transaction. He also apparently turned over business interests inPortsmouth to James. The major's will left land on the Great Island inPortsmouth to grandsons Pendleton Fletcher and Brian Pendleton, Saco areaproperty to his
wife, and housing and land at Wells to Mary and Hannah Pendleton, daughters of James and his first wife. This included "three plantationsor lotts."
The land left to his wife included 640 acres along the Saco River, hishouse and 300 acres at Cape-Porpus (now Kennebunkport), and "all myseveral islands in or near sd. Cape-Porpus."
The trust deed to the 700 acres of land in Westerly stated that James
was to hold it intact during his lifetime. Afterwards it was to bedivided
equally amongst James' children by his second wife, except the oldest
surviving son should have a double share.
Wheeler: Brian Pendleton's will is on pages 722 and 723.
TAG: "Bryene pendelton et Ellinor prise Aprell 22, 1619. (Register ofSt. Martin's, Birmingham, England, 1554-1653, p. 108). Note. BryanPendleton, who came to New England, was born about 1599, by deposition. His son Nicholas, baptized 4 Dec. 1619, at St. Martin's, Birmingham,England, probably died young.
Babcock and Allied Families: Brian Pendleton, born in England about1599.
Will probated 23 April 1681 in York County Court, Maine. First appears inNew
England in Watertown, MA, 24 Aug. 1634; removed to Sudbury as an original
settler in 1639 and returned to Watertown in 1646. He removed to Ipswich,MA,
where he bought land 9 Nov. 1648, and then moved on to Portsmouth, NH,about
1651. In October 1652 he was one of the commissioners sent to Maine toassert
the authority of Massachusetts there, although he remained a resident of
Portsmouth. He served as a major in King Phillp's War, but it isuncertain
whether he served from Portsmouth or Maine. He was a special magistratein
Winter Harbor, Maine, and an associate justice for York County, Maine, and also headed the York County Court of Pleas. "In the course of hisjudgeships he permitted no Quakers to be whipped or witches hanged."[More info on pages

Colonial Wars: Major Brian Pendleton, born about 1599, died 1681;married
    Eleanor Price 22 April 1619.
NEHGR--Article, "Early Settlers of Essex and Old Norfolk" (v7): Brian
Pendleton, a witness at York (Maine), 1653. Age about 70 in July 1669.Captain Brian, Portsmouth (New Hampshire), 1647. Vol. 3, in "Memoir ofCharles Frost," says he was one of eight men appointed [about 1678] tothe provincial council of Maine by the the govenor and council ofMassachusetts
Migration: Bryan Pendleton bought Watertown, Mass., land 6 May 1646
from Nicholas Knapp. Brian Pendleton was one of the executors named inthe
8 April 1647 will of "Margaret How of Water=Towne Widow." Mentioned in 26May
1646 land transaction, along with Edmond Goodenow, in Sudbury. Capt.Pendleton mentioned in Kittery, Maine, records, indicating he hadproperty there in 1648. Brian "Pemelton of Saco" (Maine) on 6 June 1667acknowleged he sold to William Dodge and others, about 1653 or 1654, a600 acre farm "formerly belong[ing] unto Old Mr. Thomas Dudley" and "washonestly paid for it."
Puritan Village: Three residents of Watertown, Peter Noyes, BrianPendleton, "a wealthy London man," and the Rev. Edmund Brown petitionedthe General Court of Massachusetts for a town grant below Concord. Noyeswas termed an administrator and Pendleton a land speculator who "hadenjoyed power in the first few years of Watertown and then fallen out offavor." The General Court appointed Pendleton captain of the townmilitary company after Sudbury was formed. By 1647 he had returned toWatertown, but despite that departure he was awarded more Sudbury land in1658, even though he had left Sudbury some 12 years earlier. Others whohad moved away were not awarded new land. [Perhaps Pendleton was favoredbecause he was a town founder.] Also, he threatened to sue the town in1647, reason not specified, but the Middlesex County Court shows norecord of the case, according to Puritan Village author Powell. [Powell'slabel of land speculator for Pendletown appears accurate since he movedon to other areas, accumulating more and more land. See above.]
NEHGR, v8, pp239-240: Indian War Papers. Reports an Indian attack inMaine in 1675, in which Major Pendleton was asked to help by sending 12men.

HISTORY OF STONINGTON Ct, by Wheeler, page 532, 533.
Was first at Watertown MA, then at Sudbury MA, and came to WesterlyRI in 1669. He was in the early Colonial wars. He was admitted to theFirst Church of Stonington, CT, Nov 7, 1680.
His will is dated Feb. 9, 1702, but does not mention his son James,by the first wife, nor daughters Sarah or Patience by the second wife. They probably died young or without children.

BRIAN PENDLETON AND HIS DESCENDANTS, 1599-1910, Compiled by Everett HallPendleton, Privatley Printed MCMX, found in the DAR Library, Washington,DC. Page 1-77.
Capt. James Pendleton, was born in England about 1627, or 1628, ansindicated by the facts that he was admitted freeman at Watertown, Mass.,10 May 1548, and that on the 26th of July 1672, he testified atPortsmouth, NH, he was forty-four years of age.
On the 21st of Oct 1650, James Pendleton and Mary, his wife, ofWatertown, Mass., sold to George Parkhurst, "Same towne" five or sixacres known as "crocked meadow" (Middlesex Co., Mass., Deeds, I, 17).Shortly afterwards he removed to Sudbury, Mass., where he served on acoroner's jury in May, 1654.
In 1671, James began to dispose of the property he had accumulatedat Portsmouth and vicinity, with his wife, Hannah, he sold land andbuildings at Portsmouth to Thomas Thatcher.
On the 25th Jany. 1688, James Pendleton bought of Nathaniel Lynde1,000 acres on the sea-coast of Westerly, including Watch Hill. He sold asmall part of this land and the rest he willed to his sons, Joseph,Edmund, and Caleb.
His death occurred in Westerly on the 29 Nov, 1709. Like his fatherhe was active in public affairs until the time of his death and like hisfather too, wherever he went he became at once one of the leadingcitizens.
The will of James-2 Pendleton, names wife, Hannah, sons: Joseph,Edmund and Caleb, daughters Ann Borwn, Eleanor Pendleton and DorothyPendleton, "children by my present wife, Hannah," and daughters Mary andHannah "had by my former wife."
No reference is made by Capt. James Pendleton to his sons, James-3and Brian-3, named in his father's will in 1677, or to any heirs of thesesons, and as no mention of any such has elsewhere appeared, it would seemindisputable that James-3 and Brian-3 died without issue. James-3 haddied previous to 1698, but we have nothing to show what became ofBrian-3.

Went to Watertown, Mass., with parents from England. They moved toSudbury, and he was given 140 acres of land by his father. Moved toPortsmouth, N.H., where he was in business with his father. There he wasa selectman, 1663 to 1668; town clerk, 1663 and 1664; one of thecommissioners (local magistrates) to determine small actions from 1667 to1671, and captain of the Portsmouth military company from 1666 until1674, his last year in Portsmouth. He owned property on the Great Islandand continued in business after his father moved to Winter Harbor (Saco),Maine, in 1665.
He moved to Stonington, Conn., being granted land, and also had some700
acres of land given him by his father. Those 700 acres are in what is now
Westerly, Rhode Island, but both Connecticut and Rhode Island onceclaimed
the Westerly area. (The land was given him in trust, with instructions itbe
passed on to his children by his second wife.)
James, a staunch Puritan, favored Connecticut over the more liberalRhode
Island, but he eventually lost that fight. He continued his businessactivities and was affluent enough to be referred to as "Esquire" and"Gentleman."
He was a selectman in both Stonington and Westerly, sold intoxicants,
imported sugar from Barbados and had dealings with tobacco planters in
Maryland. Dealing in liquor was not considered reprehensible in thosedays, and a man could engage in that business, as well as in politics, and still be a community leader and a pillar of the church.
About the time he moved to Stonington, the King Philip's War brokeout, and Capt. James took part. He also may have participated in thegreat Narragansett fight. He was awarded land in Voluntown for hisservices during the war. He also obtained captive Indians whom he soldinto slavery.
Eventually, James obtained more property in Rhode Island, buying 1,000acres at Watch Hill in Westerly. His Watch Hill home still stands. It isunclear when he moved from Stonington to Westerly.

That Brian Pendleton had at least one other son besides Capt. Jamesseems evident from the Middlesex Co., Mass., deed already referred to inwhich Brian refers to James as his "eldest sonne." That Caleb Pendletonwas brother to James seems resonable certain.
In the list of landholders at Portsmouth, NY, in 1657, Caleb is setdown as the owner of 19 acres of land, and his name occurs immediatelyafter those of Brian and James. In 1661 the town allotted an acre of landto Capt. James Pendleton which was bounded on Caleb's property. Tjefollowing year Caleb was at Boston, and we have no further record of himuntil in the list of inhabitants at Westerly, RI, 1689, it is stated that"Lot 41 originally granted to Caleb Pendleton is given to GeorgeLandfeare." [Lanphere]. Caleb, son of James-2, was but ten years of agein this year, and so would hardly have had any grants of land made him.

An AF record says he was born in Sudbury, Mass., but ENEP says
father Brian was a founder of Sudbury in 1639, some nine years afterCaleb
was born. The first record of Brian in America was in Watertown on Aug.14,
1634, so Caleb probably was born in London.

Mary Pendleton, only known daughter of Major Brian Pendleton, married Rev. Seth Fletcher, probably before 1655. He may have been son ofWilliam Fletcher of Concord, Mass., who died 3 Apr 1677, age 85 years. He was mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Major Brian Pendleton, in 1677, but in 1698 his half-brother, Joseph Pendleton, sold to Nicholas Morey, land on the Grand Island at Portsmouth, NH, "one acre of which was given to my brother, James Pendleton." (Rock, Co., NH,Deeds, ix, 321.) It would appear from this that James-3 died unmarried prior to 1698.

reference appears in his father's will. Probably died unmarried and without

Eleazer Brown and his wife made their home in Westerly and later inStonington, in the part of that township which was afterward set off toform North Stonington. In the division of their father's property, Annreceived his house as appears in the agreement of the heirs: pg. 46.
After the deaths of Ann and her husband, her surviving childrendeeded to Edmund and Joseph Pendleton of Westerly, for ten pounds alltheir rights in the estate of "our grandfather, James Pendleton late ofWesterly, and of 'Briant' Pendleton". History of Stonington: Ann Pendleton, born 12 Nov. 1673.

Since James Pendleton was in Portsmouth from 1665 to 1670, Annpossibly was
born there, according to this information, but gravestone, erected many
years after her death, says she was born six years later in Westerly,Rhode
Island. Both say she died at age 60.

    Tombstone reads:
Ann / Wife of / Eleazer Brown / & Daughter of / Capt. James Pendleton /Born in Westerly RI / 1673 Died aged / 60 years

An AF record says she died Nov. 30, 1734. New England Marriages Prior
to 1700 says she was born in 1667. Back to square one.

"Early New England Pendletons" says Ann's mother was from Sudbury,Mass.
Ann could have gone to her parents' home for births. Births of some ofher
children were recorded in both Sudbury and Portsmouth.

Colonial Wars: Ann Pendleton, born 12 Nov. 1673, died before 1732.Married Eleazer Brown 18 Oct. 1693.

Major Brian Pendleton left 700 acres of Westerly, Rhode Island, land intrust to his son James, which was to be divided among James' children byhis second wife. Each was to receive one share, except for the oldestson, who would receive two shares. An instrument dated April 11, 1711,named Ann's share, one of seven. Typically, it is listed in her husband'sname. "...Elizer brown hath ye third lott & ye house that was Capt.Pendletons stands on itt ye bounds thereof is in ye surveigh & ye s'dElezer brown had s'd lott by a Joynt agreement of the heirs of Capt.James Pendleton & payed sertaine sumes of money therefore unto NicholasCottrill William walker as was inserted in Capt. James Pendletons will &for a confirmation of s'd lott with all ye housing orchards fencingspausters woods timber & all other priveleges & apurtenances whatsoeverbelonging to s'd lott or hereafter shall belong thereunto" (are, ineffect, assigned by the above Cottrill and Walker, as well as by Edmundand Caleb Pendleton) "to ye s'd Elezer brown his heirs Executsadministrators &
assigns to have & to hold in severallity forever to use poses and injoyas his owne proper Estate forever..." From Brown Genealogy, Vol. II.
No wonder Ann and Eleazer lived in Westerly as well as Stonington.

Four generations later, Caroline M. Wood Brown, wife of German S.Brown, bought Broome County property in her own name from German'sbrother. The lot of the wife had improved, if not the size of the lott.

Eleanor was admitted to the Stonington church, 24th Oct 1702, andmade "public confession" on the 14th of June 1706. (Church Rec.).
The date of her marriage is not of recorfd but is must have occuredbetween the 14th April 1709, when she was named as Eleanor Pendleton inher father's deed of that date, and the 6th of June 1710, when with herhusband William Walker, she signed an agreement concerning the divisionof Capt. James Pendleton's farm (W.E.E., ii, 90).
William Walker did not long survive his wife, as on the 13th ofApril, 1713, the Town Council of Westerly appointed Nicholas Cottrell,Jr., administrator of the estate of William Walker, deceased, and orderedCottrell to pay to "widow Hannah Pendleton, grandmother of WilliamWalker's only child Sarah, the some of 7 pounds, 10s, annually until saidchild was seven years old, provided the grandmother does not refuse totake the child". In this event Cottrell was directed to hire some oneelse to take the child, or else do it himself. It is quite evident fromthis that Eleanor had died before her husband.

He was old enough to witness a deed made by his uncle JamesPendleton on the 13th of June 1681 (York Deeds, III, folio 93). On the25th of May, 1671, Brian Pendleton executed a trust deed of Joshua Moodyand Richard Martin "For the Intyre affection that I beare my Grandson(now my adopted Sun) Pendleton Fletcher (I) have granted unto him all mynecke of Land on which I now lyue, as far as the Mill, together with twoislands, etc." (York Deeds, II, folio 97).
Pendleton Fletcher was constable of Saco in 1681, and selectman in1685. In 1693 he was Lieutenant of a company of soldiers stationed at astrong stone fort built on the river bank at Saco Falls. The Journal ofJohn Pike notes that on the 7th of August 1607, "Pembleton" Fletcher withhis two sons w4ere taken by the Indians, and three soldiers of Saco fortwere slain as they were leaving Cow Island. One of the sons wasrecaptured with the slaughter of three or four of the savages (NH His.Soc. Col. Vol. III, p. 49). Pendleton Fletcher died in captivity, probably at Quebec, about 1698, and his widow administered his estate in1700.
He and his wife Sarah Hill had seven children, born before 1690(Savage). One of his sons, Pendleton-4, Jr., was captured four times bythe Indians. He was a prominent citizen of Biddeford, Me., where he was aSelectman and Deputy to the General Court.
He removed later to Arundel, Me., where he died in 1747.

James Brown (38), son of Eleazer (11) and Ann (Pendleton) Brown, born Stonington, Conn., July 1, 1696. He died Feb. 2, 1750, agefifty-five years. He married Elizabeth Randall, May 5, 1718, by Rev.James Noyes, of Stonington. She was born July 4, 1696 and died Aug. 25,1786, age ninety-one years. Internment in Brown Cemetery. His wife,Elizabeth, was the daughter of John Randall and Abigail ___, whose familyname and birth does not appear on record. She was the granddaughter ofJohn Randall, the progenitor of the Randall family of Westerly, RI, andStonington, Conn. His name first appears at Newport, RI from which placehe came to Westerly as early as 1667, where the remainder of his life wasspent. The Randall land was about four miles northeast of StoningtonBorough, known as Angwilla and considered the finest land of the town. These lands join on the north the lands of Thomas Brown (2), and havebeen in the Randall name as late as 1875. These farms now, in 1906, aremostly owned by Elias Miner (1164) and his sons. The Randall familieswere highly respected and progressive, ranking high in moral character, and prominent citizens of the town.

THE BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol. 2, by Cyrus Henry Brown, pp. 241.
It must be remembered that when James Brown was born the country wasin a primitive state, almost a vast wilderness. His father, Eleazer, withhis axe, had begun to let in the sunshine in a few places, and to stirthe virgin soil and scatter a little seed, making an opening for futuresettlers. James Brown built his house on lands first set off to hisfather, Eleazer (11), on the most beautiful situation of any of the landspurchased by the three Brown brothers. This house built by James Brownwas located opposite what is now the Union Cemetery. The compilerremembers the old, old house from 1840 to 1845, which soon after was torndown. It was a one-story house, fronting south, with east end frontingthe country road. The house and barn were built of native lumber, sawedat the mill erected by his father, and assisted by the older son,Jonathan and James, the subject of this sketch. The barn fell down beforethe house was pulled down.
The house contained but four rooms on the first floor; there mighthave been an attic. The compiler was in and out of these during fiveyears of his boyhood. The house stood on a gradual sloping plateau, affording a most picturesque view for miles around. The land is rich andfertile. The father of the compiler hired the land for a number of years, and on the same the compiler worked for five years. After the house wasremoved, the well covered, and grounds cleared and leveled off, there wasnot a thing to show the spot where these illustrious children were born.

Brown, p266, cites New London Probate Records, Vol. G, p. 179, 2Dec.1757. Heirs mentioned: Widow Mary Brown (indicating a second wife)Jeremiah Brown, 2nd son (1st son Nathan died at the age of 2); Eleazer, first son; John Butler and wife Mary, eldest daughter; Rebeckah, thirddaughter; Timothy, third son; John, fourth son; Peleg, fifth son; ComfortBrown and wife Temperance, second daughter; Phebe Brown, fourth daughter;Ruth Brown, fifth daughter.
The Brown Cemetery in North Stonington has no grave recorded for thisEleazer or his wives. The Stonington Historical Society reports: "Quiteoften before the 1770's they used only a crude fieldstone to mark agrave. Head-
stones were for the really well-to-do or the well-organized." Thegravestones for Eleazer and Ann Pendleton Brown were erected many yearsafter their deaths by a descendant. This could account for Ann's birthdate info on the
tombstone not jibing with other sources.
Stonington Cemeteries, film 3,096: A Mary Brown died 20 Nov. 1785,Cemetery 47, p353. Stonington Historical Society reports this Mary Brownwas the daughter of Stephen and Hannah Brown. Apparently she nevermarried.
Wheeler in Brown section of his book says Eleazer Brown and TemperanceHolmes, both of Stonington, were married in 1723. In the Holmes section,he says a Temperance Holmes, born 29 Jan. 1707, daughter of Joshua, married (1) 10 May 1727 John Smith and (2) James Treadway. Joshua livedin what is now North Stonington. [Apparently two Temperance Holmes.]Colonial Families of America, Vol. 4, page 467, says a Temperance, daughter of Joshua Holmes, born 29 Jan. 1707, married John Smith ofGroton 10 May 1727. He was born 14 June 1704 and died 22 Dec. 1758. [Seenotes for this Temperance Holmes, RIN 97. She died after 10 Dec. 1761.That was the day she married her second husband--many years after theother Temperance had presumably died.]]
Brown Genealogy has the same info as Wheeler in his Brown section, butformer says info is from Stonington town records. Both say Eleazer andTemperance were married in 1723.
An IGI record gives a 1 June 1728 (typo?) marriage date, married inStonington Township. Everett Hall Pendleton says they were married in1723 and that Temperance was Eleazer's first wife and Mary ________ washis second.
Mary was on the scene 14 Nov. 1736, according to records of the NorthStonington Congregational Church. Rebecca was born 19 Jan. 1735--22months earlier. That date is from two films on Stonington vitals. Browngenealogy and Wheeler say 19 June 1735. Transcribing error? June becameJan or Jan became June. Assuming Mary was Eleazer's second wife, shewould be the mother of Phebe, Timothy, John, Peleg and Ruth (all bornbetween
4 July 1737 and 27 June 1749). Temperance Brown, presumably, would be thedaughter of Temperance (Holmes) Brown. Jeremiah and Rebecca probably werethe children of Temperance also, but one or both could be Mary's, sincewe have found no marriage record for Eleazer and Mary. [I will allot thechildren through Rebecca to Temperance.]

Regardless, it appears Mary was my Peleg's mother.

Records of Rev. Joseph Fish of the Congregational Church of NorthStonington say Eleazer II was a church member before 1 July 1733 and hiswife Mary was received into the church and baptized 24 Oct. 1742. It alsosays Eleazer II and wife Mary "received baptism" 14 Nov. 1736, same dayas five Brown children. Church records state that Eleazer, Jeremiah,Rebecca, Mary and Temperance were baptized 14 Nov. 1736 and werechildren of Eleazer Brown and wife Mary and that Peleg Brown, son ofEleazer and wife Mary, was baptized 16 Dec. 1744.

[North Stonington Church records also say an Eleazer Brown of Westerly,R.I., married Sarah Die, 10 Nov. 1742. This, according to Everett HallPendleton, was Eleazer, son of Jonathan Brown and Elizabeth Pendleton, who probably died in the French and Indian War.]

Wheeler cites New London Probate Records, Vol. G, p. 170, 2 Dec. 1757.(This doesn't jibe with the tombstone death date). Heirs mentioned: WidowMary Brown (indicating a second wife); Jeremiah Brown, second son (firstson Nathan died at the age of 2); Eleazer, first son; John Butler andwife Mary, eldest daughter; Rebeckah, third daughter; Timothy, third son;John, fourth son; Peleg, fifth son; Comfort Brown and wife Temperance, second daughter; Phebe Brown, fourth daughter; Ruth Brown, fifthdaughter.

A Stonington deed, info from John Henderson, says Lt. John Ashcraftsold a
small quantity of Stonington land to Elizor Brown. This was mentioned ina land record dated 15 June 1717 in which Ashcraft sold a tract of land, less the small quantity previously sold to "Elizor" Brown, to PeterBelton of Groton. The Elizor could refer to either Eleazer Brown Jr. orSr.

The taxlist for the town in 1757 shows that he was assessed 2,P, 12s-a greatersum than that paid by all the other Pendletons there combined-and theRhode Island census of 1774 says that he owned a slave. There is also atradition to the effect that during the Revolution he fitted out twoprivateers which were captured by the British. However that may be, itcannot be denied he served his country faithfully in that struggle whileacting as President of the Westerly Town Council.
This office Col. Pendleton held continuously from 1762 to 1731, andwhile the war was in progress, the councillors, besides their usualduties raised soldiers for the army, furnished them with clothing, andhad charge of all matters relating to the local defense.
Col. Pendleton further showed his patrictism by subscribing 40P tothe Continental Loan Office in 1779, and 4P more at a later date to helpmake up the deficency at Westerly ("Town Meeting," iv. 131,5). In July,1780, the Rhode Island Assembly appointed his to receive recruits atWesterly. (R.I. Col. Rec., ix, 126).
Another tradition relating to Col. William Pendleton says that hewas a good deal of a sportsman spending much of his time in hunting, accompanied by a negro slave, "Jack," and two dogs, "Prince" and"Granger." He carried two horns of powder with him, which he considered aday's sport to employ. There is much likelihood that there is more than agrain of truth in this tradition, as the Colonel's great-grandson, HadlaiF. Pendleton, of Norwich, NY, who is the authority for this anecdote, aswell as many others relating to the early Pendletons, has Col. William'sold powede-horns, and we have seen that the Rhode Island Census showedthat he was the woner of a slave. We have, however, found no records tothe dogs.
Col. William Pendleton's will, dated at Westerly, RI, 18 August 1785(See Appendix VIII), was probated 30 October 1786.
William-4 Pendleton married (1), at Stonington, Conn., 10 March1725/6, Lydia Burrows, daughter of John, Jr. and Lydia (Hubbard) Burrows. She was born at Groton, Conn., 19 April 1703, and died Westerly, RI 18August 1750. On the 27th of July, 1752, Col. William Pendleton requestedthe Town Council of Westerly to appoint him guardian of his children byhis former wife, so that he could receive the legacies given said wife byher father, John Burrows, late of Groton, dec. (C & P Rec. iii, 323).
William married (2), at Stonington, Conn, 4 April 1751, (25 April inFirst Ch. Stonington Rec.), Mrs. Mary Chesebrough, widow of ZebulonChesebrough, Sr., and daughter of John and Lucia (Stanton) McDowell.(History of Stonington).

    20. (Lieut.) Joshua-4 Pendleton, was born at Westerly, RI, 22February, 1705, and died at Guilford, Conn., 29 Feb 1760 (T.R.), or 28February, 1760 (G.S.). His mother and step-father, Samuel Rogers, removedfrom Westerly to Branford, Conn, about 1725, and it is not unlikely thatJoshua went with them, as on the 12th of February, 1727/9, he bought ofAbial Eliot for 22 pounds a tract of land in the adjoining town ofGuilford (Guilford Deeds, iv. 18). On the 25th of April, 1729, Eliotmortgaged to him an adjacent lot of one quarter acre (Ibid., p. 92), andon the 23rd of the following December he sold or mortgaged to Eliot theproperty he owned in Guilford.
Not long afterward he returned to Westerly, where on the 27th ofMarch 1732, with his wife Dorothea as a party to the deed, he sold toStephen Wilcox about 100 acres of land with house, etc., thereon, "Itbeing part of Capt. James Pendleton's farm" (W.I.E., v.345-6). On thesame day he bought of Wilcox for 650 pounds land in Stonington, Conn.(Stonington Deeds, iv, 298).
Joshua does not appear to have settled at Stonington immediately, asin October, 1733, he was admitted freeman at Westerly (T.R.), but he iscalled "of Stonington" in the deed he and his wife made to John Richmondof their Stonington property, 15 Jan 1734 (Stonington Deeds, iv, 502-3).They went back to Guilford soon after this date, where on the 8th ofApril, 1736, Joshua bought of Daniel Hubbard for 304 pounds, three andthree quarters acres of land with house and other buildings thereon(Guilford Deeds, v, 231). On the 17th of April, 1741, he bought anadditional tract of land on the "Great Ox Pasture."
After these various movings about, Joshua settled down permanentlyat Guilford, where he sepnt the rest of his life except for such time ashe was in the Colonial army during King George's War. Like nearly all themen of his day he engaged in farming and stock raising, but to noconsiderable extent, his will shows that his chief occupation wastanning, with its old time adjunet of making shoes, and that he carriedon this business to a large way in Guilford.
Outside of his being one of those chosen to build a wharf at Jones'sBridge in 1744, he does not appear to have taken much active part in thecivil affairs of the town, but he was ddeeply concered in the militaryenterprises of the Colony. In February, 1745, the Connecticut Assemblyappointed Joshua Pendleton of Guilford "To be Ensign in the Regiment ofFoot to be raised and sent from this Government on the expedition againsthis Majesties enemies at Cape Breton, etc. and orders that he becommissioned accordingly." (Conn. Col. Rec.) This regiment saw activeservice in the first campaign against Louisburg, and it is reasonable tosuppose that Joshua was one of Pepperell's hardy New Englanders whobesieged that fortress and effected its capitulation, 17 June 1745.
After such an adventgure as this it was to be expected that Joshuawould continue to take an active interest in military affairs, and weaccordingly find that in May, 1718, the Assembly appointed him Ensign ofthe 2nd Company or Train Band in the 7th Regiment of the Colony, and thatin May, 1755, he was commissioned Lieutenant in the same Company andRegiment *Conn. Col. Rec.). A reference to his soldier life is made inhis will in which he leaves to his son, Increase, "My Artillery andImplements of War." This will, dated 27 Feb 1758, proved March 1760 (SeeAppendex VIII), names wife, Dorothea, son Increase, and daughter DeborahFowler.
Lieut. Joshua Pendleton married Dorothea Ward, daughter of Capt.Andrew and Deborah (Joy) Ward of Killingworth, Conn. (Goodwin's"Genealogical Notes"). She was born 4 Jan 1708, and died at Guilford, 5Nov 1763.

    21. Edmund-4 Pendleton, Jr. (Edmund-3), was born probably atWesterly, RI, and died early in 1789, at Stratford, Conn. He was admittedfreeman at Westerly, RI, 7 Jun 1732 ("Town Meetings," Book 1, page 52),and was an inn-keeper there for a number of years, as the Town Counciland Probate records show he was licensed annually to sett "strong liquor"between 1744 and 1752.
On the 28th of Sept. 1747, Edmund Pendleton, Jr., was made bondsmanfor Lieut. John Garner, "Late of Stonington, now Cohabiting in this town"(C & P rec., iii, 126), and in 1750 he was administrator of his father'sestate.
On the 25th of Mar 1754, it was voted by the Town Council ofWesterly, "That the Clerk of this Council Gave a Certificate to yeSelectmen of Stratford that We do own Edmund Pendleton his wife andfamily to be inhabitants of this Town & as Such Will Receive them fromthat town When required" (C. & P. rec., iii, 298).
Edmund-4 Pendleton probably removed to Stratford shortly afterreceiving this certificate, and the rest of his life was undoubtedlypassed in that town. Both Edmund and his wife were living in 1786, asshown by the will of their son, Solomon (Appendix VII), which reads: "Inconsideration of the care and tenderness of my dear parents to me in myinfancy I do give and bequeath unto my brother Daniel five hundred poundssterling the value thereof in landed property, . . . on considerationthat my said brother Daniel do support and maintain them in a comfortablemanner during their lifetime."
On the 29th of January, 1789, William Pendleton was appointedadministrator on Estate of Edmund Pendleton, late of Stratford, deceased(Strantford Conn. Probate rec., ii, 19). The inventory taken thefollowing day and submitted 3 Feb 1789, including only furniture andwearing apparel to the total of 15.13.9 Pounds. (Ibid., ii, 20).
On the 26th May 1792, administrator's account against estate ofEdmund Pendleton was allowed. 6.10.6 pounds (Ibid, iii, 82).
Edmund-4 Pendleton's marriage evidently did not occur until he was amiddle-aged man. Five of his sons took active parts in the Rebolutionarywar, and the record of their services shows them to have formed anexceedingly patriotic family.
Edmund-4 married at Stonington, Conn, 9 Apr 1738, Susannah King(Stonington Church Records).

    22. Hannah-4 Pendleton (Edmund-3), was baptized 28th July 1700(First Church of Stonington, Conn.), and died in 1751, at Westerly, RI.She married James Britton, of Dighton, Mass. That he was the James-5Britton, son of William-4 and Lydia (Leonard) Britton, and grandson ofWilliam and [6] Mary -3 (Pendleton) Britton, or Bretton, seems evidentfrom the facts that on the 3rd of June 1733, he, "James Brettan ofBristol [County], Mass.," was given a deed by Caleb-3 Pendleton to allthe latter's rights in the estate of his grandfather, Brian Pendleton, and of his father, James Pendleton (Rockingham Co., NH Deeds, xx, 228),and that in the settlement of his own estate, of which his widow wasappointed administratrix, 19th October, 1736, Caleb "Pendleton" was paid24 pounds, William "Brittain" 12 pounds, and Ebenezer "Brittain" 7 pounds13 shillings. (Bristol Co., Mass., Probate Rec., x, 172). William andEbenezer Britton, as shown in our account of [6] Mary-3 (Pendleton)Britton-Cross-Morey, were sons of William-4 and Lydia (Leonard) Britton, and as far as the records show no brittons were living in Dighton orTaunton at this period except the descendants of [6] Mary-3.
The will of Hannah-4 (Pendleton) Britton, dated at Westerly, RI,25th July, 1751, probated 26th August, 1751 (C.& P. Rec. iii, 270), gave8 pounds 8s, to aunt Anna Jones, rest of estate to daughter Hannah; incase Hannah died without issue, estate to go to brother Edmund Pendleton, and sisters Mary, Dorothy and Rebecca. Oliver Steward was named asexecutor. The inventory amounted to 715 pounds, 19s, 10d.

    24. Rebecca-4 Pendleton (Edmund-3), was born probably at Westerly,RI; her date of death is unknown. She married, 30 Aug 1741, OliverSteward (Stewart), (First Church, Stonington, rec.), born 12 Feb 1719,son of William and Sarah (Church) Steward (History of Stonington, page603). For some years after their marriage they lived at Westerly, whereOliver bought land of Joshua Rathbun on the 9th day of the 5th month,1746 (W.I.F., vii, 365). Prior to 1756 they removed to Stonington, asthey called themselves of that town in the deed they made to JonathanFoster of their Westerlyt property on the 13th of January in that year(Ibid., ix, 205)
What became of this family afterwards is unknown, as none of theirnames appear later upon the Westerly, Stonington, or New London records. It is possible that they may have removed to Voluntown, Conn., whereOliver received a tract of land by his father's will -- dated 30 Oct 1753(New London Probate rec., Book F, p. 569). The church records ofVoluntown, however, do not refer to him. We have accordingly been unableto determine wehther or not Oliver and Rebecca had other children besidesthe following three given in the Westerly records.
That they may have had other children seems not unlikely, and Mr.Edwin Vincent of New York City states he has somewhere come across arecord which indicates Oliver and Rebecca had additional children,Oliver, Jr., and Dorothy.
NOTE -- A possible clue to this family may be given in the US Censusof 1790, in which the names of Oliver and Daniel Steward appear asresidents of Cornwall, Conn., the latter, however, evidently being aminor. The Litchfield District Probate Records do not refer to them.

    31. Elizabeth-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was baptized 25 Jun, 1699(First Ch. Stonington, Conn.) She married Jonathan Brown. In thesettlement of Caleb-3 Pendleton's estate, Jonathan Brown gave theexecutor, Benoni Smith, a receipt for his wife, Elizabeth Brown, who wasnamed in Caleb's will as "my daughter, Elizabeth Brown" (Westerly C & Prec., iii, 330). This Jonathan Brown was undoubtedly Elizabeth's firstcousin, Jonathan-4, born 12 July 1694, son of Eleazer (11) and Ann-3)Pendleton) Brown, as is indicated by the names of their children and bythe fact that they lived upon the land inherited by Ann-3 from herfather, James-2 Pendleton.
No list of the children of Janathan and Elizabeth -4 (Pendleton)Brown appears upon the vital records of Westerly, but the land andprobate records of the town give us four of their names as follows:
On the 14th of June 1756, Jonathan Brown and Elizabeth, his wife, conveyed to William "Brumley" [Bromley] land in Westerly (W.L.E., ix,218). The index to this record reads, "William Brumbley from his fatherBrown." William Bromley had married Elizabeth Brown, 9 November 1743. Theland records show further that Jonathan Brown and his wife, Elizabeth, made deeds of gift to their sons, Eleazer and Ebenezer, on the 23th June,1714, and the 3rd January, 1764, respectively (Ibid., v.324 and x,7).They also deeded five acres to their son, "Bryan" adjoining WilliamBromley's land, 3rd January, 1764 (Ibid., x, 5), and sold land to WilliamWilliam Vincent, 14th June 1756 (Ibid., x, 218). On the same day "Bryan"Brown and Mehitalde, his wife, deeded land to William Vincent.
On the 27th March, 1769, "Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, wife of JonathanBrown, represented that her husband had sold his farm and is about tomove into some distant land and one third the money said land sold forwas paid to Benjamin Wilbur by her Request for her support, and she nothaving security for same requests that town council that they wouldreceive the money from Wilbur for her use and support in her old age." (C& P. Rec., iv, 123).
Now on the 25th December 1769, it was voted by the Town Council topay the Town Treasurer 1 pound 9 1/4d. for "Briant" Brown's taxes out ofthe money received from Benjamin Wilbur and belonging to Mrs. ElizabethBrown (Ibid., iv, 136). Furthermore, on the 15th July, 1762, EbenezerBrown declared "that in the year 1756 he heard his brother Eleazer saythat if he never came back he gave his son Jesse Brown to his brotherBryant Brown to do by as his own son & further saith that his saidbrother died soon after." Elizabeth Brown also declared she her her sonEleazer make this statement a little before his death (C & P Rec., iv,13).
Besides these four children Jonathan and Elizabeth were undoubtedlythe parents of that Jonathan Brown, entry of whose marriage upon therecords of the Second Church of Stonington (now North Stonington) refersto him as "of Westerly". The contemporaneous Jonathan Brown, Jr., ofStonington, son of Jonathan and Hannah (Richardson) Brown, was only tenyears old at this time."
An item on page 28 of Book III, Westerly "Town Meetings," alsoindicated that another child should be included in this family, as itstates that "Jonathan Hankes and Hannah Brown, daughter to Jonathan Brownof Westerly," were married in 1752.

BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol II, Boston, The Everett Press Co., 1915, by CyrusHenry Brown, page 217.
They lived upon land inherited by Ann Pendleton from her father,James. No list of children of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Pendleton) Brownappears upon the vital records of Westerly, but the land and probaterecords of the town give us four of their names. From the foregoingrecords we may set down the issue of Jonathan and Elizabeth Brown inabout the following order.

    30. Caleb-4 Pendleton, Jr. (Caleb-3), was baptized 6 June, 1697, atStonington, Conn. (First Ch. Rec.), and died in 1740, at Colchester,Conn. He was living at Westerly, RI, as late as the 9th of Jan. 1736/7,when he witnessed the will of James Babcock of that town. On the 11th ofMarch following, he bought from William and Hannah Douglas, and John andElizabeth Douglass, a hundred acre farm in Colchester, Conn., for whichhe paid 800 pounds (Colchester Land Records, v,1). He removed toColchester shortly afterwards, and the records of that town show he wasadmitted a freeman there, 1 April, 1740. His death occured not longafterwards, as his will, dated 15 May 1740, was probated 10 June 1740.
Caleb-4, Jr., was evidently in prosperous circumstances for thosedays, as the inventory of his estate amounted to over 1600 pounds; itincluded among other items; farm, 1000 pounds; three Indian boy servants, all at 55 pounds; gun and sword, and notes due from Ichabod Randall,Benoni Smith, James Tilkey, Daniel Tennant and Peter Bulkeley. The Indianboy servants of Caleb's may have been the progenitors of the Indiansbearing the name of Pendleton who have turned up in later records.
Caleb-4 Pendleton, Jr., married at Westerly, RI, 25 October 1716,Mary Randall, daughter of John and Abigail Randall; she was born atStonington, 16 December 1798. Less that a year after Caleb's death, shemarried at Bozrah, Conn., 26 Febrary, 1744, Stephen Stark (Fifth Book,"Early Conn. Marriages.")
On the 5th of May, 1741, William Treadway of Colchester, attorney to Stephen Stark, "In right of his wife, Mary Stark, who was thewidow of Caleb Pendleton of Colchester, dec., " moved the Probate Courtat Hartford that her thirds or dowry of the real estate of the saiddeceased be set out to her (Hartford Probate Records, xiii, 88).
Caleb-4 Pendleton's first four children were born at Westerly, RI,and are recorded there on p. 112, Vo. I of Town Meetings, etc. The twoyoungest are named in Caleb's will and perhaps were born at Colchester,Conn.

He lived there and atStonington until about 1750, when he removed to Dutchess Co., NY, thusbecoming the first Pendleton to settle west of Connecticut.
On the 18th of October, 1727, he convayed to James Pendleton threeacres of land in Westerly, "Situated on the northwest corner of land Inow live on" (WlL.E., v, 211), and on 6th April 1730, he sold land to hisbrother Caleb (Ibid., v, 182).

According to the schedule of Capt. James-2 Pendleton's will Brian-4was to receive certain lands at Watch Hill if his brother Caleb-4, Jr.,died before their father, Caleb-3. As this event cames to pass, Brian-4fell heir to this property which he disposed of by an interesting deeddated 17 Feb 1752 (WLE, vii, 388), of which the following is an abstract:

No record of Brian-4 Pendleton married at Stonington, Conn., 11March 1725, Anna Wilcox (First Ch. Rec.). She was probably the daughterof William and Dorothy (Palmer) Wilcox, born at Stonington, 14 June 1700,as is indicated by deed of gift given by William Wilcox of Stonington, tohis grandson, John Pendleton of Colchester, on the 2nd December, 1754(Stonington Deeds).

That Ruth had some difficulty with her step-children in thesettlement of this estate is evident from the following: "At a meeting ofBenjamin Wilbur, being cited to appear before the Council to answer thecomplaint of Joseph Wilbur executor to Benjamin Wiolbur [that she hadconcealed some of the personal property of the dec.] appeared and madeoath that she had presented all the personal estate of said deceased tosaid Executor. . . in order that said Executor might make an Inventory ofsame" (Ibid., p. 203).
Ruth probably died early in 1787, as on the 19th of March in thatyear inventory of estate of widow Ruth Wilbur was taken by Joshua andNathan Pendleton.
