Edmund was taken to Westerly, RI, with the rest of his father'sfamily when about seven years of age and made that town his home untilhis death.
On the 18th of April, 1674, he was baptized at the FirstCongregational Church of Stonington, Conn.
On the 28th of July 1700, Edmund Pendleton and Mary, his wife, wereadmitted to membership in the First Church of Stonington (ChurchRecords).
On the 30th of April, 1750, inventory of his estate was presented tothe town council for probate. It amounted to 1375 pounds and includedwearing apparel...etc.
The descendants of Edmund Pendleton, Sr., are not numerous, as manyof them remained unmarried, and of those who did marry few had largefamilies. The marriage of Edmund does not appear to be of record, but wehave his wife's first name, Mary, from the Stonington Church records.
His children, as shown in the administration on his estate and inthe baptismal records of the Stonington Churches are in uncertain order.

21. Edmund-4 Pendleton, Jr. (Edmund-3), was born probably atWesterly, RI, and died early in 1789, at Stratford, Conn. He was admittedfreeman at Westerly, RI, 7 Jun 1732 ("Town Meetings," Book 1, page 52),and was an inn-keeper there for a number of years, as the Town Counciland Probate records show he was licensed annually to sett "strong liquor"between 1744 and 1752.
On the 28th of Sept. 1747, Edmund Pendleton, Jr., was made bondsmanfor Lieut. John Garner, "Late of Stonington, now Cohabiting in this town"(C & P rec., iii, 126), and in 1750 he was administrator of his father'sestate.
On the 25th of Mar 1754, it was voted by the Town Council ofWesterly, "That the Clerk of this Council Gave a Certificate to yeSelectmen of Stratford that We do own Edmund Pendleton his wife andfamily to be inhabitants of this Town & as Such Will Receive them fromthat town When required" (C. & P. rec., iii, 298).
Edmund-4 Pendleton probably removed to Stratford shortly afterreceiving this certificate, and the rest of his life was undoubtedlypassed in that town. Both Edmund and his wife were living in 1786, asshown by the will of their son, Solomon (Appendix VII), which reads: "Inconsideration of the care and tenderness of my dear parents to me in myinfancy I do give and bequeath unto my brother Daniel five hundred poundssterling the value thereof in landed property, . . . on considerationthat my said brother Daniel do support and maintain them in a comfortablemanner during their lifetime."
On the 29th of January, 1789, William Pendleton was appointedadministrator on Estate of Edmund Pendleton, late of Stratford, deceased(Strantford Conn. Probate rec., ii, 19). The inventory taken thefollowing day and submitted 3 Feb 1789, including only furniture andwearing apparel to the total of 15.13.9 Pounds. (Ibid., ii, 20).
On the 26th May 1792, administrator's account against estate ofEdmund Pendleton was allowed. 6.10.6 pounds (Ibid, iii, 82).
Edmund-4 Pendleton's marriage evidently did not occur until he was amiddle-aged man. Five of his sons took active parts in the Rebolutionarywar, and the record of their services shows them to have formed anexceedingly patriotic family.
Edmund-4 married at Stonington, Conn, 9 Apr 1738, Susannah King(Stonington Church Records).

22. Hannah-4 Pendleton (Edmund-3), was baptized 28th July 1700(First Church of Stonington, Conn.), and died in 1751, at Westerly, RI.She married James Britton, of Dighton, Mass. That he was the James-5Britton, son of William-4 and Lydia (Leonard) Britton, and grandson ofWilliam and [6] Mary -3 (Pendleton) Britton, or Bretton, seems evidentfrom the facts that on the 3rd of June 1733, he, "James Brettan ofBristol [County], Mass.," was given a deed by Caleb-3 Pendleton to allthe latter's rights in the estate of his grandfather, Brian Pendleton, and of his father, James Pendleton (Rockingham Co., NH Deeds, xx, 228),and that in the settlement of his own estate, of which his widow wasappointed administratrix, 19th October, 1736, Caleb "Pendleton" was paid24 pounds, William "Brittain" 12 pounds, and Ebenezer "Brittain" 7 pounds13 shillings. (Bristol Co., Mass., Probate Rec., x, 172). William andEbenezer Britton, as shown in our account of [6] Mary-3 (Pendleton)Britton-Cross-Morey, were sons of William-4 and Lydia (Leonard) Britton, and as far as the records show no brittons were living in Dighton orTaunton at this period except the descendants of [6] Mary-3.
The will of Hannah-4 (Pendleton) Britton, dated at Westerly, RI,25th July, 1751, probated 26th August, 1751 (C.& P. Rec. iii, 270), gave8 pounds 8s, to aunt Anna Jones, rest of estate to daughter Hannah; incase Hannah died without issue, estate to go to brother Edmund Pendleton, and sisters Mary, Dorothy and Rebecca. Oliver Steward was named asexecutor. The inventory amounted to 715 pounds, 19s, 10d.

24. Rebecca-4 Pendleton (Edmund-3), was born probably at Westerly,RI; her date of death is unknown. She married, 30 Aug 1741, OliverSteward (Stewart), (First Church, Stonington, rec.), born 12 Feb 1719,son of William and Sarah (Church) Steward (History of Stonington, page603). For some years after their marriage they lived at Westerly, whereOliver bought land of Joshua Rathbun on the 9th day of the 5th month,1746 (W.I.F., vii, 365). Prior to 1756 they removed to Stonington, asthey called themselves of that town in the deed they made to JonathanFoster of their Westerlyt property on the 13th of January in that year(Ibid., ix, 205)
What became of this family afterwards is unknown, as none of theirnames appear later upon the Westerly, Stonington, or New London records. It is possible that they may have removed to Voluntown, Conn., whereOliver received a tract of land by his father's will -- dated 30 Oct 1753(New London Probate rec., Book F, p. 569). The church records ofVoluntown, however, do not refer to him. We have accordingly been unableto determine wehther or not Oliver and Rebecca had other children besidesthe following three given in the Westerly records.
That they may have had other children seems not unlikely, and Mr.Edwin Vincent of New York City states he has somewhere come across arecord which indicates Oliver and Rebecca had additional children,Oliver, Jr., and Dorothy.
NOTE -- A possible clue to this family may be given in the US Censusof 1790, in which the names of Oliver and Daniel Steward appear asresidents of Cornwall, Conn., the latter, however, evidently being aminor. The Litchfield District Probate Records do not refer to them.

As noreference in this Daniel Pendleton is made in the settlement of hisfather's estate he evidently died prior to 1750 without leaving a family.

Notes:
65 Edmund-5, 3rd., b. 8 Jun, 1738. He was undoubtedly the EdmundPendleton of Stratford, Conn., who served as a private in Capt. IsaiahBaldwin's mounted company, Col. Andrew Burr's regiment, from Aug. 7th toAug. 23rd, 1757, at the time of the alarm for the reelief of Fort WilliamHenry and "adjacent vicinity." (Conn. Hist. Soc. Collections, Vol. ix, p.200; French & Indian War Rolls). While the record does not refer to himas Edmund, Jr., yet his father was nearly sixty years of age at this timeand would not have been likely to have undertaken such an expedition.
It is evident that Edmund-5 died unmarried, as the Porbate Recordsat Fairfield, Conn. (1764-1767, p. 137), show that on the 25th of Sept.1765, William Pendleton of Stratford was appointed administrator on theestate of Edmund Pembleton, late of Stratford, deceased, and gave bond. The accounting was not filed until 7th of Mar, 1792, when theadministrator submitted his statement showing that the estate in 1765amounted to 112.7.0 pounds, and in 1766 expenses to said estate were71.19.0 pounds. The balance was divided equally among the heirs, Solomon,Daniel, David, and William Pendleton, -- "D." Pendleton signing asexecutor to Solomon Pendleton, deceased, -- who certified over theirsignatures "that said Pendleton estate is settled as per this Acct.Current" (Ibid., 1787-1792, p. 595.)

68. David, b. 20 Feby., 1747; d. at Weston, Conn., 11 Feby., 1826.David Pendleton settled at Weston when a young man and lived there therest of his life except for the period during which he served in theRevolutionary Army. He was a private in Capt. Wheeler's Co., Col.Whiting's Regt. of Conn. Militia, which marched 5th Oct. 1777, tore-enforce Gen. Putnam on the Hudson. This regiment was at Peckskillduring October 1777. On the 1st of April 1778, David Pendleton enlistedfor the war (in the room of David Jackson), in Capt. Smith's Col., 8thRegt. Conn. Line. This regiment formed part of the Continental Army underWashington and saw much hard service. It would sem that David wasafterwards transferred in the 2nd Regt. Conn. Line, as his name appearson the size-rolls of Capt. Chapman's Co., that regiment, 1st Feby., 1783("Conn. in the Rebolution"). From the publication entitled "AmericanState Papers, Claims, Class 9," it appears that "David Pendleton ofConnecticut, a Private of the 2d regiment, enlisted April 1, 1778, forthe War, was wounded by a musket ball in his thigh and pensioned from May2, 1792."
David Pendleton is well remembered by his grand-nephew, EdmundPendleton, of New Haven, Conn., who as a boy often visited the oldRevolutionary. Mr. Pendleton states that David was wounded at the battlenear Ridgefield, Conn. (26th April, 1777), and that he always maintaineda great interest in all matters relating to the War of Independence, collecting quite a library bearing upon that subject.
David-5 never married and that he was a confirmed bachelor isimplied in the will of his brother, Solomon Pendleton (1786), whichrefers to him as ". . . My brother David being a single man and from hisdisposition not likely to be otherwise . . ." David's own will, dated 6thJune, 1820, filled 14th Feby., 1826 is of much value as it mentions thebrother, James, whose name does not elsewhere appear of record.

69. Solomon, b. 15 Feby., 1751; d. in New York City, 1787,unmarried. Solomon Pendleton lived at Derby, Conn., for a short time, ashe sold his land there near the Meeting House Hill to his brother,Daniel, then of Waterbury, on the 12th Dec., 1774 (Derby Land Records, x.55). He removed to Schenectady, NY, shortly afterwards, as upon theoutbreak of the Rebolutionary War he was commissioned, 20th Oct. 1775, as2nd Lieut. of the 2nd Co., 2nd Albany County Regt. Schenectady District(NY Calendar of Hist. Mss.). Prior to this he had been an enlisted man inthe 1st Regt. Albany Co., Militia ("New York in the Revolution") On the7th of Nov., 1775, he was commissioned 2nd Lieut. in the 4th New Yorkregiment, becoming 1st Lieut. in June 1776, and 1st Lieut. of the 7thCo., 5th NY Regt., 21st Nov. 1776 (Ibid).
Upon the reorganization of the state soldiery in 1777, Col. Cortlandin a letter to the Commissioner of Arrangement, dated 25th Feby., 1777,recommeded Solomon Pendleton for a commission as follows: "Give me lieveSr to recommend to your Notice Liut Solomon Pendleton who served in Col.Wynkoop's Regt. last year as there is no Vacancy for a first Lieut. in myRegt. he may perhaps be placed in some other." (NY Cal. of Hist. Mss.).He was accordingly commissioned 1st Lieut. of the 7th Col. 5th Battalion,{Regt.} New York Continentals in 1777, ranking as the ninth 1st Lieut. infive regiments raised in New YHork. In 1776 he had ranked as third 1stLieut. in the 4th Regt. (Ibid.)
In Oct 1777, the 5th New York was stationed at Fort Montgomery, andwas captured by the British in the disaster that befell the Americanforces there on the sixth of that month. Lieut. Pendleton remained aprisoner of war for over three years, part of which time he spent in theinfamous prisons of New York City. In Vol. 7 of the Penn. Magazine it isstated that Solomon Pendleton was among those on parole at New Utrecht in1778. His name was still borne upon the roster of his regiment in May1779, where it appears marked "Supernumery" ("NY in the Rev.). Lieut.Pendleton was not released from captivity until the 8th of Feby. 1781,when Abraham Skinner, Commissary-General of Prisoners, effected hisexchange (Saffell's "Records of the Revolutionary War." p. 322.).
Solomon did not return to the army. Immediately upon his release hewent to Philadelphia, Penn., where, as stated in Westcott's "Names ofPersons who took the oath of allegiance to the state of Penn. between theyears 1777 and 1789," "Solomon Pendleton belonging to the the state ofNew York, with a pass from Justice Van Tassel of Winchester, New Yorkstate," took the oath on the 20th of Feby. 1781. Not long afterwards hewent to Georgia, where, according to his grand-nephew, Edmund Pendleton,of New Haven, Conn., he became a surveyor of Government lands andreceived large grants for his services. At any rate, Solomon becamepossessed of considerable property in Chatham and Effingham Counties, that state, during the next few years. These tracts he bequeathed to hisfriends and brothers at the time of his death in New York City early in1787. His will, dated 23rd Dec. 1786, filed 3rd Feby., 1787, shows thathis parents were still alive and so establishes the identities of theEdmund Pendleton who died in 1765 and the other one who died in 1789.
An echo of Solomon Pendleton's war experience is found in the veryfirst bequest in this will, which reads; "And whereas I stand indebted toWillimpee Neepsa young woman in the State of New York for which she hasmy note of hand for forty pounds this currency given about four yearsago, this money I had of her when I was a prisoner on Long Island, wherefore my will is that she be paid sixty pounds sterling (money ofGeorgia) in compensation for her kindness when I was a prisoner and inwant of maney."
