BRIAN PENDLETON AND HIS DESCENDANTS, 1599-1910, Compiled by Everett HallPendleton, Privatley Printed MCMX, found in the DAR Library, Washington,DC. Page 69.
31. Elizabeth-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was baptized 25 Jun, 1699(First Ch. Stonington, Conn.) She married Jonathan Brown. In thesettlement of Caleb-3 Pendleton's estate, Jonathan Brown gave theexecutor, Benoni Smith, a receipt for his wife, Elizabeth Brown, who wasnamed in Caleb's will as "my daughter, Elizabeth Brown" (Westerly C & Prec., iii, 330). This Jonathan Brown was undoubtedly Elizabeth's firstcousin, Jonathan-4, born 12 July 1694, son of Eleazer (11) and Ann-3)Pendleton) Brown, as is indicated by the names of their children and bythe fact that they lived upon the land inherited by Ann-3 from herfather, James-2 Pendleton.
No list of the children of Janathan and Elizabeth -4 (Pendleton)Brown appears upon the vital records of Westerly, but the land andprobate records of the town give us four of their names as follows:
On the 14th of June 1756, Jonathan Brown and Elizabeth, his wife, conveyed to William "Brumley" [Bromley] land in Westerly (W.L.E., ix,218). The index to this record reads, "William Brumbley from his fatherBrown." William Bromley had married Elizabeth Brown, 9 November 1743. Theland records show further that Jonathan Brown and his wife, Elizabeth, made deeds of gift to their sons, Eleazer and Ebenezer, on the 23th June,1714, and the 3rd January, 1764, respectively (Ibid., v.324 and x,7).They also deeded five acres to their son, "Bryan" adjoining WilliamBromley's land, 3rd January, 1764 (Ibid., x, 5), and sold land to WilliamWilliam Vincent, 14th June 1756 (Ibid., x, 218). On the same day "Bryan"Brown and Mehitalde, his wife, deeded land to William Vincent.
On the 27th March, 1769, "Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, wife of JonathanBrown, represented that her husband had sold his farm and is about tomove into some distant land and one third the money said land sold forwas paid to Benjamin Wilbur by her Request for her support, and she nothaving security for same requests that town council that they wouldreceive the money from Wilbur for her use and support in her old age." (C& P. Rec., iv, 123).
Now on the 25th December 1769, it was voted by the Town Council topay the Town Treasurer 1 pound 9 1/4d. for "Briant" Brown's taxes out ofthe money received from Benjamin Wilbur and belonging to Mrs. ElizabethBrown (Ibid., iv, 136). Furthermore, on the 15th July, 1762, EbenezerBrown declared "that in the year 1756 he heard his brother Eleazer saythat if he never came back he gave his son Jesse Brown to his brotherBryant Brown to do by as his own son & further saith that his saidbrother died soon after." Elizabeth Brown also declared she her her sonEleazer make this statement a little before his death (C & P Rec., iv,13).
Besides these four children Jonathan and Elizabeth were undoubtedlythe parents of that Jonathan Brown, entry of whose marriage upon therecords of the Second Church of Stonington (now North Stonington) refersto him as "of Westerly". The contemporaneous Jonathan Brown, Jr., ofStonington, son of Jonathan and Hannah (Richardson) Brown, was only tenyears old at this time."
An item on page 28 of Book III, Westerly "Town Meetings," alsoindicated that another child should be included in this family, as itstates that "Jonathan Hankes and Hannah Brown, daughter to Jonathan Brownof Westerly," were married in 1752.
BROWN GENEALOGY, Vol II, Boston, The Everett Press Co., 1915, by CyrusHenry Brown, page 217.
They lived upon land inherited by Ann Pendleton from her father,James. No list of children of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Pendleton) Brownappears upon the vital records of Westerly, but the land and probaterecords of the town give us four of their names. From the foregoingrecords we may set down the issue of Jonathan and Elizabeth Brown inabout the following order.

27. James-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was born about 1689, probably atWesterly, RI, and died there 9 June 1753. James Pendleton was baptizedwith his father on the 23rd Jul 1693, in the First Church at Stonington,Conn. He seems to have made his home at Westerly all his life, where heengaged in farming. On the 24th of Dec 1727, he bought of his cousin,Sarah-4 Walker, for 10s, all her rights that she had in a certain tractof land "That was given to my Honrd. Grandfather Capt. James Pendletondeceased, by reason of his services in ye Indian War formerly, which landis in ye township of Voluntown, Conn." (W.L.E.)
On the 19th of November 1731, James-4 bought of Richard Lanphere,"Eldest son and heir to Mr. George Lanphere, late of Westerly, dec.,"part of George Lanphere's homestead farm for 100 pounds (Ibid., v, 347);18th March 1743/3, James and his father Caleb, gave deed in James' son,Thomas Pendelton, of land in Westerly (Ibid., iv, 44). On the 28 January,1744/5, James Pendleton was given a certificate of residence in theselectmen of Voluntown, Conn. (Westerly C. & P. rec., ii, 400), but we donot know whether he ever went there or not.
James-4 Pendleton married (1), at Westerly, RI, 12th Jan 1709/10,Elizabeth Lanphere (T.R.) daughter of George Lanphere, ; Pendleton signedan agreement with the other heirs of Lanphere, 25 April 1727 (C.& P.rec., 1719-1731, p. 136). He married (2), at Westerly 6th January,1717/18, Elizabeth Brown, daughter of Thomas, Jr. (T.R.) and Hannah(Collins) Brown. She was born at Stonington, Conn., 9th May 1694. On the23rd March, 1735, she owned covenant to the Stonington Church. Shesurvived her husband many years and in her old age the Town Council ofWesterly made provision for her support from 1772 to 1776, during part ofwhich time her son Samuel was paid for her maintenance.
James Pendleton's will confirms the following list of his children, which appears in the Westerly records.

28. Sarah-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was baptized 23 July 1693, atStonington, Conn.; we have no record of her death. She married SethLanphere, son of George Lanphere. Inthis will her father referred to her as "Being Weak and Low."

She probably died young as she is not mentioned in her father'swill, and in the will of her grandfather, James-2 Pendleton. her sister,Elixabeth, is named as Caleb's second daughter, which could not have beenso considered if Hannah were living and the children were baptized in theorder of their birth as is presumable.

30. Caleb-4 Pendleton, Jr. (Caleb-3), was baptized 6 June, 1697, atStonington, Conn. (First Ch. Rec.), and died in 1740, at Colchester,Conn. He was living at Westerly, RI, as late as the 9th of Jan. 1736/7,when he witnessed the will of James Babcock of that town. On the 11th ofMarch following, he bought from William and Hannah Douglas, and John andElizabeth Douglass, a hundred acre farm in Colchester, Conn., for whichhe paid 800 pounds (Colchester Land Records, v,1). He removed toColchester shortly afterwards, and the records of that town show he wasadmitted a freeman there, 1 April, 1740. His death occured not longafterwards, as his will, dated 15 May 1740, was probated 10 June 1740.
Caleb-4, Jr., was evidently in prosperous circumstances for thosedays, as the inventory of his estate amounted to over 1600 pounds; itincluded among other items; farm, 1000 pounds; three Indian boy servants, all at 55 pounds; gun and sword, and notes due from Ichabod Randall,Benoni Smith, James Tilkey, Daniel Tennant and Peter Bulkeley. The Indianboy servants of Caleb's may have been the progenitors of the Indiansbearing the name of Pendleton who have turned up in later records.
Caleb-4 Pendleton, Jr., married at Westerly, RI, 25 October 1716,Mary Randall, daughter of John and Abigail Randall; she was born atStonington, 16 December 1798. Less that a year after Caleb's death, shemarried at Bozrah, Conn., 26 Febrary, 1744, Stephen Stark (Fifth Book,"Early Conn. Marriages.")
On the 5th of May, 1741, William Treadway of Colchester, attorney to Stephen Stark, "In right of his wife, Mary Stark, who was thewidow of Caleb Pendleton of Colchester, dec., " moved the Probate Courtat Hartford that her thirds or dowry of the real estate of the saiddeceased be set out to her (Hartford Probate Records, xiii, 88).
Caleb-4 Pendleton's first four children were born at Westerly, RI,and are recorded there on p. 112, Vo. I of Town Meetings, etc. The twoyoungest are named in Caleb's will and perhaps were born at Colchester,Conn.

32. Brian-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was baptized 15 Jun 1701, at theFirst Church, Stonington, Conn. We have no record of his death and fewfacts about him appear upon the Westerly records. He lived there and atStonington until about 1750, when he removed to Dutchess Co., NY, thusbecoming the first Pendleton to settle west of Connecticut.
On the 18th of October, 1727, he convayed to James Pendleton threeacres of land in Westerly, "Situated on the northwest corner of land Inow live on" (WlL.E., v, 211), and on 6th April 1730, he sold land to hisbrother Caleb (Ibid., v, 182).
Brian-4 Pendleton was admitted fireeman at Westerly, RI, 4 May 1731.On the 29th February 1747/8, he gave Benoni Smith receipt for legacy lefthim by his father, Caleb-3 Pendleton. This receipt was witnessed by JohnPendleton (Westerly C & P. Rec, iii, 330).
According to the schedule of Capt. James-2 Pendleton's will Brian-4was to receive certain lands at Watch Hill if his brother Caleb-4, Jr.,died before their father, Caleb-3. As this event cames to pass, Brian-4fell heir to this property which he disposed of by an interesting deeddated 17 Feb 1752 (WLE, vii, 388), of which the following is an abstract:
"I, Brian Pendleton, Late of Westerly . . . RI . . . But now ofBatoman's Precinet, Dutchess County . . . NY, yoeman . . . for . . . 60pounds paid by Benajah Pendleton of Stonington . . . No record of Brian-4 Pendleton married at Stonington, Conn., 11March 1725, Anna Wilcox (First Ch. Rec.). She was probably the daughterof William and Dorothy (Palmer) Wilcox, born at Stonington, 14 June 1700,as is indicated by deed of gift given by William Wilcox of Stonington, tohis grandson, John Pendleton of Colchester, on the 2nd December, 1754(Stonington Deeds).

36. Ruth-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was born probably at Westerly, RI,and died there in 1787. She married (1) Dec 1726, at Westerly, RI, BenoniSmith; (2) Benjamin Wilbur.
Ruth's second marriage is not upon recard, but her second husbandwas Benjamin Wilbur, who had also been married before. His will, dated 19Mar 1772 (Westerly C & P Rec., iv, 177), give to "wife, Ruth, the use andimprovement of one third part of the money that the land sold for thather former husband, Benoni Smith Esq. died seized of." On the 2d April1772, she gave receipt to Joseph Wilbur, executor to Benjamin Wilbur for27 pounds 12s, 1d," in full of what was given me by my former husaban,Benoni Smith, and also given to me by my late husband Benjamin Wilbur, dec." (Ibid., p. 183).
That Ruth had some difficulty with her step-children in thesettlement of this estate is evident from the following: "At a meeting ofBenjamin Wilbur, being cited to appear before the Council to answer thecomplaint of Joseph Wilbur executor to Benjamin Wiolbur [that she hadconcealed some of the personal property of the dec.] appeared and madeoath that she had presented all the personal estate of said deceased tosaid Executor. . . in order that said Executor might make an Inventory ofsame" (Ibid., p. 203).
Ruth probably died early in 1787, as on the 19th of March in thatyear inventory of estate of widow Ruth Wilbur was taken by Joshua andNathan Pendleton.

THE BABCOCK GENEALOGY, by Stephen Babcock, page 60.
Benjamin-6 Babcock, son of Colonel Nathan Babcock and Deborah)Stafford) Babcock, was born at Westerly, RI. He married Desire Billingsof Stonington, Connecticut, Feb. 4, 1779. In 1801 they emigrated toPennsylvania. They settled at or near Bridgewater, Susquahanna County,Pennsylvania, for it was here that one of their sons, Benjamin (2nd)resided. Susquehanna County, Penn., which was then a part of LuzerneCounty, was claimed by Connecticut for many years. References toLegistation affecting the "Connecticut claimants" are found in thelegislative manuals of the Pennsylvania legislature during years between1780 and 1810.
Inasmuch as Benjamin Babcock (1st) married Desire Billings ofStonington, Conn., there seems a possibility that he became a resident ofConnecticut following his marriage. If this is true then it seemscreditable that he may have been given a grant of this land by thatstate. In any event it is known that he emigrated to Pennsylvania. Hisson, Benjamin Babcock (2nd) resided at Bridgewater, Susquahanna County,Penn. until 1818. During that year he removed to what is now known asBabcock Hill, near the village of Windham, Penn. (Bradford County). Therecords of his other children have not been obtained to date of thiswriting.
Benjamin Babcock, Sr., served as a private in Captain SquireMillard's company of Colonel Waterman's regiment from Jan. 9, 1777 toFeb. 8, 1777; later served in the Pawtuxet Rangers. His father, ColonelNathan Babcock, was commander of the Kings County regiment of militia in1761 and probably commanded a sort of home guard during the Revolution,as the records show that artillery was stateioned on his land by order ofthe colonial officials.
Records show that Benjamin Babcock, Sr. purchased land in ForestLake (Bridgewater) Township in Susquehanna County, Penn. in 1810 fromRobert H. Rose, et al. And that Benjamin Babcock, Jr. purchased land inWindham Township (Bradford County, Penn.) in 1828 from Robert H. Rose; in1841 and 1847 from Charles S. In 1801, Benjamin Babcock came, and was the original settler of whathas since been known as "the Brock farm". In the spring of 1832, whileattending to his cattle, he was injured in the head by one of them, anddied from the effects. He had been a Revolationary soldier, and waseighty-two years old.
Page 378.
Not far from this time Frederick Brock, a German, located at"Brockville," five miles from Montrose, on the farm cleared by BenjaminBabcock.
From an e-mail from Gordon Clark at clark626@epix.net
Benjamin Babcock has no stone at all and we have found a rundown, vandalized, neglected former Cemetery on the property, but only thestones of several of the Brock Family are evident. The Brock familypurchased the Babcock property after the demise of Benjamin Babcock.
This cemetery and the Babcock property used to be on a road that ranthrough that area, but the road was abandoned by the township about1960-65 and you would not know that there ever was a road there.
My plan is to try to get another active cemetery in the area toplace the stone as a memorial site, since his remains are not identifedand the present site is unmaintainable, being approximantly a mile or sofrom the nearest road.
Death date from Val Van Zee at VaVZ@aol.com
After reading what you have on your web page about Benjamin I can addnothing except his date of death 6 Mar 1832, my records say atBridgewater. We appear to have the same source for the other data. I donot have a date of death for his wife, Desire, but it is said that shealso died at Bridgewater.
