Edna L. Mattern, 95, of 375 Route 2, Preston, died Saturday, July17, 1993, at the home of her son, James Mattern, in Preston.
She was the widow of George J. Mattern.
Born in North Stonington, April 6, 1898, she was the daughter of thelate Dwight W. and Frances (Johnson) Main.
She was an avid hortiulturis and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles.
In addition to her son James, Mr. Mattern's survivors include threeother sons, George, Edward and Theodore Mattern, all of Preston, fourdaughters, Shirley Pandora of Ledyrd, Mildred Harris of Bolton, Conn.,Marjorie Dayton of Glastonbury and Freida Place-Herreshoff of Bristol,R.I.; 38 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and a niece, DorothyFishkin of Miami, Fla.
She was predeceassed by two daughters, Emma Whipple-Norcross andHelen Washburn.

OLD MYSTIC - Morris Timothy Main, 82, lifelong resident of the OldMystic/Ledyard areas died Monday at Westerly Hospital in Westerly, R.I.
He was born May 16, 1905 in Ledyard, son of the late Timothy andMary (Rathbun) Main.
Mr. Main was the husband of Lucy E. (Burtch) Main. They were marriedin Ledyard in October 1929.
Before his retirement in 1970, he was employed as the custodian atNoank Baptist Church in Noank for six years. He was previously employedas a truck driver for the former Lathrop Engine Co., of Mystic for over21 years. He also formerly worked as a trucking forman for the A.I. SavinConstruction Company.
Mr. Main was a member of several organizations including the GrotonSportsman's Club, the Mystic Rod and Gun Club, the Alpine Club, theLantern Improvement Association and the former Polish American Club ofMystic.
Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, Richard E. Main, Sr.of Moosup and Timothy O. Main of North Stonington; a daughter Ruth Vitariof Essex; three sisters, Lizzie Hauschild of Groton, Edna Littlefield andFlora Avery, both of Stonington; seven grandchildren; and several niecesand nephews.

Mr. Main was retired from Electric Boat, where he was employed as amachinist. He was also a farmer, and a former member of the NationalGuard.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Rev. Richard G.Main of Dresden, Maine; four daughters, Mary Joyce Munsell of Raliegh,N.C., Dora Reece of Santa Susana, Calif., Carolyn Maslin of Huntington,Ind. and Emily D. He married the former Florence Wheeler April 3, 1929, in NorwichTown. She died in December 1062.
He was an assistant herdsman in the dairy division of the
Auer Farm for many years. He ws later employed at the Connecticut ValleyhHospital for over 10 years before retiring this year.
He was a member of the Connecticut State Employes Association andCharter 400 of that organization.
He was a former member of the First Congregational Church of NorwichTown.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Cecil Santana ofPhiladelphia, Pa., Mrs. Evelyn Blair of Portland and Mrs. MarianoBermudez of Middletown; two brothers Charles Main of Vermont and HaroldMain of New Hampshire, five sisters, Mrs. Oliver Yound of South Windham,Mrs. William Fish of Gilman, Mrs. Angelo Perrona of Fitchville, Mrs.Chester Haughn of Somers and Mrs. Richard Elton of Fitchville; eightgrandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesdayh at Gagers Funeral Home on 85Sachem St., Norwich. The Rev. Robedrt Fell, pastor of UnitedCongregational Church in Durham, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Ledyard Center Cemetery.

Besides her husband, survivors include two sons, Robert ofChattanooga, Tenn. and Raymond Maynard of Gales Ferry; a daughter,Cynthia Payne of Norwich; a brother, Raymond Main and a sister, EthelBabcock, both of Gales Ferry and five grandchildren.

A native of Ledyard, he was born Jan. 12, 1919, the son of JosephPlamer and Annis Main Williams.
Mr. Williams received his early education in the Ledyard schoolsystem and was a 1938 graduate of Robert E. Fitch Sr. High School inGroton.
Before his retirement in 1977, he had been employed at Electric Boatas an outside driller.
He was an avid outdoorsman and a longtime member of the NationalRifle Association. He also enjoyed raising pine trees for Christmas.
He was married to the former Vivian Stanton Avery on March 24, 1943,in Stonington.

She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Occum and a member ofthe Rosary Society, a member of the Deocesan Council of CatholicWomen,and pst president of the American Legion Auxiliary 1939-40 of theRobert O. Fletcher Post #4.
On June 7, 1920, she was married in St. Patrick rectory to Fred D.Wood who died June 18, 1962.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Lester (Irene) Gifford ofLisbon, and Mrs. Ronald (Doris) Stephens of South Windham; sevengrandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a son,Lt. Eugene S. Krause was killed in Guam in 1964 while serving with theU.S. Navy.

MILDRED MINER - October 17, 1987
Mildred (Pierce) Avery Miner, 78, of 18 Stanton Ave., Norwichformerly of Ledyard, died Saturday at her home. She was the widow of Donald Avery and Leon Miner, and the sister of Clara Kenyon of Westerly.
Born in Ledyard, Sept. 4, 1909, she was the daughter of the lateChester and Mary Stanton Main Pierce.
Mrs. Miner was employed in the housekeeping department of theConvalescent Center of Norwich, and was formerly employed as a bus driverwith the Seaside Regional Center in Waterford and the Town of Ledyard Department of Education. She had also worked as a cook at the Dew DropInn Restaurant in North Stonington.
She was a member of the Ledyard Garange, the New London CountyPomona Grange and the Ledyard Congregational Church.
In addition to her sister in Westerly, survivors include five sons.Warren Avery of Ledyard, Lawrence A. Avery of Norwich, Alvin Avery of Taftville, and Donald Avery and Charles Avery, both of New Hampshire;another niece, May Roberts of Sterling, Conn.; nine grandchilden and twenty great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted in Avery-Stoddard Cemetery,Ledyard, Tuesday at 11 a.m. Visiting hours at the Church & Allen-DinotoFuneral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic, Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
