    1827 Census for Nova Scotia, he was living in Wilmot and was listed as a Baptist with a family of 5 males and 6 females for a total of 11.

    1838 Census for the Township of Wilmot he was listed as a farmer with Catherine and a family of 2 males under 6; 1 male under 14; 2 females under 14; 1 male over 14 and 2 females over 14 for a total of 10.

    1851 Census for Aylesford he was listed a Baptist with a family of 2 males between 10 and 20; 1 male and 1 female between 20 and 30; 1 male and 1 female over 50. In the 1861 Census for Aylesford South he was listed with a family of 2 males and 2 females for a total of 4. This included 1 male over 3 and under 4, 1 single female over 20 and under 30, 1 female over 60 and under 70, and 1 male over 70.

    Note: John Gates, aged 74, died leaving a widow and 11 children. [Research of Lucy Traves]
