Charles Wesley Seelye, son of Lyman Seelye and Martha Griswold
was born April 24, 1840 Westmoreland, Oneida Co. NY.

On Jan. 21,1862he enlisted with Co. B of the 19th Wisconsin Infantry which
came into light ofthe Civil War. The war came to an end on Palm Sunday -
April 9, 1865. On April 14th President Lincoln was shot while watching a
play at Ford theater by John Wilkes Booth and died the next morning. On
April 20, 1865, he married SarahFrances Parsons, born 13-April-1846
Portsmouth, Norfolk Co, VA, where they were married by Army Chaplin
    Vincent Palem.

Since his release from service hetaught grammar schools in Centralia and
Springfield, IL. (I have found no information that will support the idea
he was a school teacher in the Illinois State School System Daniel Seelye)

To this union were: Fred Hundley; George Emery; Libbie V; Effington (Effie
    or Ef); Alice; Anna Mary; Martha (Minnie or Mattie) Bell; Charles Parsons;
and Harry Orrin. Land boom of 1883 encouraged the family to move to Dakota
Territory, but Blunt turned out to be only a wind swept siding of new plank
shacks where thousands of free-land seekers had beendisgorged to over
flow the one hotel and the lean to boarding houses. Many sought shelter
from driving snow in empty box cars, in tents and dugouts, or densmade by
topping stacked sacks of corn and bales of hay with planking.

Theclaim on 160 acres was finally spotted 5-1/2 miles east of Blunt. When
wheat crops failed the second year settlers turned to freighting moving
westward eventhough they had to cross the river on a pontoon bridge.

A common tale thosedays was that the haziness off along the horizon line
was dust raised by buffalo herds, but no one ever seen any buffalo. It
seems to me, so just enjoy theprick of life! like the Indians.

A person would keep there interest so thaton July 4th they could bounce
and bang into town in a wagon with the rest totake in the Indian celebration.
Town sheriffs locked the saloons and kept thekeys to prevent the usual
trouble so the celebration turned out to be largelya mild milling around
all day and a banging and bouncing home again at night affair.

To this union were Charlotte (Lolla or Lottie) Grant; Mae (May) Hundley and
Ella Frances. When his daughters needed high school education and a jobhe
sold the place in 1897 to Harry Tarbell, a son-in-law, and moved to Pierre
SD.in the little house that faces west with three windows by the front door
On Fillmore Street. A few years later he built the first house on Adams
Streetand Capitol Ave. and lived on his $50.00 a month Civil War pension.

In 1900another sad story was to lived down. When Libbie Ann Graham's
said to be kindof ornery father, pinned a tag on her lapel and put her on
a train addressedto C. W. Seelye in South Dakota. Sarah had a time
raising her as thought she never would, but finally she succeeded.
In 1902 the adoption was final.

Charles passed away, June of 1924 and Sarah the 11th of Nov.
Burial was made in the Riverside cemetery, a little south of the
    tool house, Pierre, South Dakota.

was born, April 17, 1866 at < Minnesota.

He married, Marie Denoist, born, Pine Ridge, CD. To this union
were born, George Seelye and Wanneita Seelye. Denoist isof
Indian origin. Little is know of Fred's disappearance as Marie
spent about $4000,00 trying to find him as she inherited quite a
bit of money. This alltook place in the Long Beach area of
California. It was always felt in the family of his father that
    he knew where he was.

Information passed down by Roger Xanders, grandson of Mary Anna
    (Seelye) Tarbell.
Fred can be found in the1900 Census of Hughes Co. SD. town of
Pierre. With his father and mother and family. Age as listed was
    34 years.

    Where are the children???

Could Wanneita be Juanita? - if thiscame from Roger Xanders and
    his sources that's a possibility.

Note: once Irecall hearing my mother mention that my father, at
the request of some Seelye's family members made a trip to
Cincinnati and environs in search of Fred Seelye. Rumors were
issued that he may be in the area - but his efforts (Louis)
    proved fruitless, they said.

Anna Mary Seelye, daughter of Charles Wesley and Sarah Frances (Parsons)
Seelye was born Nov. 10, 1875 in Centralia IL. I moved with the family to a
homestead in the Dakota territory in 1883 from IL.

On May 10, 1897 I was married toHarry Richards Tarbell, born Sept. 6, 1860 in
Neton Hights. Mass., at the ranch home of my parent. I really didn't like the
farm so we sold it to Boss (George) Westovers parents and moved to Blunt where
Harry and my brother operated a livery stable.

To this union were; Raymond Jackson Tarbell, born at thehome of my mother in
Pierre and, Ruth Frances was born two blocks from theO,Neil home in Pierre SD. In
those days maternal homes were common like the O'Neil's
Oh! Dean (Pat) Seelye was born before we moved out of Blunt.

Harry wasn't satisfied with the livery stable so we moved to Pierre in 1906 on
NorthYankton street where Harry took a job as clerk of courts in the court
house. He bought and sold stocks and bonds as private practice, quite
different from buying, selling and feeding of livestock on the farm, Harry
used to travel a lot while running the farm. Anyway, the more at home type of
business as I wouldsay! Harry was a member of the Pierre Lodge 27 A.F. & A.M.
    & city commissioner.

On Nov. 6, 1918, when Harry's eyes went bad from the court house work hewent
into partnership with Archie Potter in Pierre bottling works across the corner
from the Locke Hotel, Fort Street and Dak. Ave.

In 1936 our son, Raymond, moved us to California near where he lived. Harry

Martha (Minnie or Mattie) Bell Seelye, daughter of Charles and Sarah Frances
(Parsons) Seelye was born Sept. 6, 1878 in Central City IL. and moved with the
family to Blunt In Dakota territory in 1883. After graduating from Pierre High
School in the 300 block of East Capitol Ave. and back to Pierre in 1897 from
Sioux Fall where she received training to teach school in the East Pierre area
    where they lived.

About 1904 she married to Frank Craig, born April 1, 1867in Charleston
IL. where he had his named changed to jus Frank from Henry Francis. Frank
moved to Hand Co. in the Dakota territory with his parents when only a few
years old, later coming to Pierre as a freighter for the Albright Grocery
Wholesalers. At a banquet held in 1931 at the Masonic Temple the AlbrightCo.
Celebrated their 50th year of business here. Frank was introduced as thefirst
salesman. Frank and Minnie started the East Pierre grocery store but because
they charged so much they both had to go back to teaching school. Frank taught
at the Indian school, between Farm Island and East Pierre, and she wentback
to her old school. It wasn't long till Frank was mixed up in the Hughes Co.
    politics.

To this union were: Robert Blackburn Craig, Lila Jeannette (Betty) Craig,
Dorothy Luella Craig and Frances (Fran) Elizabeth Craig.

Minniepassed away Dec. 15, 1942 and Frank March 31, 1947. The final resting
place is in the fireman's lot at the Riverside Cemetery in Pierre, SD.

They lived out on Franklin street where Frank became a true friend of the Red
Squirrel asI have seen a squirrel jump from a tree in the yard to his
shoulder and look in the front pocket of his coveralls for a nut to hide.

P.S. One day when Betty was out of hi school her mother went down and told
Dr. Riggs at the PierreClinic at 111 So. Huron that he just had to give her a
    job.

The above information from Roger Zanders, Anna Mary Seelye Grandson.

Note: 10 March 1996 -Virgina May (Sunkel) Macek

I remember : Aunt Minnie" her children and vagualy I remember her husband, Frank. When I was in 5th grade I wrote and delivededa talk before the class on the American Indians, what a great choice my topicwas! Here I was told Uncle Frank Graig had
'things' he could send me for thattalk - well ! he sent bona fide Indian moccasins, photos and other items and artifact's 1 and the talk was such a success I was allowed to give it to every classroom in Jefferson Elem, School.

I also visited Craig's home and knew each of the four children - (see next page)

Robert is dead - in his youth he attened a school of mines (Schenectedy, NY) I believe) never married, Had the only head of red hair, of any one, ever in the family. They say , he was fun to bewith, as I remember. I remember, Betty and "Dor" - neither
of them married. "Dor" worked for the Red Cross and lived in Alaska for years. ( Fairbanks, I think) she died there and at the time Betty was living with her. After 'Dor" death, Betty went to live in Chicago with Fran - Fran's a widow now. She has not
written for sereral years, but I think she's still living. I don't know about Betty.

Fran married, Bob Bernero and had two sons. One of her grandsons recently graduated from Brown Univ.

On June 27, 1906, she married in theresidence of her parents in

    front, to Louis A Sunkel.
The acquaintance was made when Tully and Effie Taylor a
brother-in-law and sister came from Urbana, Ohio with a young man
to meet my sister. They got married so Louis wouldn't have to go
inthe Army. Their first home was Xenia Ohio where Louis and
Lottie worked in a Orphan home and later to Dayton in a shoe
store and retired from the fire department of Dayton. It has been
said my husband will kill me if I pluk that sink!. To this union

Thisstatement I cannot understand. Not true at all! If the US
didn't enter WWI until 1917 and my parents were married in 1906
(how could) why would Louis be avoiding going into a war we
weren't even engaged in?? (good question)
I do knowthat when America did enter WW1 my father did not
enlist because his mother was born in Germany and had relatives
there - She was disturbed over America-vs Germany. etc.

However my father told me he would have gone to war had he been
called, he never was he was 40 or so years old then.

In 1905 I left Washington High at Pierre for Sioux Falls where I got a
    certificate to teach school.

My first year of teaching was in room two of the Lincoln building in the fall
of 1907 where Raymond Tarbell, a nephew was in the fourth grade at Pierre.

All ready a teacher of the 7th and 8th grade (Jr. Hi>) in the Forsyth Public
school system I made a visit to Pierre and gained a man-friend and a marriage
license. The man-friend turned out to be Fredick M Riehm whom I married July
21, 1910 at the Methodist church at Forsyth, MT. Reverend Tho Wise read the
    sentence.

Fred was born in Allegheny, PA. July 26, 1878. At the age of 13 hewas in
school in Toledo, OH. He conducted a tin shop and followed carpenter work in
the city and state since his residence in 1910. He later became a pioneer
carpenter and sheet medalist who pioneered the Forsyth air conditioning, now
    of Billings, MT.

I attended the 1928-34 summer sessions at the Universityof Wisconsin where a
sister of mine lived on 545 south Randall Ave. in Madison, Wisconsin.

After Fred's war of being a bill collector he managed to get enough money
together so we could go to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. where Fred could
get some medical advice before it was to late in August of 1936. After the
death of Fred on the 5th day of Jan. 1937 at our home after several years
ailments I sold the small ranch one mile north of Forsyth and for many summers
I divided my time remodeling the old tin shop of Fred's into a rooming house
and traveling to and from the family relation and the Dude ranches.
One ranch was the Custer Trail operated by William McCarty five miles south of
Medora, North Dakota until about 1940 when the National Bank of Dickinson took
    it over.

Howard Eaton, who started the Custer Trail in 1882 was operating a duderanch
at Wolf, Wyo. west by northwest of Sheridan, but it was like old home.He died
    there April 5, 1922.

In the year of 1942 I became very involved around the Sheridan, Parkman.
Dayton, Ranchester and some times Buffalo area of Wyo. as a member of the dude
clan. I helped with many of the chores as I liketo ride. I really don't
believe I had a favorite horse to ride but there nameswere Boots, Rocket and
Bones and I loved them all as well as the people I metthere: Dego, Vieva,
Dorothy, Raymond and Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Jeffers. The Bearclaw, Jack Rabbit
and Elkhorn were the ranches of those days as I rode Bootsto Poss Creek for a
    picnic.

In march of 1944 Ott Hofmeister took and estimate of Fred's old tin shop to
remodel it into a rooming house. The work of remodeling was started in April
and by June it was finished. I sold the rooming house in 1953.

In June of 1944 I left by train for San Deigo to Raymond Tarbells. Ginnia and
Grant met me there the last part of June from Ohio. Bought a lot of weddding
things before Ginnia, Grant and I got back to Dayton, Ohio. Thebig day,
August 4, 1944; Ginnia had gotten her cowboy! I left Dayton Aug. 7th and it
was time for school when I got home.

In June of 1947 a reception for me was held in the home economies rooms at the
Forsyth High school by 300 Forsyth residents in consideration of 47 years
teaching in the Forsyth Public schools. I had planned when I retired that I
would live with a sister FrancesWardle in Madison, Wisconsin but she turned
out to be a real gold-digger so Ireturned to Forsyth.

I had a apartment for years with the Wakefields and others after the passing
of my husband and now I took up residency with the Eastsin an apartment.
Since my residence at the Vic East residents I find that theproperty has been
mortaged to the gills so I decided I'd better find anotherplace to live as I
might be out on the street!

In 1964 Hill Crest apartment(apartments for retried teachers only) had been

    Notes:
Frances Ella Seelye, daughter of Charles Wesley and Sarah Frances
    (Parsons)
was born Feb. 22, 1888 in Blunt, Dakota territory.

She was educated in the Pierre SD. school system and a Graduate
    of University
of Wisconsin. While thereshe ran into a married man whose wife
    was naturally
childless. They later drifted to Mt. and was run off by Aunt May
    at Forsyth
when Frances wanted to stay over night, winding up at Moore, MT.
    At Moore a
    residency was established.

She married Dr. Wardle about 1908 and to this union were:
Frances Wardle,Jack W Wardle (adopted), Harry W Wardle and
    Leona J (Ducky)
    Wardle.

Theyboth had medical ability so a few years later they
    established a medical
clinic in a red brick building at Moore, MT. Although he served
    the Buffalo
areaas a house to house doctor there ranch was located 2 miles
    East of
    Garnniell.

In march of 1927 Harry Tarbell was summoned to the severe illness
    of Dr.
Wardle. When Ruth Tarbell, a daughter, graduated from the Pierre
    high school
dad showed me how to change trains so I went up and stayed the
    summer to care
    for the kids.

Dr. Wardle was ill only a few days, due to a severe case of
    septic blood
poisoning caused by a scratch on the hand. Last Thursday the
    wound
took malignant form and Drs. Dunn and McDougal were summoned from
    Lewistown,
coming here in a speeder., Their first diagnosis revealed the
    grave danger he
was in and a serum to counter act the poison was administered.
    Sunday and
Monday an improvement was notice and hoped for his recovery were
    held. Two
Doctors were constantly in attendance until his removal to
    Lewiston, from
Moore on Monday. On Tuesday a reaction for the worse took place
    and the attending
physicians announced that he could last but a short time.

The shock was all the greater (March 22, 1922) in that up to the
    moment of his
taking to hisbed, he was unusually active among his many
    patients, working
day and nightto care for the flu sufferers and it is the verdict
    that his work,
combined with the neglect of his own condition while caring for
    others,
contributed largely to his inability to throw off the poison.
    (the scratch:
    Knife slipped while operating)

On Mar. 24, 1922 the body was followed by the Masons in parade to
    the depot,
where the many friends gathered to see the departed start onhis
    journey to
his old home (Wisconsin Bay) where he was buried on Sunday. Mrs
    Wardle and Mr.
Burreson ( a Pallbearer) returned to Moore on Tuesday.

The ranch at Garniell was sold May 22, by Mrs. Wardle.

She rented a large oldbuilding to take care of out patients.
    This particular
case was a women whomhad just gave birth to a still born and her
    first child.
She was there duringJuly when Aunt Frances asked about paying
    her husband. She
replied " I'm unable to pay". When the Doctor heard this he put
    her back in
the hospital. Aug.went by and no patients, which made a wreck of
    Aunt
Frances and my mind wasn't really thinking so I said to her (
    only a kid) "for
what it's worth this is no place for you, move back to Madison
    and give these
kids at least one-half a chance to live. Several have gone to
    Madison Univ. and had
results as I can see nothing in Lewiston" and she took me off my
    feet when
she said "we'reon our way!" By the time we ( the kids and I) had
    stopped in
Forsyth for a few days and got to Pierre by train and stayed at
our grandparents (the Seelye)and Frances, the oldest girl, had
    started to school with
Aunt Minnie, she hadbought a house and sent for us in Oct. By
    the time we got
to Madison she hada job in the operating room of the Madison
    General
Hospital. One of the luckiest girls I ever knew. It wasn't long
    till I came
home and that was the lastI seen of that ornery old rip.

Since her residency at 545 South Randall Ave. she has been with
    the staff at
Madison General and becoming surgical supervisor for thirty-two
    years. She was
    head nurse a
