  1. Jasper WINANS b. 15 Jul 1843, Union Twsp,Luzerne County,Pa; d. Apr 1880.

    Notes:
    Jasper Winans, farmer of P.O. Koonsville, was born in Union Township July 15, 1843, and is the son of Benjamin and Susan (Dodson) Winans, the former of whom was born near Baltimore, MD; and the latter in Huntington Township, where he wasmarried. Benjamin was a man much respected for his worth. In religious faithhe was a member of the P.M. Chruch and politically was a stanch Republican. Hewas born January 1801 and died in April 1880. His family consised of 8 childern all byt his wife Susan. After the death of Susan, he moved to Union Townshipwhere he resided the remainder of his life.
    Jasper was reared and educated inRoss township, moved to Union Township when 18 yoa, where he remained. He engaged in agricultural pursuite. On August 22, 1862, he mustered into the U. S. service for the term of 3 years, and participated in the following battles: Chancellorsville, Keppy's Ford, Thoroughfare Gap, Wilderness, Laurel Hill, Spottsylvanis, Petersburg and Weldon Railroad. At the latter place, he was sunstruck which ended his real active service; he was honorably discharged at the closeofthe war. In Jaunary 1868, Mr. Winans marrieded Miss Susan Scott, daughter of Garret and Sarah Scott, to which union have been born 5 children, four of who survived. Mr. Winans owned 62 acresof valuable land, whech he handled with the skillpossessed only by an expert farmer. He was much respeted in his locality and had been honored with several township offices. He and his wife were memersof the M.E. Church, and he was a member of G.A.R. and a Republican.
