1 NOTE Oliver Hazard PERRY, was aCommodore in the U.S. Navy and theCommander and hero in the victorious Battleof Lake Erie duringthe War of 1812. This simple statement does not do justicetothe extra-ordinary feat this victory represents.
PERRY had to recruit his own sailors, and not only train them, but he had to build
his own ships. He ledhis men into their first battle as adecided underdog, and went up against one of England's finestfleets, winning the battle. As a result of this
victory, England lost control of the Great Lakes. In his reportto Gen. William Henry HARRISON, he summed up the battle with thefamous statement "We have met the enemy and they are ours".Commodore PERRY died of yellow fever in Ciudad Bolivar,Venezuela on August 23, 1819. He was buried in Port au Spain,Trinidad. His remainswere later conveyed from there in a shipof war, according to a resolution of Congress and interred inIsland cemetery in Newport, RI in 1829. His wife, Elizabeth(CHAMPLIN MASON) PERRY is also buried there.

There is a large statue of Commodore PERRY located in front ofhis former home in Washington Square, in Newport, RI, and also amonument to him at Put-In-Bay,
So. Bass Island, Ohio, nearthe site of his naval victory.
