When five weeks old his mother died, and he was reared in thefamily of Hosea Whitford, and took the name of his fosterparents - Whitford.
He enlisted in 1861, as a private in the N. Y. Vols., andseveral months later was discharged on account of sickness. Here-enlisted in the 1st N. Y. Cav. and served untilthe close ofthe Civil War.
In 1899 this family lived in Vinton, Iowa.
