Notes for JOHN STRONG:
John, the immigrant ancestor of nearly all bearing the name Strong in America, was born in Taunton, England, in 1605. He moved to London and then to Plymouth. Having Puritan sympathies, he sailed for America, 20Mar., 1630, in the ship Mary and John, Capt. Squeb master, in a company of 140 persons, including Rev. John Warham, Rev. John Maverick, and Messrs. John Mason, John Gallup and Roger Clapp. They intended to land at Charlestown, Mass., but a dispute arose with Capt. Squeb, who summarily put them ashore at Nantasket (Hull), about twelve miles southeast of Boston. They selected a spot to form a settlement which they named Dorchester.
In 1636 John moved to Hingham, Mass., and on 9 Mar 1636, took the freeman's oath at Boston. He was in Taunton, Mass., then called Cohannet, 4 Dec. 1638, where he was made a freeman of Plymouth Colony & was sworn in as constable. From 1641 to 1644 he was Deputy to the General Court. In 1645, he removed to Windsor, Connecticut where he was appointed, along with Capt. John Mason, RogerLudlow, Israel Stoughton & Henry Walcott, to superintend bringing forward the settlement of Windsor, at first called Dorchester.
In 1659 he removed to Northampton, Mass., of which he was one ofthe first and most active founders as he had previously been at Dorchester, Hingham, Taunton and Windsor. He lived in Northampton for forty years and was a leading man in the affairs of the town and of the church. He was a tanner and very prosperous in his business. He owned at different times several hundred acres of land in and around Northampton.
His first wife, whom he married in England, died either on the passage or immediately after landing. In December 1630 he married (2)Abigail Ford. She was born in England in 1608, daughter of Thomas Ford and his first wife, and came to America in the same ship with Hohn. She died July 6, 1688, aged 80 years and John died Apr. 14, 1699, aged 94 years. (#1 - p. 227 & 228)

Chapter XLV STRONG There were Strongs in England, Ireland and Scotlandbut our line of the Strong Family of England was located in Shropshire. One of the men of this line married an heiress of Griffith, of the countyof Caernarvon, Wales and moved there in 1545. Richard Strong was of thisline and was born in Caernarvon in 1561. Little is known of his fatherexcept that he died before 1630. Richard Strong moved to Taunton,Somersetshire, England, where he died in 1613. He left a son, John, and adaughter, Eleanor. John Strong, son of Richard, was born in Taunton,England in 1605. Later he lived in London and Plymouth. With strongPuritan sympathies he sailed from Plymouth for Nantasket, Massachusettsin the ship Mary and John on Mar. 20, 1630. Due to a misunderstandingwith the ship Captain the passengers were put ashore about twelve milessoutheast of Boston on May 30, 1630. They found a good spot close by fora settlement and called it Dorchester. Eleanor Strong came with herbrother. After helping found and develop the town of Dorchester, JohnStrong moved to Hingham, Mass. and took the freeman's oath on Mar. 9,1636. Later he was at Taunton, Mass. and then Windsor, Conn. In 1659 hemoved to Northampton, Mass. where he was one of the first and most activefounders and became a very prosperous tanner. On Mar. 13, 1663 he wasordained the Elder John Strong in the Northampton Church. John Strong'sfirst wife is supposed to have been Eleanor dean, born in England. Sheeither died on the passage to Mass. or very soon thereafter. On Dec. 2,1630 in Dorchester John Strong married Abigail Ford. She was born on Oct.8, 1619 in Bridgeport, Dorchester, England and was the daughter of Thomasand Elizabeth Chard Ford. Thomas Ford was born in 1587 and died atHartford, Conn. on Nov. 28, 1676. He and Elizabeth Chard were married inEngland on June 19, 1616. They were both of Bridgeport, Dorchester,England and she was born about 1589 and died in Northampton, Mass. onApr. 18, 1643. She and her husband came to this country on the Mary andJohn. Another daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Chard Ford was namedHepzibah. She married another of our ancestors, Richard Lyman, so ourlineage traces to the Ford line from two different directions. See theLyman Lineage for more information regarding Hepzibah Ford. Fulton-Hayden-Warner Ancestry in Americahttp://www.familytreemaker.com/_glc_/5057/5057_291.html
The present accepted facts show that the date of arrival of John1 Strongin Dorchester. Mass., should be placed five years later than the datepreviously given, and that he probably came with his brothers in law Johnand Walter dean, in 1635. Also the death of his first wife took place inDorchester, Mass., in 1635, and his marriage to Abigail2 Ford, shortlythereafter. This reconciles all of the later authorities, andnecessitates only the change in the birth (baptism) date of Abigail2 Fordto October 8, 1619, at Bridport, Dorset, England, as recently discovered, and the recording of the marriage date of her mother 799-791-Elizabeth1Cooke (not Agnes) who married June 19, 1616, at Bridport, Dorset,England, 798-790-Thomas1 Ford.
Also the name of the first wife of John1 Strong, is now known to beMargerie dean, sister of John and Walter dean, of South Chard, Somerset,England, and Taunton, Mass., as shown by the will of their father Williamdean, dated July 20, 1634, and that of William Cogan, dated April 20,1654.
While this Ford-Strong change is adopted in the Hayden-Warner parts ofthis work, the old records on pages 85 and 86 of the Fulton part, areretained because already printed.
Attention is also called to page 141 of the Fulton part. Laterdevelopments may show that the mother of Ruth2 Eggleston was notElizabeth Bennett, but until the conflicting claims are reconciled, andproof given, the present record is retained.

THE STRONG LINE The Strongs are said to have been originally Strachans, that is, in all probability Celtic in origin. One of the family, thenresident in Shropshire, married an heiress named Griffith of Caernarvonand took up residence there in 1545. Here was born Richard Strong in1561. In 1590 he removed to Taunton, Somersetshire, where he died leavinga son John and a daughter Eleanor. John Strong was born in 1605 inTaunton. He removed to London and then to America. It is commonly saidthat he sailed from Plymouth on the ship Mary and John, March 20, 1630,arriving in Hull May 30, 1630. But a writer in the Transcript, September29, 1915, shows that he must have been in England, living with his firstwife, Margerie dean, July 22, 1634, when William dean of South Chard madehis will. The share assigned to him of aiding in the settlement ofDorchester cannot then be established and he probably took up residencein Hingham immediately upon his arrival here in 1635. He took thefreeman's oath in Boston, in March, 1636. In December, 1638, he isrecorded as an inhabitant and proprietor in Taunton, Massachusetts; fromthis place he was a deputy to the court at Plymouth in March and April,1641. He helped in the settlement of Windsor, Connecticut, and in 1659 heis found established in Northampton, where he lived for forty years, one
1 Savage gives a little information about the Blott family. The immigrantwas Robert who came to America in 1632, probably to Roxbury where hewas freeman 4 March, 1635. He was at Boston in 1644. His wife Susannadied 25 January, 1660. He died in 1665. His will, dated 27 May, 1662,with codicil of date 27 March, 1665, was proved 2 February, 1665(6) Hiseldest daughter, known from the Roxbury records as early as 1632.Blott's will makes a bequest to the children of his daughter Mary. Hisdaughter Sarah married Edward Ellis of Boston; Joanna, Daniel Lovell ofBraintree; there appear to have been two other daughters. Page 81
of the leading men in the town and church. He was a prosperous tanner andlarge landowner. He is known as Elder Strong. He died 14 April, 1699,aged ninety-four. His first wife is said to have died on the voyage toAmerica. His marriage to Abigail Ford probably occurred in 1636. Johnand Abigail (Ford) Strong had a dozen or more children; the number anddates of birth are uncertain. Elizabeth, the second daughter, is said tohave been born in 1648. She married Joseph Parsons, Esq., 17 March,1669. John Strong's sister Eleanor, who appears to have been severalyears his junior, came with him to America, and married, probably about1640, Walter dean, nephew to her brother John's first wife, Margerie; sheand her husband were probably born about 1617. The Deanes, living atSouth Chard, and the Strongs at Taunton, both in Somerset, were notdistant neighbors in England, about twenty miles. The will of Williamdean, dying in 1634 in England, was probated in London in October, 1634,is published in vol. 51, New England Historical and GenealogicalRegister. John Strong's descendants intermarried with the Dwights andother New England families; he was the progenitor of all the Strongs andof many other eminent persons of today. To conclude this account of theParsons-dean connection: Rhoda (dean) Powers was descended in two linesfrom Richard Strong, through John and through Eleanor; Elizabeth (Strong)Parsons and James dean were first cousins; Noah Parsons and John deansr., second cousins; and Thankful (Parsons) Ashley and her husband, Johndean jr., third cousins.1 Page 82

John was a tanner and spenthis life in Windsor, CT. He was a man of prominence in the affairs ofthat city. His family was not mentioned in the will of Elder John Stronghaving received, along with his brother Return Strong the Tanneries inWindsor as his inheritance portion.
