Thomas was a farmer. He joined the Michigan Volunteer Army when hewas 18, 11 Oct 1864 at Detroit for one year joining the regiment atJohnsonville, Tennessee, 11 Nov 1864 and discharged at Washington, DC 19May 1865. After he mustered out he settled in Midland Michigan where hewas a grocer and then town recorder.
