- Martha CLARK b. 8 Feb 1777; d. 8 Feb 1825, West Winfield,Herkimer Co.,New York.
Notes:
Sources: Brown Genealogy, Vols. 1 and 2; History of Leyden, Mass.;Leyden Town Records (film 866,466); History of the Connecticut Valley inMass.; Colonial Families of the USA; 1790 MA census.
The 1790 census lists Clarks in Leyden, Mass., along with Peleg Brown, father of Eleazer Brown III. Family tradition says Eleazer eloped withMartha Brown (also known as Patty), but Leyden town records belie thistradition.
Leyden Town Records (film 866,466), page 188: "An Intention ofMarriage between Eleazar (sic) of Ritchfield (sic) and Patty Clarke ofLeyden was entered in the office December 11, 1798." And, page 224,"Jannuary (sic) 9th
1799 Personally appeared before me Eleazar Brown and Polly (sic) Clarkand was joined in marriage--Asa Hebard Pastor." The Ritchfield refers toRichfield, New York.
[Asa Hebard was the Baptist minister. He died in 1830 and apparentlythe Leyden church died with him (see CT Valley History). No LeydenBaptist records are found at the FHL.]
Peleg Brown bought land 7 Dec. 1797 in what was then called Richfield,N.Y., so Eleazer must have accompanied him to New York, before, during orafter the land purchase process. And it is possible his older brother,Peleg Jr., also was involved. A "purpose of marriage" between Peleg Brownof Litchfield (sic) and Anna Clark of Leyden was entered in the LeydenTown Office 5 Oct. 1797. [Have not yet found a notice of the actualmarriage.]
It appears that Eleazer made a trip north in the dead of winter to getmarried.
CT Valley History: Most of the Leyden settlers were from Connecticutand Rhode Island, with a few from Seekonk and Rehoboth, Mass. There weremany Clarkes in Rhode Island, and Colonial Families of the USA notes anElisha Clarke of Westerly, who was living in Leyden in 1806. Elisha'swill names daughter Martha Brown, deceased, and Anna Brown, apparentlythe wife of Eleazer's brother, Peleg Brown Jr. In Leyden, theClark/Clarke name was spelled both ways.

Death info from Broome Co. Surrogate Court. Film No. 809370. Estate No.395;
Date of Letters, Aug. 11, 1884, Letters of Administration, Book 3, Page345.
Brown says Peleg M. born in 1814, which jibes closely with 1855 censusbelow,
so DAR reading of tombstone (below) may be an error.
1855 census says Peleg was 38, b. Herkimer Co., and lived in Broome Co.22
years, so presumably he left Herkimer in 1833. 1855 census says wife Lura
also was born in Herkimer.
Film 837,367, Vol. 107, DAR record for Glen Castle Cemetery, on U.S.Highway
Route 11 between Binghamton and Whitney Point in Twp. of Chenango, lists:

Nancy Ann Lee, wife of Peleg Brown, d. Nov. 22, 1848, ae 32
Peleg Brown d. April 6, 1884, ae 79 (Born 1804 or 1805? A typo by DAR?If
age at death was 69, it could well be 1814 as birth date.)

Notes:
Two reports about him: Operated a livery stable in Binghamton, N.Y.
Also, "lost at sea." Can't confirm either. 1850 census says he was afarmer.
Most family information comes from Edna Brown Foster, daughter of WilliamW.
Brown. That information with Louis B. Bate, Bountiful, Utah.
Believed married about 1844, since daughter Georgianna was born in1845.
Also, that is the year, 1855 census says, that Caroline came to BroomeCo.
Probably married in New Milford, Pa., or Chenango, Broome County, N.Y.
He is found in the 1850 New York census. Film No. 017054, Page 386,Line 28, Chenango, last on the reel. Three other Browns on the same page:Eleazer, 72, farmer; Eleazer Jr., 27, farmer; and Peleg M., 35, farmer. All born
in New York. They would be his father and two brothers. Brown Gen., Vol.II,
lists German S. Brown's marriage and says he had a daughter and threesons.
Assorted deeds recorded in Broome County Clerk's Office indicateEleazer
Brown III sold all or some of his land to sons: Hiram, Chauncey C., PelegM.,
German S., Jerome B. and Eleazer IV. The lands were located betweenChenango
and Conklin, in what is now Binghamton, Broome County, New York. Theproperties apparently were located on the north side of the SusquahannaRiver.
Details of the completed transactions, with lands being deeded back
and forth, various mortgages, etc., are found on Film 573101, Liber 40,
Page 390 (two transactions, same date Dec. 23, 1853, with German S.deeding
some land to Eleazer); Film 573104, Liber. 46, Page 485, Sept. 8, 1856,two
deals between German S. and Giles Orcutt, all Binghamton property; Film573095, Liber 27, March 27, 1845, Eleazer III to six sons; Film 573091
(second half of reel), Liber 20, Pages 331 and 332, involving Eleazer IIIand
Isaac D. Lyon and his wife Ruth.
Death info from Film 809370: Broome Co. Surrogate's Office. No. ofestate is 30; Date of Letters is May 5, 1860; Letters of Administration,Book L, Page 214? 1850 census name of German P. in error. All land dealssay German S., as well as death record.
1855 N.Y. census taken June 14 lists age as 36, b. Herkimer Co.,landowner, farmer, lived 22 years in town. Found in census afterBinghamton. Says Caroline M. had lived in town for 11 years. Since yearof her marriage? It also says she was born in Pennsylvania. (Wood FamilyIndex indicates born in New Milford.) Census says children all born inBroome Co.
Most of the information re the Brown family lineage from Edward Brownedown through German S. Brown, his brothers and sisters and some of their
children comes from Brown Genealogy, Volumes I and II.

- Jerome Bonaparte BROWN
(1.Martha1) b. Abt 1819, West Winfield,Herkimer Co.,New York; d. Baltimore,Maryland.
Notes:
Jerome had a wife named Delia C., according to land records and alsothe 1855
census. That census (Line 29, Binghamton, enumerated on June 14) listedages for
both as 29 and both born in Herkimer Co. Brown says Delia Harrington.Census
sez Jerome born in 1819. Said Jerome had lived 21 years in Binghamton andDelia
eight years. She a second wife, since oldest child is 10? Probable census
error. No occupation for Jerome but an unreadable one for his wife. 1855
census lists three kids: Hiram, 10; Herman, 8; Hamilton, 6. BrownGenealogy,
Vol. II, says the third son is Burr, born in 1850, so the ages are close.Would
a man name a son Hamilton Burr? That could give a kid a splitpersonality. Down
the line are two Thur Browns. I'll call him Hamilton Burr/Thur Brown andlet his
descendants figure it out.
B.G., Vol II, says Jerome later married, at Baltimore, a widow withtwo
daughters.

Notes:
Eleazer IV's wife was Rachel Cafferty. A Rachel M. Brown died May 18,1911.
Listed in the Broome County Surrogate Court records. Film No. 809370.
1855 Census (Film 809,005, found after Binghamton, enumerated June 1)
says he was a railroad worker. 1850 census says he was a farmer, and
1860 says he was a laborer.
Also, the 1855 census said he had lived in town (Chenango?) for 22years.
Brown, Vol.2, says born 14 Feb. 1820. Doesn't jibe with census whichmakes
birth date about 1824, but that conflicts with reported 1824 birth date
listed for sister Martha Frances.

Never married. Was still alive at time information was provided forB.G.,
Vol. II. In the 1850 census she was reported in the household of EleazerIII at
the age of 5, also in 1860 at the age of 14 (census taken just before her15th
birthday). Why she apparently living with her grandfather and stepgrandmother?
In both censuses, households of both her father and grandfather werelisted on
the same page, indicating their respective farms were close together.
One child was reported in 1850 in the household of Eleazer IV and four
in 1860. Eleazer III was listed as 72 in the 1850 census and 81 in the1860
census, and Affa listed as 60 and 75, respectively. (Little lying aboutage in
the latter?) They were rather elderly to be raising a child, especiallywhen
her parents were nearby.
1850 census film number is 017054. 1860 number is 0803724.
