[FROM THE THAYER AND BURTON ANCESTRY info]
Thomas Sayles, the son of John and Elizabeth [Olney] Sayles, was born at Providence,r.i. Feb. 9, 1699.
He married Esther Scott, dtr of Silvanus and Joanna[Jenckes] Scott Dec. 14, 1721. He settled in Smithfield, in 1731, where he accumulated quite an estate. He acted as moderator of the town for 6 years. He was also the town clerk for 9 yeasr, was 2 years a member of the town council, and 3 times a chosen deputy. He died, Nov. 9, 1754, leaving an estate with high value. His farm was, in 1894, known
as 'Durrans farm' and was situated about a mile east of Primrose railroad station, on the western slope of Sayles Hill, midway between that road and the 'white' school-house. About a 1/4 mile back of the house, up in the lots to the east, the writer found the graves of both Thomas and his wife, Esther. The burial lot was enclosed by a substantial stone-wall and near the entrance was a huge boulder. The inscriptions were still clearly discernible.
