(5) 1893, 11 Apr: Was asked to resign from the University, to take effect on 30 Jun. His chair was declared vacant on 8 Aug 1893 after his supporters asked the regents to reconsider his decision and lost. His supporters included a minority of the regents, former students of his, and the Classical Alumni, but only 21 out of 100 alumni were present for the vote, which was 14 to 7. The complaint was that, although he was competent to teach "the mechanical construction of the Greek language", he gave no instruction in literary, poetic, or dramatic value of the language, did not publish any works, and his ability to promote graduate study or stimulate research in Greek subjects was questioned.

Left granddaughter Alice Elliot Hodgkin $20,000. Rest of property divided among children Adelina, George W. Bunnell Jr., and Edwin Bunnell. Executors, daughter Adelina and son George W. (4) Had been in failing health several months before his death.
(10) 1926, 9 Mar: Estate appraised at $469,584.39. Included his property at 29th & Telegraph ($60,000), cash in First National Bank of Oakland ($12), and various bonds, primarily in office buildings, apartment houses, hotels.
(5) 1928: His sons and daughters dedicated a marble chair in the university's Greek Theater to his memory. His daughter Adelina took the initiative to erect the memorial.
