GENERATION 20 GRISWOLD LINE

My great-grandfather's given name at birth was Sylvester Griswold. Between 1850 and 1855 , his name was changed to "THOM AS" Sylvester Griswold. I think this was done because there was another male c hild born in Yates County, New York, also with the name Sylvester Griswold. Aa ron H. Griswold, Sylvester's father, must have realized this and decided to cha nge his son's name to "Thomas" Sylvester Griswold. Although I cannot find docu mentation of this, he wascalled "Thomas" for the rest of his life. I have fou nd Thomas in many federal and state census's, the only place I have found "Sylv ester" are in officialdocuments such as; the Civil War records, his obituary a nd his burial records.Many, many years ago, my grandmother, Bessie May
Gris wold-Putnam, told me that her father's name was "Thomas Sylvester
Griswold" a nd that he served in the Civil War. Once I figured out the
name change, it m ade my search for himmuch easier!
Sylvester "Thomas" Griswold married An na Rebecca Spink on October 8, 1866 in Yates County, New York. The ceremony was performed by William Comstock, Justice of the Peace. I believe that my grandm other Bessie said that her mother had fourteen children. I have found all fou rteen but I cannot tellwhat happened to four of them. Their children are: Fr edrick, David F., Frank, Willie, Ella, Oscar, Pearl, Lottie, Jennie, Frank, Nel lie, Harry, Bessie andMabel.
