  1. Frank Harrison KELLEY b. 26 Feb 1889, New Haven,Ct; d. 19 Nov 1953, Los Altos,Ca.

    Notes:
    Name Prefix: Admiral
    Graduated fron US Naval Academy at Annapolis in June, 1910. He had
    originally been with the Class of 1909, but he and many of his classmates
    got typhoid fever. Nine died, and he and a number of others losta year
    because of the length and seriousness of their illness.

    He began his naval career with 41 months of service on the USS South
    Dakota.

    As a CAPT, he took command of the USS West Point (formerly the commercial
    ship, America) in the fall of 1941. His ship evacuated the last British
    troops to leave Singapore before the Japanese took that city early in
    1942.

    He was appointedCommandant of the Naval Training Station, Farragut, ID,
    and remained there asa Commodore throughout WWII. From the fall of 1942
    until the end of the warthis facility trained some 293,000 naval
    recruits. It was second only to Great Lakes Naval Station in its size
    and contribution to the Navy war effort.

    At the end of the war Farragut Naval Station was to be closed. He worked
    veryclosely with the ID State and Federal governments to get the
    facilities transferred to the State for use as a college for returning
    veterans. As a result,Farragut College was formed in 1946. He was
    elected President of the board.The college ceased to exist in 1949.

    He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1945 and retired from the Navy in
    1946.
