!Stephen is buried with his wife and sonGeorge in the Riverside Cemetery in
Union City, MI. His grave is located in the section directly behind the vault
about a third of the way back right nextto the walking path.

!Stephen's past is kind of sketchy. All we know is that Stephen died in 1834
and was buried in Union City, MI. In 1940 Elizabeth isfound living with her
parents and children in Newton Township, OH. I don't know if she went with
Stephen to Michigan and came back to Ohio after he died or not. The history of
the City of Union City does not start until 1836 and says that the first death
in the City was that of a child of a "Young Olmsted couple" living in the city
who died from a drowning by falling into the Mill. It doesn't list the
couple's first names. It also says that the first person to be buried in the
cemetery was that of a child in about 1836. But Stephen isdefinitely there
and died in 1834. So, I don't know if they don't list him because the city
cemetery wasn't official in 1834 or what. There also is no information listing
what caused his death. He was only 31 so there must have been some sort of
accident.

Lawrence Olmsted says that Walter and Abigail were his grandparents and that
Walterwas born in 1832. Also, there is a family Bible that says that Walter
was born in 1832. Death record taken from obituary record, cemetery record,
and family records, all in my possession. The obituary record states that he
was living with his daughter, Nettie Pippitt at time of death, who was in
Branch County. However, a search of both St. Joseph county and Branch County
records didnot produce a death record. Walter came to Michigan in either
November of 1857 or 1856 from Ohio. A census record in Ohio in 1840 shows
Walter and his mother and brother all living with his grandparents.

For one year was editor of the News at MissouriValley, Iowa; of the North Side Chief at Denver, Colorado, and established theHendly (Nebraska) Rustler, but later went to Colorado and from there to San Diego, CA on account of his wife's health. At San Diego he served as a member ofthe city council for three terms. Came to San Rafael in 1898 and with his brother, Cassius Clay OLmsted, purchased the Journal; represented Marin County asa member of the Legislature in 1903 and 1905 - two terms; was United States Supervisor of Census for Northern California in 1900.
