The creek drains into the Cuyahoga River from the West, through a valley that now houses the Cleveland Zoological Park. It was previously known as Countryman's Brook (or Creek) for the man who owned some adjoining property and then later as Mill Creek before ultimately becoming known as Big Creek.

Philo Scovill built the first saw mill in Brooklyn Village on this creek.

Geologically speaking, the creek runs through what is known as Devonian Shale. Good examples of this shale can be seen at the Cleveland Metropolitan Zoo.

The following link from Cleveland Western Reserve University (CWRU) shows some early archaelogical digs along Big Creek and some of the finds they made: [1] (Click on "Devonian - Cleveland Shale")
