Fred Putnam was one of three men killed by a massive explosion at the Austin Powder Company. He was approximately 34 years old at the time of his death and left behind his wife, Lavina, and four children: Flora, Mamie, Fred Jr., and Frank.

The 1880 census shows that Lavina had remarried to Dennis Smiad or Smead and was living on Pearl Street between Forestdale Ave. and Garden Ave.

Although the 1880 census shows that the children's father was born in Maine, his entry in the 1870 census for Milton, Wisconsin shows he was born in New York.

Fred is buried in Denison Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio, along with the other two victims of the explosion.

His son, Fred Jr., spoke about the explosion in an article for the "Annals of the Early Settlers".
